DKNJ: who could forget the folks running upstairs?
I'm staring at the ticket stub...it is June 28th. Anywhooo...On the back of my stub, I used to write down the set lists. I must have liked this one..."unREAL 2nd Set!!!" I remember the Scarlet> Fire was absolutely smokin'.
had a great spot in lot picked out,and was very much enjoying the company of my friend sue from syracuse, when some lame dude set up stir fry in the spot next to us... for the next couple hours had to listen to him advertise at the top of his lungs "wok and roll, get it while its hot...contemplated killing this dude......""" nothing left to do but,SMILE
Too bad SPAC got over runned at this show by too many heads as they could not and would never again be able to play here. Unfortunate as they always ripped it here. They still own the record for attendance and is marked on the lawn still to this day. I live in Saratoga now and it bugs me when people talk about Dave Matthews selling out multiple nights there. I wish the Dead were allowed to play here two nights but it was never to be. Now they cap the attendance. So the record still stands. DMB will hold the record for most sellouts due to the cap but no one will match the rain soaked nights in Saratoga that made 83',84',85', and this last one in 88' so special. IF you don't have tapes of any of these shows I suggest you get them. SPAC rocked!
There was a bad scene in the first set when buttheads charged the ramp to the shed during Candyman. There was a scuffle with security on the ramp. Then the skies opened up during Masterpiece and chilled everybody out. The downpour stopped in time for a heartfelt Row Jimmy with everybody on the lawn soaked and huddling for warmth.
This was to be the last GD show at SPAC, unfortunately. Too many people, too much trash for the city of Saratoga to deal with. Very sad, needless to say. I was/am pretty much a hometown deadhead, never traveling the road with the boys. Whenever they rolled into SPAC, I was there. The venue is and always will be a special place to see a show. Hanging out in Saratoga State Park in the cool of the pine forests was awesome! I witnessed so many cool people and things. I will always remember the SPAC shows as the ultimate good time happening!
~Don't lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools!~
I had never been to SPAC, & I was so pumped for this show. I can not tell a lie. I thought the crowd sucked, & the show did not live up to the bands past in Saratoga.
The highlight definately was the pre drums second set. The Scarlet->Fire was the best of the summer, and the Estimated->Crazy Fingers was fantastic. I never did hear a bad Goin' Down The Road either.
I went to school in town, had graduated two years earlier and moved to Maine. My best friend and I drove out, hit the park and listened to the first set while lying on a blanket just outside gates. We watched people climbing the fence get arrested for a while and then cilmbed over ourselves when it seemed like nobody cared anymore.
I remember the size of the crowd as we left and everybody mooing as the path narrowed to cross a bridge. I remembered thinking being a cow isn't such a bad thing, especially when we weren't stampeding, just easing our little human thread from here to there.
We ran into one of our friend's brothers, a guy I'd never met before and he looked so much the same he confused the heck out of us. He offered us a floor to sleep on that night and we shuffled back to Boston the next morning.
I liked the memory because it had been so easy. It's too bad it was the last in Saratoga.
Beautiful venue, but I was bummed out by the gatecrashers and the people cheering them on. Then it rained. I didn't have really any fun that night, despite the great music. The parking lot scene that day was awesome though - That made the trip worthwhile.
