    My First Grateful Dead Show

My college pal and I drove down to the Meadowlands in New Jersey to witness the Grateful Dead and Sting. The parking lot scene was top notch, I haven't seen anything like it since. The music was tremendous and the amount of dedicated fans on display was cool to see in person.

    The Rain
The rain was an added gift considering the following years were sunny and about 100 degrees in the lot.... Anyway, we scored some nice seats in the covered mezzanine. If I remember correctly the rain stopped by this point???? Anyway, when I rate these shows I give them all a 5 if just for their nostalgia. Good friends, cold beer, tons of weed and other acceptable drugs of the time, good music, Did I mention Cold Beer? Just the best time of my life... 89-95 I caught as many shows as broke, alcoholic, twenty something could muster and then some... The only time my face stopped smiling was the dead of winter.... Thoughts of knickerbocker arena and Nassau Coliseum kept my spirits high as spring tried to cut of the clutch of winters frozen grasp on the North East. Being from Scranton Pa was like being the pivot man in a circle jerk when it came to Dead shows...120 miles from NYC or Philly not to mention a million places in between. We were never short on the number of shows we could see. The Ohio Boarder, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and RFK only added a few dollars to gas money. I still say this is the best place to live if you like live music.... Anyway, it's summer 2011 and I have 2 shows picked for my summer listening and dancing pleasure... I'm gonna try and get my 10 yo son out this year before Time separates us from our strange heros... I hope to see you all dancing in the streets...

The weather was cold and rainy. I remember thinking "this is a pretty cool jam" when they started Easy Answers in the middle of Music. That quickly changed to "why did they ruin Music with this crap?"

I fly out to NJ and stay with a gal-friend somewhere near the Meadowlands. It starts to rain so we pick up as many hikers as the little escort would hold. We get to the parking lot and park right behing the exact same model car. Realizing this can work to our benifit, we flip her car around so both hatchbacks are facing each other, lift them both up and and throw a tarp over them. We had a waterproof area that was the envy of our row. Tuens our the van down the isle from us had that familiar hissing sound comming out of it and no one wanted to get stuck in the rain. Guess what the payment was to get out of the rain. Tanks but No Tanks!! Needless to say we blew off the sting portion even if we had 6th row seats... The rain topped and we ventured forth. Not a huge highlight. The set ending Music>Answers>Music was only different but only noteworhty. I was just jacked to see Jer up close in a stadium. Been to many stadium shows but this was the closest.

I was smart enough to wear a rain poncho that night, and a good thing, cause the guy behind me was having a tough time keeping his beverages down. I unleashed a flurry of balloons on the stadium, and went to the Wharf Rat meeting during the break, to recharge my Spiritual Gratitude Batteries, and prep myself for the Drums.kbarratt

A sophomore in high school; trolling the parking lot and trying to sell jewelry my buddy's cooler older sister had made. We made no sales. I just recall a vibe I'd never before encountered. I remember the boys teased "In My Life" prior to the encore and a few other times throughout the show. Could I be crazy? I recall that buddy's cooler older sister's boyfriend had a sketch book and drew the stage from our upper deck straight-on vantage point writing the set-list atop his piece as the show went along. I recall eating nachos during the set-break. I recall virgin paranoia during set I to be quelled by a Scarlet>Fire opener in Set II. I recall a man a few rows in front of me voraciously digging Drumz like I'd never seen anybody wriggle and writhe before or since. A time I haven't nor will ever forget. The beginning of an incredibly important part of my journey. CG

This was a good time, this show. I remember all the business about the gate crashing back then too. This was probably one of my last shows. I went in for the Sting set. It was OK. I'm a drummer and wanted to see Vinnie Colaiuta. He did a fine job of course but pretty workmanlike. The first set was a jolly set. Yeah Eternity and Easy Answers slow things down a bit. The rain came. I didn't mind too much b/c I was feeling good and the Dead were making me forget about everything else. I'm listening to this show right now (really good quality) and they really did sound good (I'm only into Wang Dang Doodle yet). Even Vince sounds good. Really digging it. I love the Dead and I loved seeing them often when I was younger and when they existed. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * -enjoyin' the ride -There'll never be another Jerry

I won 2 tickets on my local radio station, WPDH, for both nights at Giants stadium. I had to sing Truckin' while gargling bong water [I only used water as I was getting ready for work] against another guy. We were both so bad it literally came down to a coin flip, he called heads, and when it came up tails, I was in!I also got a room as part of the tix package at some hotel next to the stadium that I always referred to as "the cupcake" due to the top of it looking just like a cupcake with a cherry on top. I don't really remember much about the shows, only that I had a great time at both. I also remember that when I got back to the cupcake, all the Heads headed to the bar in the lobby area. This usually being a suit and tie businessmans hotel the sea of tie dyes wasn't very welcome [I thought] and they shut down the bar before I could even order a nightcap. It was a fun weekend all around and it was free, free, free.
