In loving memory of Hank
This was the last show we would see with our friend, Hank Young. He was terminally ill and we were moving out west. He was an old Deadhead with a big ole' beard. People in the crowd would call him "Jerry". At this particular show, he was telling people sitting around us that he was there to see Sting. It still makes me laugh just thinking about it. Oh yeah, the show was good, too.
My last Dead show
It was special to me. It was with with my 18 year old daughter who had just graduated high school. Although she came to a few shows as a young child with me and may have well been conceived at a a show (afterwards of course) this one was special. My daughter made some more shows after that but that was it for me. My run started in 1969 and came to an end in 1993.
Memories of this one...
We blew off Sting the night before due to the weather and party in the lot, so we wanted to get in early for his set. His set was great! Although we didnt get 6th row for this one, we still had excellent seats at the 50 yard line. (Thanks mailorder!) I recall seeing Jerry standing behind one of the amps digging on the tunes. The Purple Haze Sting did was really cool and being a Police fan from the early days, the stuff his band played brought back memories of seeing them in the late 70s and 80s. During the break Mickey was projected on the big screens asking people not to jump over the wall onto the floor (guess this has been issue in the past) I thought this was funny untill people DID start to jump down in front of us! The Dead didnt let us down either. HC Sunshine was a nice touch being that it poured the night before. I cant remeber the last Bertha>Good Luvin Ive heard and rest of the 2nd set was a real treat too. For being my only NJ shows the East Coast folks were really cool. (Except for the loons that jumped the wall... lol)
sting -
I believe Sting did a version of 'Penny Lane.' It was a weird set and a weird choice for an opener.

Howdy,
Sting was good all the times I saw him open for the GD.
This is a really good show besides Bobby's vocal "polyp" problem, if you listen to it , you'll find Bobby having a hard time singing occasionally, but like a true pro, he gives his all; you couldn't ask for any more in a musician.
I only saw 30 shows , but I would say this one is stong in both sets. Nice balance in the first set. However, the second set I was really hoping for a good playing in the band - got it. The bertha>good lovin was a flashback to the mid 70's, and I don't think Bertha was being played that much back on this tour so that was nice - nobody expected this combo. The we get UJB, I'm thinking, aw shit, no playing since it was usually the other way around. Then pow! Playing in the Band erupts with a ferious jam off into drums. The playing in the bands from summer 93 are great, Jerry actually uses a wah wah pedal, not the mutron, I haven't heard that since the early 70's. Also, vince and jerry were doing some nice harmonic ideas on these playing's that would modulate key changes very well with phil playing some very choice inversion bass notes. Corrina out of space was nice to, but nobody expected "attics of my life" thowing stones is always pretty cool, but you can never go wrong with "not fade away" One of the best tunes the GD ever did in my opinion, they knew how to open up that bo diddley "clave" beat so well. Liberty was a decent cap for an encore, becuase that is what's all about - read the lyrics!
