    My First Show, Too!

A couple of points I didn't see mentioned...This was just a week aftwr Pigpen's passing and we were wondering pre-show if the energy would be low...Quite the opposite! And while Sons of Champlin were billed as the open, Bill Graham announced that the lead singer's father had died and instead The New Riders played! Since I was tripping nicely from a hit of blotter I copped in the parking lot, I wasn't sure for the longest time if my memories of just how great this show was actually were based in reality or chemistry but that was put to rest when I heard the board recording. It remains among my favorite among the dozens of Dead shows I ultimately saw.

The bus came by and I got on.....
My first show.Outside before the show, I got separated from my group and I was looking for them. Not paying attention, I walked right up to Bill Graham, he had a megaphone telling everyone to move back. He gave me quite a forceful shove back and called me an asshole as I recall. Tommy's father gave us a ride there, he was a NYC cop. He also picked us up and said "Where is Allan?" We said that he got a ride home from some friends. He actually spent the night in the Nassau County jail. Still riding that bus, what a privilege. Peace

This was my first show. We arrived in two luxury buses (with toilets) from SUNY New Paltz. What a zoo. Everyone was smokin' pot (in all forms) ,'shrooms, acid, etc. My life-long buddy, Richie, had hired the buses. From China>Rider to Sugar Mags. It was a great show. No reserved seating. Heard the local fuzz did some busts, but I didn't notice it. It was extremely hard to get a ticket for the Dead in NYC for the last two years, so I was really thrilled

Myself and about 40 other teenage Dead freaks from Cranford, NJ went together to that show. Mostly high school seniors, a few juniors too. Not many of us had cars, and my friend had a brilliant idea to charter a bus to the show. It was the Magic Bus in every way imaginable -- and what a fantastic show. A memorable second show for me.

This was the show where Naussau County cops broke truce with Bill Graham and busted quite alot of people inside the venue. I remember Bill coming onstage and telling the crowd to be careful, "That the person next to you may not be your brother!"

WharfRatboi We rented a school bus from Darien Ct. with about 30 of us on it. Lots of fun and elements!

I also believe that the album cover for Neil Young's Time Fades Away is a view of the stage from this show.

I was "on the bus" from Darien w/jbentzr! What we got away w/on that bus would never happen today! Any other people out there along for the trip? Everyone on that bus was underage (except maybe the driver, who's name was Jay, get it, roll a jay?). As the sign we put on the back of the bus said "Lost Rabbit, Master Cylinder & friends." Nobody got left behind... & everyone survived...What a blast! I remember Pig had just died & that during Dark Star the Mirror ball was on, but not spinning...while the whole floor at Nassau lay flat on their backs, watching the purple beams of light through the nightfall of diamonds...
