it's been said, but it's so true -- the electricity in that place as we realized what was happening, that we were really hearing Box of Rain, was incredible. So glad I went on this trip (at 16, my first road trip outside the Philly area), a great set of 3 shows in Hampton, which had many special moments over the years.
At shows I attended over the years you'd hear a rumor they were going to play something we hadn't heard in a while. This night I don't remember one person saying anything about Box of Rain. I've never since had such a moment of pure exhilaration as I did when I realized what we were hearing this, performed for the first time in 13 years. There's a video of the next night it was played, in Philly, on you tube.
I totally agree with what was said. This was an incredible moment...one that I will remember for a life time. I just remember listening to Althea and heraing Jerry flub practically every verse...guess he knew what was coming up next and figured no one would remember...lol
Your so rite Duggles . I think everyone I knew went looking for each other at the break . Just to say can you believe that............
Box of Rain says it all...first time in many years. Phil was so strong...and the crowd brought so much power! I think this is the show where I bought my priceless tie dye tapestry for $35...still haven't seen anything like it. This was the only show I ever went to with my former and now long lost friend John ...
I was reminded of this show last night, when Phil and Friends opened the show with Box of Rain at the Capitol Theater. I have not seen any Dead-related bands at all since Further in 1998 (?). I have to admit I had absolutely no interest, but a friend of mine had encouraged me to go. Anyway, this opening took me back to this show, when Box of Rain broke out. I remember this moment clearly ... I was in the hallway at the time at Hampton Coliseum, and it felt a like a rebirth of sorts. People were laughing, crying, jumping up and down, hugging each other. It was amazing and will never be anything quite like that night. Fast forward to last night, Phil dedicated the show to the memory of Gregg Allman and they played Midnight Rider. They killed it. But Box of Rain gave me goosies....
