    Branford
When Branford walked out behind Jerry for the second set, the Coliseum erupted as the biggest question during halftime was would we see Branford during the second set. Probably the most goose bumps on goose bumps I ever had at a show.

    ヱビス sweat neon blues
peppy, zesty; dripping humidity in the Yokohama small hours. bubbling with energy as Brent shrugs it off and Billy and Mickey pulse and vibrate.

By and by again the morning sun will rise
After the previous night I expected some teeth in the song selection. Jack Straw / Bertha was a great start. Ramble On Rose and Masterpiece put us in a laid back groove. Had seats on side of the stage - perfect view and sound was nice. Bobby introduced Branford. The Bird song ebbed and flowed. It was a real treat. Branford left during Promised Land. In between sets we discussed the possiblity of him returning. If he didn't the Bird Song was nice. Anyway, in between sets a young man sits next to us and lights one, the lights go off and the moseleum becomes the launching pad for one of the sweetest, satisfying Dead rides I ever took. The Eyes took me to far reaches of intergalactic Deadom. It meandered and Mr Marsalis played with beautiful precision as if he helped write the music for the song. When it ended I was hoping for a Let It Grow. Initially, I was dissapointed with Estimated. The playing of the song though showed the playfullness of the band with a new sound. WOW. Then the DarkStar. I circled the universe and soared to ecstasy. This show was one sweet ride that I have enjoyed over and over. The complete recording deserves to be mixed and released so the best possible sound is available so I can play it at the loudest my stereo will allow.

The "Eyes Of The World" that started the set was just the jumping off point. When they started "Dark Star" the place was one big hug. And here's ANOTHER show that should be put out, since it was recorded in multi-track digital goodness

Eyes of the World doesn't get better than this! Brandford Marsalis and Jerry playing note for note. Bruce Hornsby sat in for second set also.

Branford Marsalis came out at the end of the first set and played on Birdsong and Promised Land. Then reality went right out the window. From the first notes of Eyes, right through Lovelight, the second set was pure, unadulterated magic. I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Marsalis at a Mets game in 97...an incredibly nice guy who stated that he "had a LOT of fun playing at that show." By far, one of the classic Dead shows!!! No way Hornsby was there.

DKNJ: Branford definitely kicked it up several notches. Having him up there made the stage a "no slack zone"

This was not my first show, but it is the one that made me a deadhead! Got a ticket at the show and walked in during Bertha and never looked back. Branford played on the last two songs of the first set and the entire second set. There is not a bad note in the whole show, and deserves to be released as a dicks picks or something. Not just one of the best dead shows I've been to, but one of the best concerts I've ever been to as well. There is no way Hornsby was there!

I was cleaning out a desk drawer and just found this ticket stub and it brought back a bunch of great memories... Branford was amazing this night. Of all the great guest performances the Dead had, this is right up there as one of the best. Many times guests would play with the Dead and it would seem awkward and/or the Dead would adjust to play the guests style. Often it didn't work. But not in this case- in fact Branford added something to the band that made them better in many ways, especially during Eyes and Dark Star. I feel lucky to have been at this show!

I never liked going to Nassau. The coliseum is in a war zone. But they always rocked that coliseum. This night was no exception. One if my favorite second sets I have attended all time. Now Bruce could elevate the band, but no where near the level that Mr Brandord Marsalis could and did on this night. The Eyes was epic on this night, but it was because of his play with jerry. They played as if they had done so for years. And one really can't comment on the Eyes without mention Phil. He played with such a steadyness this night. He and Branford must be soul mates after that night. Phil was the designated driver this night.
