This was both my second time to see the dead and Jimi Hendrix.I remember Pig Pen introducing a song from their new album Working Man's Dead and the crowd gave a great cheer.This was an altogether great concert.the only bummer was I was with people who really could'nt get into it.But I think of this show often even now .The Dead and Hendrix together at one concert.Peace

i was fifteen years old and hitchhiked to this concert with a friend. through a fluke we got backstage (onstage behind a wall of amps) and partied with the dead's family while they played. later we stood five feet in front of the stage and watched hendrix. still the best concert experience of my life.

I was there with some friends to see Jimi Hendrix. I remember it was a hot day, it was an ugly football field, the first group (I think it was Cactus) was terrible and I was beginning to question my decision to come. Then my life literally changed forever. This scruffy looking group comes on and takes forever to tune up. About 100 to 200 people right in front begin bouncing up and down, and they appear to be.....joyful. Very weird. Slowly, as everyone who will ever read this can attest, the music began to reach out to me, infiltrate my nervous system, causing me to move and .....laugh, at least inwardly. 45 minutes on and then off.Henrix comes on and provides the perfect contrast. Dark, morose, narcissistic, no Joy here. Sadly Jimi died about 10 days later. I bought Workingman's Dead the next day, saw them 50+ times, and listen to them almost every day of my life. Still bringing me Joy. Thanks fellas.

Went to see Hendrix and Steve Miller. First band, "The Grateful Dead? Never heard of 'em". 45 minutes, and I was a Deadhead.

My first live Dead show, and it was FREE! It took place literally across the street from my best friend Bob's house. We had just finished our senior year at Temple's Tyler School of Art, but had not had our graduation ceremony yet. The day of the concert we walked over to check it out, but didn't have tickets as they were really expensive for 1970: $6.50. So, as we're trying to decide whether to spring for the tickets, who turns up but the maintainence men from Tyler School of Art to unclog the Temple Stadium toilets. Since they knew us, we ask them if they can get us in, and they hand us each a toilet plunger and they lead us in. There were about 8 groups: Hendrix, The Dead, Cactus, Steve Miller, Country Joe and the Fish, Holy Modal Rounders, etc. Steve Miller Band was great, The Dead played a 45 minute with standout versions of Casey Jones, and Turn on Your Lovelight with an ailing Pigpen. As the day went on, it turned gray and started to rain. Philly's fascist police chief at the time, Frank Rizzo, hated "hippies" and had an 11PM curfew in effect. Hendrix was about an hour late coming on stage, and we were worried that they would shut down the show before he could play. He eventually got on and played a mostly uninspired set. So, I guess I owe The Dead $6.50 plus interest?
