Best ever, tried to light up a joint, no smoking anywhere at Pauley. The Playin-Uncle Johns-Morning Dew-UJB-Playin best I ever saw them play

I wasn't even there and I consider this show to be a life alterer! Somehow it seems no one believes the next guy when he uses the word "best" to describe this show - you use it twice! It has to at least be rated among the very few finest shows in the Dead's peak period. Nice call! "From day to day, just lettin' it ride, You get so far away from how it feels inside, You can't let go, 'cause you're afraid to fall, But the day may come when you can't feel at all."

I made the mistake of getting really stoned on the way to the concert, which resulted in my friend Jim Leonard and me getting lost trying to find Westwood, where UCLA's Pauley Pavilion is located. By the time we made it there, the Dead had already been on stage for an hour. Luckily, the band, still blessed with the vigor of youth, just played on and on in those days, so I still caught the lion's share of the show.

It was so cool back then when I found out that The Dead was playing within two block where I used to live,tried to look around in the afternoon to see anything-nothing.Comes the night and coming into the House that John Wooden Built(you have to remember that this is hallowed ground for UCLA basketball) and to see this-HUGE sound system. Well I have to admit that during the second set I nodded off,but wow that thread of music that just kept going and going and going was incredible and very magical. The bus did come by and glad I got on. Cheers

I would've been a DeadHead at least a couple years earlier if someone hadn't tried to sell them to me by playing things like Johnny B Goode (Johnny Winter already did it better). It came to be, nonetheless, that in the first couple weeks/months that I was experimenting, that one evening on purple microdot I discovered that I couldn't listen to faves like Humble Pie, but instantly grooved to the Allman's Mountain Jam, and the brand new Dead Mammary bootleg that I'd fortuitously picked up that afternoon to sample. My interest was piqued.Later that month or so, I grabbed tickets, smokes, my girlfriend, her friend and her uncle, and headed to UCLA. The show was so UNLIKE the subsequent DeadHead experiences. Showtime was 8pm and we walked in from the rainy night about 8.01pm and EVERYONE was seated quietly and the band was just a few moments into Me & My Uncle. Most of the songs were new to me, but the playing was clear and very sublime and expansive. Donna was very pregnant and slowly bobbed along to tunes like Here Comes Sunshine and Row Jimmy. We agreed THAT kid was gonna be far out! Security was quiet but perpetually shining flashlights on folks to put out those smokes or stay seated. The ONLY person up dancing was a freeform dancer with a spotlight on her a few rows from the front. A long pleasant evening and concert. An original idea occurred to me afterward; that the length of the concert and beautiful slow jams and segues just may be conducive to tripping. ..And the rest, as they say, is history..

and that was all she wrote. . . Awesome "Here Comes Sunshine" (new on the radio then) and classic 1973 "Playing" jam in the second set. A four-hour life-changing experience; I was a Deadhead!

Friends and I had had about a whole row together> what a great time and still afavorite show of mine.

Yea, tcrawford, we were successful in that regard, didn't know they had a smoking rule in there lol! People were kind of shocked to see Garcia come out there clean shaven. We knew they came out of San Diego playing very well. They didn't disappoint, did they!? This was a great show to be at. Totally together and tight sound. I think this was my 5th show, the first being at the July 1972 show at the Hollywood bowl. Three numbers in this show I recall with clarity are the opening number, then "The Race is On", "Big River", and Uncle John's Band, all of them rousing numbers with amazing energy. Pretty cool stuff. Just listen to the band play Big River. Wow.

This show has been selected for release as Dave's Picks Volume 5, to be released on February 1, 2013.About time for this show to be officially released, it would have been welcome as a Dick's Pick, or a Road Trips or a Download Series release. A great compliment to the Winterland 1973 box set.

Hey, my buddy just committed to UCLA football and happened to score some tickets. What a great day and night, a long night! We were Truckin'!

It's hard (impossible) to say these 5 shows or these 10 or 20 or whatever shows are the best. Hard to say the best year ever (impossible - although, if someone said 1977 i wouldnt disagree). But...this show stands out over the hundreds of tapes i have and shows i've seen as something really special. It doesnt blow the roof off but it is so sublime and jammy jazzy trippy flowing perfection. Particularly the Playin=>Uncles=>Dew=Uncles=>Playin. I've had this tape forever and consistently go back to it. Get this show!
