The Garden was always a special place. I hadn't heard about the sound checks the night before but out on the sidewalk someone asked if I had heard about the Steven soundcheck in Greensboro. I hadn't and I remember thinkin' I would have preferred not hearing about it. I like surprises. No worries, it was still a rare event for all. I was right behind the soundboard recording with my D-5 and I remember getting quite emotional about it. One of my happiest moments - when they started the song. Not a stellar version in hindsight. In fact the Hartford version in four nights was better but it is always good when they bust something big out and my first Steven.

I vividly remember one of my buddies yelling at the top of his lungs ST STEPHEN!!! as we left the subway in Penn Station and everyone around laughing at him it was his 1st show little did we Know that a few hours later he would have have the last laugh. One of the best of the 80's
I was there and didn't even know about the breakout for years after... I was just knocked over by the 'Wang' opener (had that real low-down, sleazy NYC feel to it) and a really well-played Jack Straw.
Damn good show, and it holds up to the ages.

The first of several MSG shows.
I went to this show without a ticket. I purchased one at the MSG box office....12 ROW CENTER!!
Everyone on the floor were standing on their seats. I got so excited when I heard the first note of St Stephen, I fell backwards on to some dude recording the show. He got pissed but I was happy!!!

At one point during the Stephen, I remember grabbing onto a rail, and it was moving too, so I knew it wasn't just me. What a ride!
I remember vividly that, where I was (middle of first deck, stage right) for about 8 or 10 seconds, the crowd's joyous roar overcame the music. Incredible moment! People hugging and congratulating each other ("strangers stopping strangers..."???)
I had a 2nd gen audience tape that captured this nicely, but alas, the ravages of time.
I remember the roar of the crowd as they came out of space to the Stephen. I was in the 4th row on Garcia's side and that roar came towards the stage like a freight train. I think even the band was amazed at the outpouring of excitement coming from the building. It wasn't until years later in Hampton '89 that I heard a crowd go nuts like that. This Garden night holds up for sure though as a monumental night for anyone who was there! I love my audience tapes of this show as they are crackling with energy. IThat energy carries over to the next night as well.
I had recently moved to NY in 84, and stopped to check out the street vendors around Astor Place. Lo and behold, a vendor selling this tape! I couldn't believe the show once I put it on. A very strange tape also- definitely sound board, and it has volume fade-outs at the end of some songs!
Location
This was my first Dead show... and little did I know what a show it was... it wasn't until many years later that I realized I had witnessed history by being there for St. Stephen... either way I still enjoyed it!
