riding like a surfer riding on a tidal wave
drove from long island without a ticket. arrived in Hartford the 14th was sold out. tickets left for the 15th. purchased a ticket for the 15th with the intention of using it on the 14th. how hard could it be to change a 4 to a 5 ?? figured I needed a pencil with an eraser. that search became a small chore. wound up at the bus station. the man at the ticket counter let us borrow his. did an ok job went to the entrance of the civic center for the moment of truth. the number altering looked ok to me. made it to the person who rips the ticket and SHE says "this ticket was for tomorrow this isn't for tonight and gives me the ticket back. I go two persons over to a guy he looks at it rips it and lets me in. I don't think he looked at anything-it could have been for the circus the following week....enjoyed the show. at the time it was full of surprises. duprees,esau,1st set miracle...biggest surprise was lovelight which wasn't in the rotation yet. no encore made us yearn for more. thought about sticking round for the 15th but work was calling....

    This tour
This tour was so much fun , was still into only loving the band and music. the next year I got into things I wish never happened. Substances became as important as the shows themselves. Downfall for sure yet still had it under control till fall of 88 into 89. On this tour we had so much fun at the shows and in between each night. Was making good money and living large. Thing I liked about this night was the post rhythm devils was rather crazy.

...I don't recall it being a great show. I'd like to hear this one again.

tiger, if you get a chance to hear this one again, listen for the effects in Weir's voice at the end of throwing stones. I don't remember much else..... except, can somebody confirm; to enter the Center, you walk through a shopping mall?

I was quite hung over, but this was about the worst show I saw. Even the set list now looks awful. Thank God for Meadowlands a few nites later!

This show was very long and had many great versions of songs, High Time & China Doll. The end of the 1st set was very good too as was the end of the second. But to hear this version of Lovelight was amazing. It was only the 4th time they played it since Pig Pen and no body saw it coming. The place erupted in ecatasy and they raged on it. They blew the curfew so there was no encore. The only time I ever witnessed that. When the lights came up the place was still entralled and Mickey & Bob came out arms arpound each other the the end of the stage and waved good night to us all. We all went crazy and knew we had shared in something quite special. The Dead always enjoyed playing Hartford.

I've never heard a copy of this show, but "the setlist looks awful"??? I'd take a 1st set Miracle with a Dupree's and an Esau ANY day (never got to see EITHER Dupree's OR Esau in my 33 GD shows), let alone the 6 song pre-drums. I'm also a fan of China Doll...so.... Junior year of college, the bus came by and I got on... Very fond memories of this show, but the only thing I can really remember was being blown away by the climactic power chords in Terrapin!

Not Hartford, no Terrapin. Ah well, so much for memory. It was a couple of nights later, at Worchester.

Always a good crowd in Hartford. I was not much of hitting the road guy, but this marked the first of Ct, / Meadowlands/ Carrier Dome week. And to think SU was giving me a year to ponder my future. Ahh.. the merrits of higher learning. 1st time I remember Police herding you out of parking lots. Took my brother for his first show. Could not have had better opener for him. WPDH played Getaway as a semi hit in Po'town. I remember old guy looking for free ticket. Talking about seeing Jimi and Joplin for nothing. After paying $250 for 2 ducats last week for Izod show , I am now that guy; weeping for the $20 Hartford shows

The Worcester(not Worchester) shows were the previous week. And curiously the second night, the only show I saw on that tour, is not listed in the dead.net database! Dancin' opener, Help-Slip-Frank-Jack Straw to open 2nd set and Revolution encore. How do you omit that one?
