This was my first Dead show and I must admit I came to see the Airplane with my pretty but sorta lame girlfriend. I was hoping to hear Comin' Back to Me, and Today and then she would get in a romantic mood and...well you know. Anyway, I'd heard of the Grateful Dead...I liked their name and was eager to hear them. To the best of my recollection, the set list is backwards. I remember a bunch of fast songs including Schoolgirl but a mind blowing Viola Lee Blues to finish their set. During the last verse after the accelerando, the name "Grateful Dead" appeared on the bandshell behind them. Gave me goosebumps. "Who were those guys?" was my general reaction. During the wild Viola Lee, Bob Wier hollered out "How come there's no one up here dancing?" Well, they'd placed a plywood "Floor" over the Reflection pool that was in front of the stage at the Bowl back then. Almost immediately there were hundreds of people up there rocking out! A wild moment to be sure! I also recall smelling pot in a very public place for the first time. It was a felony back then and you went to jail for one joint so it was kinda risky to do that. Ran into a couple of friends from my job at McDonalds and they were all "Jefferson Who?" I've heard a very poor tape of this show but you can hear the energy. Also I believe it was the only time I ever heard the fast version of Cold Rain and Snow and Viola Lee Blues. Wonderful memories. By the next time they showed up in L.A. I was a hard core fan...still am!
