Second set roared, from start to finish. Big dance party; one of my favorite shows.

This show was the freak! God knows I was freakin' that's for sure. Danced the entire show in the hallways. It was pandemonium. The Boys were rockin' the house that night. Agree with fenario80, the second set was balls out. I just remember how quiet it was during Morning Dew. One of my fave show experiences.

I agree with you guys. This show was sick!!!!! Spent the entire show on the open floor! The band was sick that night. I wondered if it was my "state of mind" that night or is they were just right on. Hearing some tapes years later i realized that no, it was not just my state of mind, they played it out that night. The scene in the place was crazy. I remember some naked dude dancing on the floor. No one bothered him. Spent a cool set break singing amazing grace in the stairwells, groovin on the acoustics with 100 other heads. This show was it for me. The show in which I measured all others. For the next 15 years I was looking to top it. Not sure it ever happened, but, fuck, whos complaining!.

Sucked up all that fresh air as we rode from Western NH on Freddy's bike, crammed into that packed GA setting, I of course had to hang up in the front row digging Jerry's picking, suddenly felt a huge THUD on the floor. My poor buddy went down hard during CC. Guess that was his head. Not much air up front. He's pretty tough and quickly recovered for a really fun show. Portland was my all time favorite venue for a relaxed, intimate setting each and every visit. Miss dancing with all you great people! Another friend every time you turn around, be it Maine or Oakland!

Some great comments about this show. The sound the band had during this time was very good, it was very organic and flowing. I loved Brent playing the electric piano and the B3 he was really settled into the band and they were grooving and the bands sound was maturing. Remmeber when Brent cut his hair it was such a big deal. This show really was a monster and the first set rocked. Throwing Stones was very different then and they developed it quickly onstage. It was GA so it ws great to float around, we danced in the halls during the second set.Touch was so much heavier of a song then and really raged. High Time was great but the post drums was the highlight for me.Hearing Spanish Jam for the first time and Other One > GDTRFD> AM DEW> SUGAR MAG was incredible and it was my first Dew so I felt quite blessed. Plus they just started plaing it again that year so it was rare to hear it. Potland is still a small town to this day.

I am in agreement that this was one of my top dead show experiences and I don't know if it was ever topped. I arrived early with a large group of college friends. I stood on the scorers table the entire show and it was an amazing vantage point. The show kept building with each song. Duprees had just made its return and west LA was new but when they broke out throwing stones I was on the verge of loosing it. The song blew my mind and Jerrys deal helped bring me down to earth. My friends spent the break talking me down from a potentially bad trip. It was very heavy shit to think about. So I settled in for the second set.They start with touch of grey and my mind set changed to hopeful/optamism. High time described my state perfectly and by the finishing post drums I was dancing my ass off. This is one of the best post drum segments I would ever see for sure. If I am remembering this right, I rode to and from this gig in the back of an open pickup truck from Newmarket, NH to Portland, ME, about 50 insane miles. It was the day after my 22nd birthday and my 8th Dead show. For reasons still unexplained, Brent did not have a vocal microphone set up this night. So all of the songs were sung by Bob and Jerry, and combinations thereof. No one else. It is unique in that way as far as I know. Besides that, the set list was crazy good for the time. I highly recommend seeking out this show and giving it a good listen. The ride home was cold!

Every comment from this site and any other site says the same thing. This show was sick sick sick. Loved every second of it. I went to to this show this morning hoping to read why Brent did not have a mic this night. as the reviewer above states? No answer still after all the years. I had though maybe he was sick or something. But the next night we got Far from me. Maybe we will never know. Anyway this is a 10 star out of 1 to 5 choice. AMAZING

Was on this east coast tour before my 1st year in college began. Drove my Toyota truck all the way from California. Anyhow, this was definitely one of the highlights of the tour. I scored a ticket about an hour before the show. My friends and I were stationed in the penalty box of this old hockey rink where I could see the band really well. What stands out was some friction I was witnessing or possibly hallucinating between Phil and Bobby during the Spanish jam. Phil wanted to end it and get into the other one and Bobby didn't. GDTRFB was the perfect choice and all was good after that. Then the added surprise of Dew instead of a Bobby song. It was nice. Good memories.

My first actual show was March 81 at Boston Garden but was too drunk and passed out This was my first real show where I got it. I had been a metal head,but well dosed at this show, the Candyman got me. Music just flowed off the stage right into my soul. I was never the same again. Already had tix for the next night at Boston Garden. Wound up hitchhiking to NYC for the MSG shows, then New Haven and Syracuse. Did my first tour without ever planning it. Just wanted to go to the next show...
