Dave's Picks Volume 9: Harry Adams Field House, U. of Montana 5/14/74 CD - SOLD OUT

sku: GRA9900105

We're kicking off Dave's Picks 2014 with a visit to the Wall Of Sound era. Dave's Picks Volume 9 features the complete show from May 14, 1974, at Adams Field House at the University of Montana in Missoula, the Grateful Dead's only appearance in the state of oro y plata. This monstrously hot show is the third official show of the Wall Of Sound, which had debuted in March 1974. Highlights run deep including the second performance of “Scarlet Begonias,” a 22+ minute “Playing In The Band” that leans heavily on the band's jazz chops, and a second set jam of “Weather Report Suite>Dark Star” that contains some of the deepest jamming of 1974, and that's saying a heck of a lot! It also features one of only a handful of versions of “Dark Star” played in 1974, a song heading toward a long hiatus, and this one digs deep into some of the wildest spaces you'll ever hear. Rockers, ballads, and jams, 5/14/74 covers all the bases, with plenty of nuances to revel in, each and every listen.

Big shows from the 80s, very highly acclaimed....

* 12-31-81
* '84 Dark Star encore show
* 6-20-87
* Frost '82
* SPAC '83

I'd love any of these.

Dawn of the Dead

I have a copy of this doc. it really is the best one I have ever seen, really lays it all out. I got my copy in 2011, some of my Deadhead friends watched it after a Furthur show in my home town. I highly recommend it, any Grateful Dead history buff will love it. Amazon has one copy left, only one for 12 bucks, better move fast.

Rhino or Dead.net never got behind it, so it was not marketed to well to Deadheads.

Peace

@reijo; Fractal Whine

reijo - agreed on the cool links. I loved the NPR review, and the comments below it are either hilariously misinformed, or in some cases really interesting (like the guy who remembered attending a WoS show and watching Commander Cody, the warmup, looking up at the WoS and saying "I don't know what the hell it is either" - now that's a good freakin' story!)

I have no problem with people posting, often humorously, their desire for an announcement of DaP 10. You refer to it as "whining." But, hey, I'm tired of people whining about the whining! And now someone will post that they're tired of people like me whining about the whining about the whining! And so on. we have, ladies and gentlemen, a fractal whine fest :)

I actually picked up the documentary after (methinks) CB had mentioned it last...and it is good. The only complaint I read about it was that it uses a lot of recycled material (which is essentially unavoidable). I only watched it once or twice, so although I would vouch for it - I can't really remember anything about it - other than it has (at least part of) the well-known documentary by Robert Nelson from '68 (the trippy one)...maybe it's time to give it another spin.

I can't remember if I got it from Amazon.us or uk, either. Humph. Damn brain, you ought to work better than you do!

Surprising that there hasn't been a epic documentary on the band. A real top notch career spanning presentation. There is so much history there. It's truly an American Classic. Anyone have Ken Burns home number.

New Video Series?

Start a new video series of late 80's and 90's summer show's. Please.

I personally would like to have Oxford '88, Laguna Seca '88, Foxboro '89 and '90 Giants '89, Alpine '89, Cal Expo '89, Autzen Stadium '90, RFK '90, Rich Stadium '90, Deer Creek '90, Giants '91, etc. on video rather than audio.

Would anyone else like to see this happen?

I will personally listen to and enjoy every Dead release although I have my favourite era's.there are 4 Daves Picks a year.if the sound quality is there why not release one each from the 60's,70's,80's and 90's.then surely everyone would be happy at some point.

@ jcarrier & RFK - ABB & The Dead

@ JCarrier, glad to help. I too grab the D/L Series when they're on sale for my iPod.

As for theses 1973/06/09&10 RFK shows, both the ABB & Deads SBDs have been out for more then 10 years. AS I recall the ABBs [both nights] sound hotter then the Dead. Don't get me wrong I enjoy 06/10 very much, it's Classic '73 playing. The whole Summer great. These were very hot [temp wise] days in DC, high 90's as I recall. Looks like I'll be digging out the ABBs sets for a listen.
Bottom line these shows need to come out as a box of both bands, both nights. While DL2 is at it lets get the Watkins Glen Box out with The Band, ABB & The Dead [July 27 & 28th]

1979-1991 is WOEFULLY underrepresented, DMV, Cheers!

Yes indeed 79-91 need more releases. September 1979 MSG Box Set. . .. Now! {Beats Dead Horse}.

I would, nevertheless, thoroughly enjoy an 83-85 box. The anticipation regarding this announcement may be coinciding with anticipation for some Spring warmth and sunshine after a very, very cold Winter. Yet it could be worse. For example: Standing in line at The Department of Motor Vehicles.

:) Sending Cheer to where it is needed in lieu of a cd release announcement (:

DP#10...

Will clearly be some rehash from "returned" tapes of '70-'71. It will be a similar sound & narrow setlist/material to the other 1971 releases...basically because that is what material they had in 70-71, and that is what 2-track soundboards sounded like in 1971(vs. nice multi-tracked recordings)....

But beyond all the squabbling, where is the "spring box set"...lemiux spoke of digging through 1983-1984 in a rolling stone blurp, GIVE US A 1983-1984 BOX SET ALREADY!?!?

Cheers to SpaceBro for fighting the good fight...whichever era/decade you like the FACT is that 1979-1991 is WOEFULLY underrepresented...we've had enough 1970s release for the next 3-4 years IMHO

Morning Dew Video & NPR review

Thanks to whomever for posting the Morning Dew video yesterday. Also, the NPR volume 9 review was very cool. Posting those links is a lot more useful than whining that an announcement for volume 10 should have been made weeks ago. Kind of strange how some people feel like they are waiting on a DMV line until Dave posts an official announcement. Soon enough we will all know what's been selected. And then we will all migrate over & post on the volume 10 site.

GD & Allmans "The Longest Day" 6 cd Boot.

I would love to see The Suits around The GD & The Allmans agree to a joint release. There is a 6 cd bootleg which circulates titled The Longest Day from RFK 1973.

This goes to show you that if The Suits do not agree it means it gets done anyway and the band loses that money.

Hey Dave please get that September 1979 box set out before some bootleggers do( that I do not support ). We want you guys to get that money.

Hell: This boot is even on Amazon for sale!

I would tend to think there

I would tend to think there would be some legal/business channels to go through for any releases that has special guests or multiple bands, etc. And like the Dead, if there were members of the Allmans that didn't want it released for reasons such as not happy with their performance, they may veto the idea. But I bet it would be a heck of a release. I've been on a '73 kick of late.

The Allmans Bros org would never agree to be a part of a limited release. The clearances involved are not worth the hassle for Rhino or the Allmans. I assume this would be the case with most shows with a notable guest.

Dave's Picks 2 and Road Trips in 2011

Granted that we knew early what Dave's Picks 10 was going to be, I think that was only to boost subscription sales with the knowledge of newly found tapes that were to be released. A year earlier in 2012, Dave's Picks 2 was announced around April 9th or so. The year before, in the last year of the RT series, the April notice came around April 11th. So, I'm guessing that we will hear next Tuesday, April 8th. That said, I hope I'm wrong.

70s Dead Rocks !!!

I am officially an old man.Been a little Bitty part of what I like to refer to as Grateful Dead. Yes,part of Grateful Dead. An on going existing thing. Band and fans. One community.One thing.
There are a lot of different things to enjoy.Different bands to enjoy.
Some shows I can't get into. Weather it be,performances, Recordings,setlist etc...Others I can't do without. None of this has to do with an era of Grateful Dead. Especially the 1970s.I have collected 100s of 70s shows. At least a third of those could be a Dave's Picks release. I have not on the other hand collected 100s 0f 80s shows.The vault probably has some of what I'd like to hear more of. Just being selfish. Thought I'd share.
What ever they release, I hope its Grateful Dead.
With or without, Allman Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Branford Marsalis,Ornette Coleman,Clarence Clemmons,Neville Brothers etc....
Sorry 'bout the errors. Did I mention the Old Man Part?

What a coincidence, I was playing the first set of autzen 6/23/90 just a few hours ago...I have officially giving up guessing about DaP 10. I'm more curious about the reason for the delayed announcement at this point. Maybe his camera fell in the bay. Maybe somebody spilled juice or bong water on the master they were going use. Maybe the series has ended. Maybe somebody took all the money and split to Bolivia. Who knows? Not us Deadheads, that's for sure. In the dark, indeed, on this one.

Even the band knows it

In those moments, Lesh-says, "you're not a musician any more, you're not even a person - you're just there." But he.admits they don't come as often as they have in the past. "But you have to keep believing that there's a payoff somewhere. If it's not happening right now, there's always the future. It's been 18 years now, and it's still challenging enough. Sometimes it's challenging in a negative way - 'Okay, I'll show those bastards' - and sometimes it's, 'Wow, did we really play that?! Let's try and get there again!"'

That is why all the 70s.

Please accept the fact that the band you adored for a few years, wasn't nearly as good as they were a decade (or likely more) earlier.

Thank DG for the reference.
