Family Dog at the Great Highway, San Francisco, CA 4/18/70
Is it the Grateful Dead? Well, in name, no, but in music and personnel, heck yes! We’re very pleased to present a rare, unknown recording of the Grateful Dead from April 18, 1970, at the Family Dog in San Francisco, a show that was played entirely acoustically. Once a Record Store Day-only vinyl release, we have made this available as a CD exclusively on dead.net.
So, what’s the deal with this show, and this recording? In May, 2013, Mountain Girl called to say she had a few reels of Grateful Dead music and wanted to return them. They turned out to be from 1970 and 1971. Jeffrey Norman quickly backed them up, and we were able to check them out. Sure enough, this was music we’d never heard before, nor knew it even existed. One of the coolest things in this small stash was the 4/18/70 tape. We knew the Grateful Dead shared the bill this night with Charlie Musselwhite, and the NRPS, but they billed themselves as Mickey Hart and His Heartbeats, and Bobby Ace and His Cards From the Bottom Of The Deck. What the tape reveals is that they played just one set, an 80 minute acoustic opus featuring some expected stuff from the era, plus some shockers.
Street Date: November 29, 2013
Complete 80-minute acoustic show which includes six tracks of Pigpen's solo with acoustic guitar.
Limited edition, available while quantities last.

not sure what the fuss is all about i ordered today and got a confirmation .. don't see any where that says anything about back orders ... still in pre-order mode .. all ok
I just got one off eBay as a BIN for 30 bucks. I thought eBay would have a ton of these up for auction by now, it's 4:43pm EST & as of now there is only 1 up for bid. I checked a little while ago & there are 35 DP 8's available & only 1 4/18/70. Is it that limited or that good?
I guess this is the part that people are missing. The vast majority of releases in the past few years have been "one time events" Sure, they could continue to print thousands of copies, house them in anticipation of selling them or they can run a lean operation, knowing their sales, knowing their costs and moving onto the next project. I like this model because it is providing us with a consistent stream of product with a variety to pick and choose.
I have seen the posts on other threads and you are correct, they are getting pretty tense. Not wanting to create any more, just hoping that people will start to find the rhythm of the current scenario.
I am sorry, but you are comparing one time events with limited seating to a product that can be replicated hundreds of thousands of times. If people are bummed because they did not get a copy, I understand.
The complaints about this incident are pretty tame compared to other threads like DaP's.
My disclaimer again, I got a copy. It's arriving today. However, I still feel for the folks who thought they did not get a copy. Fortunately, the sell out was not accurate.
I will apologize up front if anyone is offended by the following...
This release was prominently announced in the Almanac which was sent out via email and available on Dead.net. It was at the same time as the 2014 DP subscription. There was no mystery and no deception. I am guessing many of us ordered both at the same time. Granted, the website and the shipping process are a little messy. In this case, Family Dog arrived 3 weeks PRIOR to the original shipping date. Win some lose some. To those who missed out (if this is indeed truly sold out), too bad. Not sure when you were on the bus or which coast you were on, but back in the day, getting tickets to shows was a chaotic, exhausting process of guessing on-sale dates, sleeping on side walks and tickets selling out 20 minutes after the doors opened . After a while, the pattern sank in, aided later by the mail order system, etc. So with this in mind, the current pattern has been pretty steady for a couple of years. Just look at the current system as the East Coast tour schedule. You will start to sense the new releases before they are posted. Check dead.net regularly, open and ready any kinds of newsletters and almanacs, don't hesitate to order. As Eileen Law said steadily for many years "Thank you for calling and stay in touch!"
just wondering if this also means that the 17th and the 19th were also among the tapes that were returned.
On me too; just ordered!
Once SOLD OUT is now available AGAIN!!! A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to TPTB!!!!!!! Ordered NOW!!!!
A day late, with a fist full of dollars. More, PLEASE!
Hoping for a great 1971 release this year from the returned tapes! I don't know what it is about '71, but I really love it. It's not the typical jamming I love; it's the band in a retooling phase. But, the playing is so solid with great energy.
I'm listening right now, sounds really nice. You can tell its an old recording, but it still is classic Grateful Dead. Jerry sounds really sharp on FOTD. The crowd in the background sound really calm, little did they know they were becoming part of Deadhead history. The band is chattering a lot to each other, fussing at Bear. Big Thanks to all involved in getting this out to us heads. Please keep it coming.
Looks like mine is due to arrive at my house tomorrow. Hopefully since no promise of limited editions was made, TPTB will be persuaded to press more.
A show like this should not be limited. I am fine with unlimited copied being pressed. Leave the limited for the RSD vinyl release.
That sucks! The only way I found the link at first was through the Almanac. Someone on the DaP thread mentioned already ordering theirs. If that person had not have posted that, I would never have known. Then, I've found it through the Store>Music tabs.
Absolutely ridiculous that members did not get an email or even a headline on the home page.
I feel for you and hope all are able to get a copy. If not, there's always Black Friday RSD for the vinyl...
That's life. I can wait until the 29th.
I'm told by the GD Store C/S Line that the item is indeed sold-out and to call back after the 11/29 back-order date. You'd figure that after dumping $thousands at the on-line store to help support Jerry's kids (et al), they'd at least give their loyal customers a shot at the pre-order!
WTF? I've been on the site mailing list forever and always get the notices for pre-orders! Why didn't I hear about this until I found it by accdent here? It's already sold-out? I haven't missed a release yet!
I ordered this last night, didn't notice if it said Sold Out then or not but I got an order confirmation. Order status today is "Backordered," expected ship date 11/29. So maybe there was some initial production run that's getting shipped out, but hopefully they're still making more.....
So cool that this music that's been dormant all these years is suddenly now shared with the world. Thanks, Mountain Girl! And David, Jeffrey, and whoever else....
looks to be sold out, mine is out for delivery today. nice!
My tracking number is working, and mine is on the way. I expect it to reach me by week's end.
Helpful hint: The actual delivery is through USPS, so the tracking link does not work for these orders if you chose standard shipping. If your tracking link isn't working, try copying it to the USPS tracking website.
I called Dead.net this morning to find out. The Rep told me that it arrived early, so they shipped it. My copy should arrive today. They never said it was limited, but many have learned the hard way about that, better order today. This will be a cherry on top of DP8 that arrived yesterday. Great month for us Heads.
Is this shipping now or on 11/29? I was going to wait to order it the Monday of Thanksgiving week however if you kind folks are getting shipping notices already I'll order it Tuesday AM. Like I said in an earlier post I'm an impatient one I'll order it Tuesday AM & get it Wednesday PM. If I order it online at 7AM EST, dead.net gets the order at 4AM PST, so the 3 hour difference guarantees true next day delivery. I'll have it by noon Wednesday. It just doesn't make sense to me to get a shipping notice 25 days BEFORE the release date. Is anyone else out here Deadland confused as I am? Please send Help on the way. HAPPY MONDAY, DEADLAND!!!!!!!
A solo Pigpen mini-set! With unheard songs!
Susie-> Candyman should be really sweet, too.
I also received a shipping notice very cool! too much dead music coming in, DaP#8, this release, Crimson, and several more Europe 72s just ordered, yikes!
Please post a few songs for a listening party. Thanks
I received one, too.
Already received my shipping notice for the Family Dog CD. Thought it would be another month. Excellent!
yes you will get an e-mail from dead.net with a link ... i got mine yesterday !!
i'm with you, this is gonna be a great treat and the beginning of an exciting month !
Really psyched about this one! I love the Dead's acoustic stuff, really will never have enough. Looking forward to the 30 Days of Dead soon. Nice to have so much great tunes coming our way. Listened to Dick's Picks Vol.19 today. The Mind left body jam>Morning Dew is awesome. Have a happy safe halloween. Wish I were going to show tonight. Being a responsible parent has drawbacks, it all comes together in the end. I bet WP, Phish will give a big nod to Lou Reed tonight.
I hope this show is in that stash of lost, now found tapes. The 1st set Smokestack> Truckin looks quite interesting, I bet it sounds interesting, too. It doesn't exist on the archive. HAPPY THURSDAY, DEADLAND!!!!!!!
This is very, very cool.
Is there going to be another 30 Days of the Dead this year?
Really looking forward to listenubg to this one. I wanted on cd because it makes it so easy to put it into my itunes and on my ipod. I am also going to by the record because records are the best way to listen to rock & roll at home. Rock was made to listen to this way.
