Dave's Picks Volume 8: Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA 11/30/80 - SOLD OUT
This product is officially sold out.
This item is now available for PRE-ORDER ONLY. Item is estimated to ship November 1, 2013.
It's our last release of the 2013 Dave's Picks series and this next one's a fox, literally. We're making our first foray into the 80s (don't expect it to be the last!) with the complete show from 11/30/80, Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA. Fans of "The Fox" often debate the merits of this highly-esteemed performance, as in they find it hard to narrow down their favorite bits since this night is replete with many. From a spirited opener with an era-defining rendition of "Deal" to a soaring and powerful second set featuring one of the best ever versions of "Scarlet>Fire," there's no doubt the band was on their game and sound man Dan Healy was too. As the liners put it, "fast or slow, Jerry or Bob, routine or rare: they nail them all." Multiple listens have been said to yield un-ending revelations (even auras!), you'll just have to tune in to see where you land on the spectrum. Wherever this exceptional show takes you, it all adds up to over 3 hours of extremely fun listening. Hotlanta, indeed!
It goes without saying that this one will sell out in no time at all, so your best bet is to pre-order it now...

No 8713 has crossed the pond. Terrific! For years I have sent prayers to GDP to enter matrix realm. Finally! I hope this will not be the last one. I guess there is a stock of strong 80s shows that quaify to matrix.
Im extremely happy with the Dave's Picks serie so far. It is hard to see how to top DaP 3, 6, 7, 8. Truly epic picks! A huge improvement from the early Dicks Picks days.
if you havent ordered it, do so post haste
you've heard most of the songs before, but the playing is sweet and the stage banter is hilarious
highlights are the two bobby songs before pig comes on, "uncle" and "mama tried"...straight up country arrangements on both, very unique. they sound like they are on stage at the opry
then you get to pigpen
You have to listen to the tape everyday
You cannot hit stop, pause, rewind or FF at any point
You have to smoke pot while listening to it

So, given that the history of Dead shows was set in stone years ago, in terms of what are the Great shows (Cornell, etc) and great eras, it seems that now: It needs to be completely rewritten. As in, release some more matrix recordings of 80s shows and see what happens... How much of the history was written based on the quality recordings available 20 years ago, and how much of that should change now?
Dave: You are re-writing history.
"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it." - Winston Churchill
antonjo, it's not just you. That is one weird and woolly Big River. As you say, the drummers are ON in this show, and they just take over this Big River. Listening to it, i thought at first I might not like this version, until I got dialed into the virtually new "arrangement" and then Zoom.
Never thought I'd say this, but my first set highlight is Loser.
Second set tonight...
Star Dark - Tell me again why you hate this show? If it's just based on the setlist, well, I'm pretty sure there's a Proverb about that too :)
Just finished the last notes of this tonight. Tremendous! Great pick!!
Too sleepy right now for a song-by-song, but all kinds of highlights. In fact, a majority of the tunes (including drums and space) are. Playin' jam is furious, sounding for a few minutes like King Solomon's cousin, what with the thundering drums and Jerry's runs, before it sears into even higher peaks, finally resting into a wonderfully soft landing.
As others have said, all of space seems like a long, inspired intro for The Wheel. The transition from a perfect China Doll into Around and Around is really fun. Brent's piano-then-organ solo on A&A, and Hammond magic on Johnny B. Goode, both soloing and behind Jerry's fans, just puts a big smile on my face. (I'll bet it did on Jerry's and Phil's, too.)
This isn't a Commandment, but maybe it's a Proverb: it's always a hot night when the drummers are hot. And they sure are on this night, down to the last song. They lead the charge that lifts the sweet but rather mellow Uncle John's into the wicked space excursion that is the finale jam.
This is the '80 I've been looking for, probably my favorite '80 release (along with Reckoning, of course). Thanks, David!, thanks GD! and good night Dead-town.
p.s. Is it me, or is this a uniquely tempoed Big River? Sounds more like a zydeco beat (?) then a railroad one, and I daresay Brent discerns the sweet spot for a lead before Jerry does!
p.s.s. Deal smokes!!! (Love the Sailor-Saint-Deals.)
LOVE that quote by Garcia in the newsclipping from the Atlanta Journal presented in the liner notes in DP8. They were definitely dialed in this night. #5599 arrived in Las Vegas today to much rejoicing. Have heard the first set so far, and am very pleased. Loser, Birdsong, Big River and Deal are highlights to me. JG was ON! Sounds full and warm, like a bearskin rug. Brents runs in Deal are exceptional. Tickets to this show were $9?! That comes to approximately $2 an hour. (sigh). Mixing a margarita as I speak. Set break! Lets all go to the lobby.
24 copies are posted on Ebay, having so many will keep the price low. If you need it, get it now. This time next year there will be few for sale. Listened to CD 3 again, love the Wheel>China Doll. The sound quality is really great. Get it while you can.
Hey now that would be something... such delivery of sets by region would imply a level of shipping organization that I'm not sure exists, heh. We should compare numbers (my DaP 7 was 11,334).
Got interrupted earlier, now listening to Must Have Been the Roses. You can hear the coughs of the smokers near the mic, and the music is also clear as a bell. Totally great.
Having had a chance to listen to the Scar/Fire a couple of times today I now see what the fuss is all about.
This may be one of my favorite releases in a long time - and I REALLY enjoyed DaP3 and Spring 90.
...called my wife on break at work and she said:"you have another package from dead.net." Cool, its the Family Dog. Stopped at the package store on the way home and the Dog Fish Head American Beauty Pale Ale is out so I grabbed a couple of them.9% ABV,(Yikes!) its got a kick to say the least! Anyway, this Dave's Picks is very good to say the least. Sounds awesome , great show. I like all the Picks, some more than others but there is not one I dislike. Keep up the great work guys! Certainly looking forward to next year's subscription. Western MA is rocking indeed. claney, I live in Western MA and I received copy #7495,maybe they are distributed numerically by area? Intriguing indeed...By the way the Pigpen acoustic stuff on Family Dog is fucking killer! Thanks for releasing this on CD guys! Anyway, Cheers to us all and Rock On folks!!
7438 arrived today in the Berkshires, Mass. Listening to the first set now on the Boston Acoustics - not headphones for this one, this show needs space.
So sorry for those of you still waiting - it'll come!
This could be headed to the top of my Dave's Picks list, seriously. I'll listen to this obsessively the way I did with #3 (1971). The SOUND - every little "chock" of Bob's guitar, Phil's rich bass, drums sound full and fat. Just exactly the right level of audience (whoo!) . Brent's "plinky" keys sound pretty de-plinkified (anyway I like the plink). The LINER NOTES - Paumgarden is just a fine writer (that New Yorker piece is a Dead-writing classic. And the BAND is completely and totallly on. And lordy, don't skip the Stranger opener... as some have said they did. Starts off a bit rough with sound but levels off by the jam and its a sweet one.
Congrats Norman and company, this is a masterpiece.
#3668 arrived today in Boston. Hope everyone gets theirs soon...
USPS Site says mines been hanging out in Hebron since early Nov 1. Remaining optimistic it will get here by the weekend.
That everyone gets their DP 8 very soon (like today). Because everyone hasn't received their copy yet I'm not going to give away everything about this show. I'm not a bragger however the one segment that is really cool to me is the Space. Did anyone else notice that the Space is very melodic & deliberate like it was just meant for this particular version of the Wheel. Until EVERYONE has their copy I'm not going to say anything else. I was on the fence regarding the sound quality now after listening to this let's just say I'm a believer. To TPTB A JOB WELL DONE INDEED!!!! Have a grate(ful) Wednesday night. Cheers
The USPS website showed today that DP8 arrived at my town's post office today. Huzzah!!! Can't wait to get off work. Five hours to go. BTW, when I used to do my cassettes back in the day, I always labeled them Drumz. That's just me.
USPS shows that my copy is out for delivery, in zip 90818! Not my zip, but it made it to the west coast. Will it show up on my doorstep today? Anyone's guess. Not the first time I have had problems with the delivery of orders. Was one of the unlucky few that had problems with Dave's Picks #3 also.
UPDATE: # 5073 made it here in the afternoon mail. looking forward to breaking it open. I just wish that the tracking was a little more detailed and did not leave us hanging on the status of our orders.
That's pretty funny. With the "e" key right next to "r"- bied shit happens. My personal favorite is the Hampton 91 Jerry release with the song "Shinning Star". DP8 just appeared today- hooray! There wasn't any tracking info available- until the morning of delivery day. Hopefully it arrives soon for everyone still waiting.
I am lucky to have DaP8 at home...but with no CD player in my car, and a bubbly family life (no other Deadheads), i need to keep waiting to hear the rest of this show (i heard much of disc 1). i can tell it's a sweet one.
Patience for everyone.
Hebron KY is the new Gainesville.
#4907 arrived in virginia yesterday. got the shipping notice last week about mail innovations. the tracking number never worked, so i just waited to be surprised. and there it was when i got home last night.
renumbered (1-24) and fixed the spelling goofs. isn't the cd sleeve sitting right there when people are adding the tagging info?? "Bied Song" ... really?
on a side note, does anyone know how Rhino/Dave decide whether or not it's called "Drums" or "Rhythm Devils"? maybe what was written on the original tape or maybe they just flip a coin.
really enjoyed what i've heard so far and looking forward to the rest.
When you track with USPS there is a spot you can ask for email updates. Select the Both option and submit. I just got one and it shows it's at my local post office.
And now usps is up to date. It will show Hebron until your local postmaster scans it in and sorts it locally.
Check again as I think the cross country orders should arrive today or by Friday.
Just got Dave's Picks 8 the other day. Generally really pleased with the official release and the matrixing with Bob Wagner's legendary audience tape. I have been listening to this show for many years and like others found the raw soundboard to be characterless and sterile considering the playing quality of this outstanding 1980 performance.
One beef I do have is the vocal reverb problem that presents itself mostly in the second set. I do like the subtle audience noise and cheers that especially works well in the first set. Vocal reverb problems are apparent with "Samson & Delilah," "Playin'", and "Scarlet". It makes it sound like you're hearing it from the back balcony at the Fox Theatre. Matrixing is generally successful but does present this set of problems. Perhaps for future releases try to fine-tune this if you go the matrix route.
The bone of contention for me is not that it has not arrived but rather that I was directed to UPS website with a tracking number and only by reading here did I discover that I need to go to USPS-The Us Postal system instead. That is my problem.
If the email explained that both UPS and the USPS -- two different entities -- were in on the shipping and that I could also copy and paste the tracking number from UPS into the USPS system and get an answer, well, then no problem.
It is rather like if I shipped something via FEDEX and then called DHL and said where the hell is the package I sent?
If I just received an email that DAVE"S 8 is on the way without a non functioning tracking number, I would have thought nothing and just looked in the mail box each day.
My Dave's Picks is also stuck in Hebron, KY. Been there since the first of November. You should expect this kind of thing if you order from Dead.net. Purchased a couple of CDs in my current Dave's Picks order, they shipped out separately, and sat at the post office 10 minutes from my house for 4 or 5 days. I thought my problems with Dead.net were a one time thing, but I am currently waiting for my Sunshine Daydream Blu-Ray set to arrive. I pre-ordered this and it arrived damaged (pages stuck together with glue). I placed a call on the 26th of September, and it wasn't until the middle of Oct. that I received a postage paid return form from Rhino. I finally got an e-mail thanking me for returning the item and my credit card credited. I wasn't returning it for a refund...I want a new blu-ray set! Since I received a refund I had to place a new order. Mary (customer rep) was very helpful with this and gave me free shipping. Dead.net/Rhino really has to get their act together. Ridiculous.
It's not Dead.net's fault that the UPS / USPS online tracking systems are not perfect.
My DaP 8 AND Family Dog shipping notice - tracking - showed that they shipped on 11/1...and showed a Hebron, KY location. That never changed - yet they BOTH showed up in my mailbox this morning (cheers!).
Yours will too. Relax.
This is why no more subscriptions for me. Free shipping equals no shipping I guess. I'm done financing the GDM's holiday season
My order is also stuck in HEBRON, KY since Nov 1st. I live in TN and have always gotten my order within 2 days of shipment. Starting to think something has happened to my order! Guess I'll hold off contacting customer service until the 14th. Bummer!

I believe all four commandments can be found in that one sentence!
... and take responsibility for the screw up with shipping. Enough people have complained about the Black Hole of Hebron, KY that it is obvious there is a serious issue. Get off your tails and get to work, if that isn't asking too much! It just seems like every release it's something. It would be nice if you can deliver as promised sometime.
Thanks Coconut Phil. It never would have occurred to me to take a tracking number from a private company and paste it into a government website USPS! Who would have thought that?
Sure enough USPS has info on my package being in Hebron ky.
I received my Dead.net email confirming shipment form UPS on 11/1/13 and of course as of today there is still no info available as to where this package is from UPS. I emailed UPS 3x but they have not responded.
If I had not read through this thread, I never would have thought to look for a UPS package in the US Postal system. Unbelievable.
It is but a small thing, yes, with there being greater issues in life. . .. Aw F-It!!!! Where the F is My Good Ole GD?!?!? Dammit!
Whew. I do feel better.
What Can Brown do for you? (insert Fart noise).
...And they won't do anything until 10 business days after the ship date. So I need to sit on my thumbs and hope that the USPS fixes their mistake, and call back if I don't have it by November 14th. I asked about what happens when the item ordered is a limited edition release such as this (like, do they have extra copies for this kind of situation, or am I just looking at a refund?), and her answer was a canned response that wasn't particularly clear. I have a bad feeling that I am never going to see Dave's Picks 8. I *did* subscribe for next year, but this is the first time I've ordered from Dead.net. We're getting off to a rocky start in our business relationship.
Had to run a few errands last night I was going to pop in DP 8 in the CD player in the car but instead I decided to put in my "Best of Grateful Dead Hour" cd there are only 3 songs and an audio documentary on it. The 1st selection is a 53:44 excerpt from 12/12/69, Thelma Theater, Los Angeles, CA featuring, Alligator>Caution>Feedback>We Bid You Goodnight all I can say is WOW!!! Uncle Johns Band>He Was A Friend, precede Alligator! So my suggestion to TPTB is release this show as DP 9 with 2/11/70 as the bonus disc. I was in a 69 groove last night, so I'll listen to DP 8 today. HAPPPY WEDNESDAY, DEADLAND!!!!!!
has arrived in the boondocks of upstate New Yawk. I've never heard this show before but just by listening to the first disc I know it will be a favorite for years to come.
Just for the record I am a Sailor>Saint fan... the transition here is not as inspired as later versions but I'm definitely not complaining, it is still a very strong first set. I cannot wait to dig into the rest of the show tonight, especially Scarlet>Fire.
Excellent liner notes too... Maybe I missed it but I could only discern one of the four commandments for the Fox Den... anyone know the rest?
'Thou shalt not press stop, pause, rewind, or fast forward'
I'm in the midst of Bird Song at the moment and really enjoying this release. When Little Red Rooster is tolerable you know that it's a good pick.
Already looking forward to Vol. 9!
Despite two emails confirming correct new address in California, my copy of DaP 8 just got bounced at my old address in Atlanta. Emailed customer service; based on historical experience, I'm not optimistic.
I got it a couple of days ago, right as my computer screwed the pooch but have been listening to it on a jury-rigged boom box, car, etc. I agree the FOTM is blazing. I like the B3 sounds and Brent's playing a lot. I like the "Feel Like a Stranger" through "Bird Song", I'm usually a huge "Me and My Uncle" fan as I dig the "Blood Meridian" vibe but this one is a bit sloppy for my taste. I am sort of "meh" about "Lost Sailor" and "Saint" but maybe need to let them sink in. I am digging the Playing jam through "The Wheel" a lot, the "drums" is smokin', tribal and LONG, just what I want in a Drums/Space. It's a good disc. I don't know if I'll really listen to the whole thing because the bits I like haven't moved me but I'll give it a couple more days.
I'll toss the great stuff into my Deadzilla playlist though as they are top-notch. Thanks Dave and everyone else. Another thing I've noticed breezing through it for a couple of days is that like the other Dave's picks, the vocals are really great. I wonder if that's a cherry-picking criteria of theirs, compared to the Dick's and Road Trips and other stuff where the vox range a bit farther afield?
Got mine last night... #2053 her on Long Island. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that early Brent Mydland sound! "Fire on the Mountain" is one of my favorite Dead tunes, and this one's definitely a keeper. That groove is just so sweet. Did I mention that I love the that early Brent sound. Oh, yeah. Check out Road Trips Vol. 1, No. 1, one of my most listened to. I am SO HAPPY that Dave picked this show.
The USPS site says my order was delivered to the "Partner Facility" in Hebron, KY on 11-01-2013. The UPS site has no information at all about my order. Where is it and why use UPS at all?
6053 Arrived in Philly today!!!! Grateful indeed!!!!!
By the way I love your username, cant seem to change mine.
I am in the same boat as you. However, I order Dapicks 8 the day it was available for pre-order w/ Terrapin Limited (#35045/?????). I selected to have them shipped apart so I would get Terrapin Unlimited early. I live in Alaska so things take a bit longer, but, I tracked Terrapin from KY to OH to Seattle. There it went to Federal Way and then to Clark Fork ID (A TOWN OF 500). The status said the package was accepted at destination and remained that way for a week.
After 3 weeks I got Terrapin and now DaPicks vol 8 is in limbo w/ no information available for the tracking #. Dead customer service can only say that it was shipped on the 1st.
I must say I despise ups mail innovations and hope dead.net stops using them. Until then I will only get exclusive releases through dead.net
I share your frustration
Sorry for the drawn out reply
sorry for your problem. I'd be p'd too.
what is mail innovations?
any help from the dead phone line?
"I can't seem to get to you through the US mail"
i hope you can get things fixed.
The shipping they use is an absolute clown show. I called the store to correct my address back in August for volume 7, and they assured me it would also be used for volume 8. The pre-shipping email notice for volume 8 still had the old address on it but also included "Note: If you have already contacted us to change your address and are not seeing that change here, please know that the change will be reflected upon shipment." Sure enough, the shipping email did indeed show the correct address along with the tracking number. The USPS tracking number now shows that it was instead delivered to the old, and incorrect, address today. The two people at the store that I've spoken to today said that all of their information had the correct address for shipping. So who the fuck is actually shipping it, and why don't THEY have the correct information! Total clown show.
I used to have this audience tape, perhaps it was a mediocre copy of this Wagner tape. I hadn't listened to it in about five years before I started getting rid of my old tapes in favor of the then relatively new CD-R technology in 1998/99. I never got around to replacing it with an easy accessable BT upgrade, this show was good but fell by the wayside. Gone.
I wasn't going to subscribe to the 2013 Dave's Picks subscription plan, but I did for the early-bird price. I consider the early bird price as "buy 3 releases, get the 4th one free" type deal. The 4th release is "for free" or however you want to look at it.
JACKPOT! I WON A JACKPOT WITH THIS RELEASE!
I always like the playing in this show especially the Scarlet > Fire. This is the sonic upgrade I was looking for, and a good matrix, too.
Thank you for this one!
Shipping status this morning says that it is out for delivery. The mail just ran, and it wasn't amongst the mail. WTH?
UPDATE: Just got an email saying that my item has been delivered! WHERE?!?!?! I don't have it. One thing kinda odd is that the USPS site says "Delivered - Greensboro, NC 27410" but my zip code is 27409, and the address on my shipping confirmation from Dead.net lists the zip code as 27409.
I frickin' HATE Mail Innovations. Whenever I get something shipped that way there's a 50% chance it will get screwed up. When the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in June 2006 & I ordered my limited edition championship gear, the mail innovations system screwed up my shipment & it didn't show up until 5 months later.
Yeah. I'm pissed.
i've said before that the 80's doesn't really do it for me (i miss keith and donna), but i popped this one in with an open mind (almost...i did skip thru "stranger") and i have to say, the sound quality is amazing. whatever sorcery was done here worked as this is one of the best sounding releases i've heard
really...it sounds like a dead show, which is an unmistakeable sound.
good job by dave/jeffrey/etc
listened to disc one last night...WOW. Stranger! Loser! etc. So good!
Thank you for this release!
I need to listen again, because i fell asleep during Little Red Rooster (it was late, and I was sleeeeeepy.)
I for one do it all the time, I'm not selling them, I'm just listening. That would be like saying the vines on this site should not be allowed. Thank you Grateful Dead for letting us hear and appreciate the greatest sounds ever recorded.
thanks for the help AddictionAddict. yeah, it still shows that it's in KY. I only live a state away in IL. It'll get here next week. lol. gracias amigo!!
arrived this am, very nice, thanks for this one, now, how about that florida run right before this one, that would be so nice.
