Wake Up To Find Out, Nassau Coliseum 3/29/90 (3-CD)

Digital Download

It's just too good not to! In addition to its inclusion in Spring 1990 (the Other One), we are proud to present Wake Up To Find Out, a three-disc set featuring the legendary 3/29/90 Nassau Coliseum show with Branford Marsalis.

Wake Up To Find Out is the official debut of one of the most sought-after shows in the Dead canon: the March 29, 1990 show at Nassau Coliseum, where Grammy®-winning saxophonist Marsalis sat in with the group. The entire second set is one continuous highlight, especially the breathtaking version of “Dark Star.” Blair Jackson captures the moment, writing that, “Of all the guest musicians who shared the Dead’s stage through the years—and they were many and varied—none embodied both the Dead’s adventurous, questing spirit and their obsession with beautiful melodies and accessible structures quite like Branford did.” Their performance of “Eyes Of The World” appeared on the 1990 live collection Without A Net, but the entire collaboration has not surfaced officially until now.

“When I agreed to sit in with the Dead in 1990, I didn't know what to expect, aurally or visually,” says Marsalis. “What I experienced was what I remembered music to be in my younger years, something that I'd felt was lost long ago. Process over product. No set lists, light shows and costumes required, but music first. It's an experience I will always remember with great fondness.”

Digital downloads will be made available on release date but you can put in your pre-order now at iTunes.

I wouldn't swear it in blood but I'm pretty sure someone said they checked one of the files after downloading, and it was 24/192.

throw me in the whalehouse

I'm up through 'Wake up to Find Out' on the Spring '90 (The Other One) box. Good 'ol Jer's vocal flub on Bertha brought a grin to my face several times today and I had to rewind it and relisten several times. I guess the only other place I'd rather be than the whalehouse is the alehouse, but certainly not the jailhouse.
The interplay between Brent and Branford on Estimated is fantastic, sublime even. True artistry and musicianship on display. The whole show is marvelous and inspired, the boys were having fun. If you pass up on the whole box, at least get this show.
The few criticisms I'd have on it (the WTF abrupt transition into The Wheel (What could have been!) and some tough harmonies on We Can Run (I'm looking at you Phil) are far outweighed by the positives here. If you are thinking about getting this show, do it. This show is like fine wine. It will only get better with age.

1 disc wonder 03/29 for the car

Take all of D2 and thru The Wheel off of D3. This fits nice on a 80 min CDR with 4 1/2 mins to spare with The Meat & Potatoes of this release. Try it you'll like it. Listened to this today while doing errands.
Enjoy, Weve

Getting It Right, Getting It Wrong

Nice to finally get some Dead in Hi-Rez. Would like to know what source was used. A cursory look at the wave forms would indicate a juiced digital source.

More important, the rookie mistakes: Files aren't tagged, and the beginning/end track points are sloppy. So, disc flips aside, no seamless playback.

At least I can fix those sorts of things...

wow!

Finally getting a chance to listen to this all the way through.

Back in the day, I had what was for the time a decent tape of this show, which is one of my favorites. However, it never sounded like this. Just lovely. Thanks to all!

Scar fire comparison

A valid comparison would be between the 24/192 download and the 16/44.1 download of wake up to find out, not the without a net version. Also, it should double blind - absolutely no one whether doing the toggling or the listening in the room should be able to know which is which until after all listening of both is done. Only then, and after enough trials (at least ten), where you pick correctly which is which at something statistically significant over 50%, will a real comparison showing a real perceptible difference be shown. Or don't :)

pitch-corrected harmonies

I was lucky enough to get an audience tape of this show back in '90, and listening to this show was honestly transformational for me. Even Bobby's off-key harmonies on Eyes seemed to fit perfectly.

When I first heard "Without a Net" I was surprised when I listened to the "Eyes" that came from this show that they clearly engineered it to remove Bobby's off-key harmonizing on the choruses. They made it sound like both Bobby and Jerry were both singing melody (how many times did you ever hear them do that on Eyes?). But Without a Net is a compilation album, so it seemed excused.

When they released this full show, I was psyched to get a clear, soundboard version. The boys were clearly on fire for this show. I was really shocked, though, when I listened to Eyes that it's either the same engineered version from Without a Net, or a similarly engineered one that again removed Bobby's harmonies on choruses. A few places they left his almost-on-key harmonies, but on the main "Wake up to find out..." lines, just like on Without a Net, it's again like he's singing melody with Jerry. Weird. I'd figured when they were releasing full-shows like this that it would be engineered for balance and clarity; I didn't think they'd go as far as changing the pitch on vocals!

One of the beautiful things about the Dead was the way they were fallible; their shows never strived to be picture- or pitch-perfect. Yet on at least this track, we get this sanitized version of the vocals. Kind of disappointing, really.

If you don't mind the recording being historically inaccurate, it's great. It does sound beautiful, and I'm happy to listen to it, but it makes me wonder if they're going to smooth-over these vocals, what else might be smoothed-over. Are Jerry's vocals 'corrected' anywhere? Any stray off-key solo notes removed? Are future releases from a 70's show going to start pitch-correcting Donna's occasional off-key wails? I certainly hope not.

Fantastic CD !

Received this yesterday, listened with headphones last night. This just sounds fantastic, man what's not to like. Currently spinning at medium vol. in the living room. Branford brought out the best in the boys.
If you haven't picked up it go for it.

24 x 192

I downloaded this yesterday in 24x192 to listen to on my system.

To the questions on whether or not it is worth it, I will just tell you that, without question, the sound of this recording in 24/192 is THE single best sounding live grateful dead music I ever heard.

It is astoundingly good.

And yes, it is true high resolution. I don't know the background on the mastering/recording/mixing of this, etc. but I can tell you that I have listened to my fair share of live Dead and this is TRANSCENDENT.

If you have a system that is capable of handling this level of resolution, treat yourselves.

For comparison, my friends and I toggled between the lossless Without a Net Eyes and this release's Eyes, and the difference was large.

The question is, will the Dead be releasing more 24 bit audio in the months and years ahead? PLEASE PLEASE DO.

I have never heard Grateful Dead like this in my home. Kudos!!!

Meltdown

Dark Star decays down into a wild hot stew that would make Ornette Coleman smile. Sounds like the Apocalyptic Meltdown! Branford hangs in tight with the boys. Somehow Im thinking the thought "These are some very freaky dudes" might have crossed his mind Hahhahaha.

Got mine today!

Showed up in the mail in Fla today. Would liked a booklet, but oh well. The tunes are crisp and Branford adds a sweet touch to the songs he's on. Sound wise it IS very well produced. It's 90's Dead with Brent. I have been in the 72-74 trenches heavy so I'm gonna need a few ins for ear adjustment.plenty to like thou. I wonder what Wynton would have brought to the party had he been along for the ride?
A good show with that added sexy flavor!

HD FLAC question

HD Tracks are offering this in 24 bit 96kHz or 192kHz options.

I'm all in favor of 24 bit music but I'm not convinced this is worth it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Dead recording shows exclusively digitally from the mid-80s onwards? I've read elsewhere that no one was recording 24 bit files before 1997 so I'm assuming this must be from a 16 bit master. While you can create a digital file from an analog master in as high a resolution as you like, you can't squeeze more data from a digital file than was there to begin with.

Hopefully someone can tell me that I'm wrong and that this was an analog recording or the Dead were pioneering 24 bit recordings, but I know that my last assertion is correct.

.......not a late Dead fan, but some very magical moments here. Everyone talks about the Eyes, but the Estimated is just wonderful as well. The MIDI that normally bothers me about this period of the Dead doesn't faze me here. A very wonderful release. I hope everyone gets their copy soon. Peace.

3/29/90 download

I wish they would do the downloads like the Jerry downloads with the choice of format and not thru ITunes. I do not use ITunes but would have to download it to get this download. Plus I only do mp3 if there is no alternative which it looks like here. Jerry downloads are available in FLAC. I did email customer service twice asking about this and did not receive any response. Not the best in customer service.

Next in the mailbox

Enjoying Dozin at the Knick at the moment and looking forward to this as it's the next release to come out.
The band sounds a lot different than DaP11 which is to be expected, being almost 20 years later. Just think of that time stretch for a sec.
They sound like a big polished stadium band to me here. A good thing no doubt. But those 70's shows sound more like a local band doing a block party sometimes. Nice to have the choice of what to play
The Dead sure had a nice long run with many different approaches, peaks and valleys.
The Beatles had 7 years and Zeppelin had 10. Time".................

Truth is you snobs are just as bad, if not worse, than the youngens who want to hear Touch of Grey.

I take solace in knowing people can enjoy the Dead anyway they choose and who really cares if they say they were there or not.

A must have!

Was at this show in the tapers section (my taper friend snuck me down from my rafter seat). You could tell Jerry was having fun (as were the other guys), but could also see and feel his reverence for Branford and Jazz come through. He seemed extra inspired by both on this night. We suspected we'd get a Dark Star, and did. After this incredible show we were packing my buddy's gear (we were close to the aisle) and two young kids came bye on their way out and (LOL) we overheard one say to the other, "Man that sucked, they didn't play Touch of Grey." Well, I take solace in the fact that they now, these twenty-four years later, are likely telling everyone they were there and it was great, and it was.

Mass market release

I just realized that "Wake Up To Find Out ..." is a mass market general release, and is available at many online retailers and at the few bricks and mortar record stores and large department stores. I checked the pre-order price at that giant online retailer (name witheld, but named after a very large river) and that price is lower than dead.net, and that price includes free domestic US shipping, their pre-order price is above their shipping amount threshold.
I could have saved a few dollars, like the price of a gallon of gasoline.

However, dead.net's price with shipping costs are slightly less than what I would pay for this item at my local independent record store or at a large chain store in my local shopping mall.
On the more positive side, I'm glad that this show, 3/29/90, is being made available as a separate item, as I didn't order the box set.
One great show!

@ Bob, you don't need to be a prime member to get free shipping, just spend $35.00. As we get closer to Sept. 9th the price will come down, but you don't lose the free shipping. Also this will most likely become Auto-rip [free mp3]on the week end before it's release date. This should go off around $22-$25. Something to keep in mind, you can always cancel your order with Amazon before it ships. They do not charge your CC until the item ships.

I went this way

Yeah the big box is nice, but 23 discs, it's just a lot more than I'd get through. So I bought this and Dozin at the Knick instead. I have the 2cd best of from the first spring 90 so with this and the couple Dicks Picks, and all View from the Vaults, and Daves 8 , I have a pretty good sample of 1990 on hand.
I hear this is a great show so I'm looking forward to it AND. Daves 11!

$5 more, but no shipping charges if you're a prime member...

With 5.95 rhino shipping almost a wash. The shipping choices is a little shady.

Shipping default choice is 7-10 business days @ $5.95, but if you go to the drop down you can pick 5-7 business days @ $5.95 too.

First noticed that the 7-10 business days was same price as the 5-7 business days for the box set. Once again the 7-10 was the default choice...

Still would love to know if you can hand pick shows for the downloads or it's all eight shows or just the Branford show...

Yea, I thought about getting the 2nd Box, but considering how many few spins the first one gets, I'm jumping on this release instead. I believe I was at this one as I remember Brandford playing the second set at one of my shows :-), but that may also have been an MSG show. Anyone?

Gonna have to dig up the Ticket stubs for this, but anyway...I know this is a hot show.

This should arrive just as I return from Lockin'
