Grateful Dead
Dave's Picks Volume 5: UCLA 11/17/73 CD - SOLD OUT
sku: GRA9900093
Dave's Picks Volume 5 is officially SOLD OUT.
"UCLA, basketball, and the Grateful Dead — it all rolls into one. Teamwork, creativity, imagination, electricity, fundamentals, physical fitness, speed and quickness, the fast-break, dexterity, flexibility, footwork, crazy fingers, communication, discipline, the beat, rhythm and pace, offense, sacrifice, structured freelance, soaring through time and space, a dream, vision, and a plan. Never had such a good time." - Bill Walton
If November 1973 is considered one of the best months in Grateful Dead history and 11/17/73 is widely considered one of the best shows of the month - if not the year, then Dave's Picks Volume 5 is sure to score major points as the first quarter of 2013. Dave's Picks Volume 5, or as liner note scribe Bill "Grateful Red" Walton puts it - "a three-CD package of life, love, and hope, with over three hours of glorious music, and a set and song list to dream about," is major heavyweight Dead.
A stunner of a show, the band come out blazing with phenomenal renditions of new material from the recently released Wake of the Flood, unconventional set starters and some of the finest playing of the year. The first set features one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever - widely regarded as one of the Top 3 versions of this song ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set shines the spotlight on the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes (the 2nd of 3 times they did this sequence), with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. To the ears of many, this is a top-25 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.
Mastered from the original analog tapes in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman, with fresh and fabulous cover art by Grateful Dead Comix artist Tim Truman and first-hand insight and wisdom on that very day from UCLA Basketball Center and student Bill Walton, this one is, by all accounts, incredibly satisfying.
A friendly reminder that Dave’s Picks Volume 5, like those that came before it, will sell out and fast. Your best bet is to pre-order it now!

Hey SPACEBROTHER i noticed that you said you emailed dave and he actually responded to it? I've emailed him about three times asking him some questions and he hasnt responded to any of them at all. I emailed him at vault@dead.net..... any suggestions??
Daves 6 has arrived under daves store.
Basically, I concurred with comments #394 and #394.
In my post that vanished, I stated that I thought it interesting that the only release put out from '88, April Fools Road Trips, was among one of the first to sell out. Assuming that they printed the same number, tptb should see this as a sign where the demand is.
Also in my post that vanished, I mentioned about my first Dead concert from 7/1/84 Pine knob, how I emailed Dave to ask if it was in the vault, and he did indeed say that they do have a PCM digital version and a cassette version, and that they sound pretty good, but also couldn't say that it has ever been or ever will be under consideration as an official release. I jokingly asked him if I might procure a copy of the show, where he responded that it would be like a bank teller giving away free money from the vault.
I had a follow up statement where I said that a soundboard of 7/1/84 has never circulated, and that out of the audience versions that do, the best is incomplete, and the others are only so so recording quality.
My first show from 7/1/84 was a scorcher from start to finish, but I may never get to hear a single note of the best possible source, unless Dave decides to put it up on the Tapers Section or Jam of the Week.
I don't know why my previous post would have been flagged for moderation though...?...I didn't post anything offensive or questionable...???. strange.
Hey, where did my comment go?
Spacebro, April Fools, a show I did attend, sold out about a month back. RT 4.5, aside form an extra 600 they found (which sold out within days, about a month back) has been sold out for some time as has 3.3. Denver (RT 4.3) just sold out, was teetering to begin with and now the sale. I do agree, I was wondering why it took until Feb/March 2013 to sell out. Next to sell out, in my opinion.....Big Rock Pow Wow (4.1)! I'm a fan of back, back in the day, enjoyed my 50+ run of shows in the 80's, especially my 3 Rosemont, center stage, 1st 10 row shows in '88. I caught opening Day at Wrigley, sat near the late, great Harry Caray. The story about how I copped those tickets goes back to the Parking lot, trading an extra for 1 Rosemont show and then, sweet karma........Finally, Bring on DP6.....I can't W8!
...semi-related to your comment antonjo, the (non-scientific) Final Four of the Road Trips series were announced. Two volumes sold out and are no longer available, and because they sold out the next two runners-up were nudged up to the 25% discount level. Not only was the April Fools '88 RT listed in the top 4 of March Madness, it sold out! Who da thunk, deadheads like '88 dead!
Re: Dap6, still hoping for a week of April 8th for the announce date...
So, "many" early & mid-80's tapes are sonically compromised. The obvious other side of that coin is, many are not. Perhaps not AS many, but many nevertheless (otherwise, why not say "most" or "nearly all," or even "a majority"). So while it sounds like an explanation, it really isn't. So nice to hear that "a" 1984 was seriously considered. Just that one, eh?
Looking very much forward to 6. Honestly, not to 7.....once again, I subscribe.....once again, my hopes for a mid-80's dash against the pavement..... Down to Dave's 8 now. The powers don't mind sharing that there'll be another Lost Tapes release in 2014. But no assurance of a mid-80's now, or ever, even when the subject is brought up in q & a. Zuckfun's comments are spot on.
If they wanted to release one, they would. They just don't. Which is fine, let the majority rule, if they ever were the majority (perhaps they're just the only ones left after convincing someone on high that they're the target audience...which then became a self-fulfilling prophecy) ~ but if I subscribe again next year, someone come and plant an oversized dunce cap on my head, please.
As for Dave's 5 ~ it came in my subscription, so it's only fair to review it while I'm here. Love the cover art & Walton's loving & metaphorical liner notes. Someone previously compared the first set negatively to Road Rips 4.3 (Denver '73). I agree that Denver's first set LIST is stronger, but I think UCLA's first set has hotter energy hands down. Looks LIke Rain is a highlight, along with the much-heralded Sunshine (the sunshine doesn't last long, does it? Followed immediately by the rain : ) Coincidence?) The big jams in both second sets are works of art; Denver's is a more unique storyline of songs, but can't imagine who wouldn't wish they were in the UCLA gym for this particular sandwich. The verbally typo'd final verse of Dew is baffling, but certainly doesn't sink anything important for me. Wish the Uncle John's reprise was longer, but only because I love the Uncle John's jam so much.
The real surprise, for me, was Disc 3. Maybe sounds pretentious, but might be my favorite disc of the set. Stella Blue sparkles, a blue ribbon version; El Paso seems more breakneck than usual, to excellent result; and another GREAT '73 Eyes, in an unexpected place. So there. I said I didn't want another Fall '73, but I never said it wouldn't be good......
Hey Now,
I read the announcement on some website that the new DaPV6 is from the "Houseboat Tapes" but
that is not true as I have heard Dave say these are from a new batch of returned tapes, coming to be known as the "Lost and Found Tapes".
Dave's Picks Volume Five is a great release and it's nice to have this forum to discuss the various topics that arise.
However, this item has been sold out for over a month, why is the new Volume not up for pre-order or just listening party or just discussion board ?
Many of the past recordings of the band are now true classics.
Some are not available commercially anymore, sad,
Most are truly unique in their makeup and tonal qualities and song selection.
As Dave moves forward in this current series of releases, I understand that the pickin's are getting slim, many of the vault tapes are incomplete,
due to environmental factors or electronic malfunctions, past or present, simple inattention to the recording process at the moment, and the greatest
factor in the unavailability of a show is the medium upon which it was recorded, so many early 80's shows were recorded only on cassette which does not transfer to disc easily.
As I listen again to the previous releases it makes me think about other shows which should see the light of day.
New Year's Eve was such a special show
and the 12/31/90 set with Branford Marsalis was truly Historic
Second Set

This show deserves the 5Star Treatment.
A DVD release, a cd release and the other nights as well.
Thank you Dave

...from the above-mentioned article: "Rhino Entertainment is set to release them on April 8 as "Dave's Picks 6," a three-CD set". I'm inclined to believe the announcement is impending.
I must concur! 4/20, 4:20, 4-20, seems too right to be wrong?
Look for a DeadNet posting on the 3rd week of this month, 4-20 looks about right.
The bonus cd comes with this edition, and is no longer available (it was only available via subscription.) If you listen to Dave's Chat, he drops the date somewhere in there. It was April the somethingth (or somethingst) I can't remember exactly.
P.S. Based on what other folks have said several comments up on this forum, I expect the announcement to come April 8th and the release date on or about May 1st (per the Dead.net email).
I'm wondering if we'll have a 'heads up' in regard to when they will be for sale. I'm thinking, if DP6 is being sent out May 1st, the GP(general public) sale has to be soon. I'm also thinking...... there are, at least, 3k available? It has to be the same number as DP5, correct? I know the bonus Cd's are done, or are they? My mind is spin, spin, spinning! Finally, As TP says.... 'W8ing is the hardest part'. :0
Come on you nice people at Dead.net, throw us a bone! Just a little more info about Dave's Picks 6 would be good. Getting itchy!
There's already word going around on the release date. I seem to remember it was mid to late April...
Hey Now........Is there any word in regard to when the non-sub DP 6's will be avail for purchase? Any...any?
Ah Zuckfun, you briing up what is easily one of my Top Ten official Dead releases - DP13. I love every second of that show - the sparkling first set, Dire Wolf, Big RR, and then there is the best "filler" ever, the hidden 30 minute Scarlet Fire on disc two, and then that second set jam fest from the Bobby Sands He's Gone (my favorite era for that song and my favorite version).
What seems strange to me- Did anyone think when Dick's Picks 6 was released- in 1997, that would be the only release from 1983 for the next 16 years (and counting)? 16 years is a long time. Or how about DP 13- the only release from 1981. The Shakedown Street from So Many Roads should have come with a disclaimer. Something like, Soak it up everyone, this is it from 1984. Is it a performance issue- no. It is a sound quality issue. Dick's Picks 22 was released, not because of sound quality, but because of performance level, in spite of poor sound quality. It seems like an error in reasoning. Or maybe not. Anyways, rant over.
I'm with you on the sound, I was hoping for either 10-5-84 or 3-9/10-81. If you listen to Dick's Picks 28, on the Nebraska show Bobby's definitely mixed low, especially in the first set. It looks like the MSG could remain a possibility if it was mid-eighties that was ruled out. Great Bird Song on that one. I'm hoping the mixing won't preclude the possibility of any sort of releases.
I have to admit being somewhat disappointment that an early eighties release will be passed over for volume 7. It seems to me that he's setting the audio quality parameters impossibly high.
When Dick Latvala was picking, he put out an '83 show from Hartford out as his volume 6. Even after Dick passed away, and the baton was handed over to Dave, '91 and '85 were represented by the second (DP v17) and sixth (DP v21) releases under his picks.
I've signed up for all of the subscriptions, starting with the last year of Road Trips, which featured a wider representation across the board ('69, '88, '73, '82 and '76 respectively) and the first two years of Dave's Picks.
The prospect of DaP Vol 6 '60/'70, being unheard and uncirculated in trading circles is what convinced me to sign on for this years subscription offer. If more unreleased/unheard stuff from the next years subscription becomes the sole selling point, I will likely opt out and just buy that one.
I personally don't care if the kick drums on the cassette masters sound like bap bap bap, or if Weirs guitar is slightly low in the mix. I'd rather have that than nothing. The '84 Summer Greek and New Years runs on db.etree.org sound awesome to me.
I wish he would follow similar suit with his choices for the final year of the Road Trips series.
Sorry double post.
The additional release of the returned 69/70 tapes will most likely be the enticement for the 2014 subscription (DP9 possibly). Works for me.
at 25 min in, nice 5 min discussion of DaP6
at 52min in approx, discussion of problems with many mid-80's show mixes
"DaP7 will not be mid-eighties"
at 56min in, "2 or 3 more releases from recently returned 69/70 tapes"..."certainly 2 more, one in 2014", a "mind blower from late 69"
http://www.ustream.tv/Grateful-Dead
so nothing´s for sure, just wait and see!
nevertheless thanks wilfredtjones
I don't recollect him mentioning anything date specific. He said there will be another release from the recently returned '69-'70 tapes (next year, I think he said). He said Tom Constanten wrote some of the liner notes for DP 6 and that the 2-2-70 Lovelight is an incredible and memorable Pigpen performance. There will likely be a box set this year, but it wasn't clear from what he said the size of the box or from what era it would be. He also mentioned something special is very likely in the works for 2015 (Grateful Dead 50 year anniversary). He mentioned they gave serious consideration to a couple of '84 shows for potential release, but tape quality precluded them from release (bad kick drum, low on Bob). It sounded like he favored Spring Europe '81 over Fall Europe '81. He said there isn't much in the way of indoor, or daytime video in the vault. Most of the video is post-'87. I think he mentioned something about an 'expanded' So Far, with bonus material but nothing specific in the works with that.
hi folks,
missed dave´s live chat ... so would like to know, if he said anything about upcoming releases?
the 2013 box for example?
new dvds? or so ...
thanks!
I suspect that there will be a cut somewhere in the second set, seeing as how Dave alluded to Lovelight being over 35 minutes by itself.
This is the first of the Dave's Picks series thats really got my anticipation on full throttle. Not that I dislike the first 5. There's plenty to love there too, but to get the opportunity to hear something that very well may not have been heard by human ears from the time of the performance 43 years ago, until just recently, and by the ears of only tptb, makes me feel like the archeologist who just saw King Tuts golden mask for the first time. I hope more of these missing nuggets start reappearing and get the Dave's Picks treatment.

I will be interested in what the DP # 6 is actually comprised of.
And potentially looks like there is lots to love in these setlists.
I can't wait for the next word.

DP6 is coming are you still where you said you were?
I received a mail today asking whether the shipping address that I had given when I purchased the subscription was still valid. The mail began with this:
"We are happy to announce that we are nearing the release of Dave's Picks Volume 6. This volume will begin shipping on or around May 1st, 2013."
So that clarifies that one then.
OOPS! Just noticed that the post below is nigh on identical.
april 8 sounds a little early. i believe a few in the past have shipped a few days early but not quite that early. hopefully we'll get lucky and it'll ship early
i just got an email today verifying my address was still the same. they said, " We are happy to announce that we are nearing the release of Dave's Picks Volume 6. This volume will begin shipping on or around May 1st, 2013."
on or around... so we have a chance.
#6 will ship on may 1
that april date is likely the date they'll announce it for sale
"April 8th
Looks like Dave's Picks will be released on April 8th so we should get all the news fairly soon. Nice article here mentions it:

Thanks for prompting me to read a nice little article!
The subscription offer for Dave's Picks 2013 states release dates of 2/1, 5/1, 8/1, and 11/1.
I don't think 4/8 is good info! Maybe that's the date it starts being physically manufactured or something like that....
Hey Dave, I think it's time to tell us what to expect for #6. We're waiting with bated breath.
Thank you.
@Brian2005l
Ah man I didn't even think of that link!
Plus too the link says:
Volume 6 - Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO, 2/2/70 & Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA 12/20/69 (ships May 1, 2013)
Bonus disc - Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA 12/21/69
I guess it's already been announced for a while.

@ DudeMan,
"Hopefully we'll get a full show release..."
I just checked and the subscription page had the following to say: "Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature 2 complete shows..."

In regards to my previous comment about DP's Vol. 06:
http://archive.org/details/gd1970-02-02.121042.sbd.miller.gans.flac24
Set 1 Cumberland Blues, Dark Star > Saint Stephen > Mason's Children
Hopefully we'll get a full show release, because whatever was played off GDH doesn't circulate on any of the current SBD's. One of the sources has Cumberland Blues, Dark Star > Saint Stephen > Mason's Children, Turn On Your Love Light (so maybe Good Lovin' is after Mason's and then starts the Lovelight > NFA sequence played off the GDH?)
Things are looking pretty good!!!
Hey all,
I was searching around David Gan's GDH log list when I came across this...

Nice little sneak peak nugget! I wish I heard it when it was aired a couple weeks back. I'm still hoping to see some material from the early and late shows Jan. 1st and 2nd 1970...the DS off the first night is SUBLIME. Dark Star > Feeling Groovy > Tighten Up
What is the point of your comment?
Unless Grateful Dead Productions (Rhino) comes out and states that there are counterfeit Promo sets that they did not produce floating around out there, there is no evidence that any promo sets on Ebay or anywhere else are counterfeit.
End of story.
Seriously, what is the point of these silly unfounded rumors?
Just join a bitorrent tracker and enjoy the ride...
Unless you're a collector and then facts matter, such as the authenticity of what it is you're collecting and the Promo version of the Fillmore West 1969 The Complete Recordings box set is definitely authentic.
?
The last year on ebay there have been my guess about 100 sold Fillmore West Complete Promo sets. You can go on ebay and find the sets that have sold.
Just want to set the record straight about the 'Promo' FW box sets.
They are in fact real sets and not counterfeit.
The counterfeit rumor started a while back from frustrated fans that missed out on the opportunity to get one and when they saw them being sold on Ebay and Amazon, they flipped a lid...
The box sets that say 'promo' on them were produced by rhino for Grateful Dead family and friends. There was something like 50 or 100 produced.
That's it.
I know because I own both a numbered one and a promo one (received at the same time as it's release) and it is definitely authentic.
Just wanted people to know.
...Here's my story with these people...I didnt start buying Road Trips until Vol. 3 No.3 , which I have the bonus disc for, so now I'm trying to get past Road Trips w/ bonus discs if I can...So I see on Amazon.com(which I love!) the Wall of Sound Road trips w/bonus disc for sale for $100! So I email the seller and ask if he'll come down on the price,He Refused! So I tell him its been out since 2009,sitting on your shelf,I offered him $60,I'll send him a money order that day,He still refused! So I said you can get the 2 cd set on Dead.net for $20, so he's charging $80 for the bonus disc! Still wouldnt budge, so I said let it sit on your shelf some more, best of luck to you! Its disgusting the way some of these people are,and the ticket dirtbags are even worse! They dont care about the people or the music its all about the $$$$$$$$$$$!!! I wish people well whoever buys these items, I'm done with the Robbers!!!
Note on the bonus disc for the FW Box ~ as soon as the boxes had sold out, the three-disc version was released. The first run of that release included the same bonus disc, and they lasted awhile, so there should be quite a few of those around.
(Though, like most of the pre-Road Trips bonus discs, it only came in an Office Max-variety paper window sleeve, so all a bootlegger needs to duplicate is what's on the disc itself.)
The original box was $80.00, as I recall.
Personally, I still don't see why the powers that be don't greenlight the cd-r proliferation of that box. It's never coming back, a lot of love went into the mixing & mastering, and it would beat the bootleggers & upsellers at their own game for the majority of heads whose primary desire is the music (rather than the collectible package).
