A stunner of a show, the band come out blazing with phenomenal renditions of new material from the recently released Wake of the Flood, unconventional set starters and some of the finest playing of the year. The first set features one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever - widely regarded as one of the Top 3 versions of this song ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set shines the spotlight on the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes (the 2nd of 3 times they did this sequence), with every second of it exciting and interesting. Hi all-----ordered the subscription for 2013, received notice that it had shipped on Tuesday, January 29, and I received it in the mail on the release date of Friday, February 1. I know that dead.net gets a lot of grief via these comments and I wanted to commend them for really coming through with this. Subscribers don't have the ability to choose what type of shipping they get so I was delighted it came so quickly as I was expecting next week.
That being said, the set is remarkable with crisp, organic sound that comes through even in .mp3 form! Kudos to Dave and the entire organization and here's to a great 2013!

Patience and eBay will be your friend.
In the last few months several copies of Dave's Picks 4 have been sold for $25 and under. Of course, they've also been sold for significantly more than that, too -- hence the need for patience. Put that payday money aside, and by spring you'll probably get what you want.
I missed out of several of the Road Trips years back (I wanted the bonus discs). But I was able to get them all eventually, at quite reasonable prices, by just watching eBay and being willing to let the overpriced and/or over-bid copies go until I could get a good price.
I am extremely disappointed that not enough copies were cut to even make the release date before selling out. Needed to wait for payday and now I can't get it...sucks balls
A little off topic, but this is an exciting development I stumbled across: Charlie Miller recently transferred 3/18 and 3/19/77 on archive.org. Two favorite 77 shows, and both needed a sound quality improvement. A big thanks to Charlie- Very few, if any shows on the archive sound as great as the shows he transfers.

Subscribing was a no-brainer for me. Thanks to Spotify I don't buy much on disc any more, so my budget is clear to buy DEAD DEAD DEAD. Those of you who are on the fence about subscribing next year because you "might not like some of the releases" consider the math: An early-bird subscription rate costs about the same as buying THREE of these releases separately. So, even if you don't like one of the four, if you subscribe it's like a freebie anyway :-) (If you think you won't like TWO of the releases, well then, why are you here, ha aha just kidding, sort of).
I am yet another who would love a 1984 or early 80's release. If, say, DaP7 is from 1984, I will be curious to see how fast it sells out. If it take a lot longer than the '70's releases, it will not help our case...

Five out of the first six Dave's Picks are from the same years as the first seven Dick's Picks. 1976 is the one exception- Dick's Picks didn't explore this year until Volume 20. It seems now is when Dave's Picks begins to turn a corner- Dick's Picks 5 is from 1979, and Dick's Picks 6 is from 83. One prediction is Volumes 7 and 8 will be picks from the 80's, maybe 79. And the next box set will be from the 70's- to balance out the second half of this year's picks ascent into the 80's. Then again, this could be way off. And with this in mind, Volume 7 or 8 could bring our first release from 1984.
What is nice is that the Dave's Pick logo does not cover over the artwork on this release (as on 1-4). Eventhough the packaging is bulky, I was listening to a few Road Trips over the weekend and these are near impossible to remove from the sleeves.

UPS Mail Innovations is much better than what Amazon does with their free shipping. Amazon has some sort of contract firm farm out their shipping. Untrained people use their personal vehicles to deliver the items to your house. Most of the time you are lucky if it ever arrives or if it does it could be weeks late. Never use free shipping if you must buy from Amazon.com.

Yeah I have a lot of experience with this shipping method. Basically, UPS picks up the mail and takes it to your local sorting facility. This is the cheapy cheapy cheap method for companies and it adds an extra 3 days or so to your date of delivery. It kind of sucks but it will get to you.....just add 3 days

I received a shipping notice and I am hoping for the best. Never had any trouble with the UPS/USPS combination delivery.
So far I am very please with Dave’s choices. Glad I subscribed this year and last year. Dave’s Picks 6 should be one of the best (in my opinion).
DP5 sure sold out fast. Maybe offer 15,000 per release next year.

I would buy that '87 Red Rocks box in an instant.
Whoever made the comment about sets that feature songs that didn't suffer over the years, e.g. Crazy Fingers, hit it on the head as well. I can do without all the Chuck Berry and Dylan covers (they're just TOO many, IMO), but some of those lesser played gems I am all about hearing.

'87 - '89 is definitely the period that I find myself going back to more often than any other.
For the next 80's release, how about trying to keep the focus on tunes that did not suffer down thru the declining years, such as Morning Dew? Bird Song? Crazy Fingers? High Time? I have a lot of favorite shows and tours from the early 80s, but when I listen now, I admit to subjective and emotional bias. I think '87-89 has the releasable gold in quantity. Gimme a thrashing Dew and Terrapin, lots of Dylan cuts, and Pocky Way whatever you do.
My dream Red Rocks box would be the '87 run...

Just looking at the setlists for these shows makes me miss Jerry and traveling across the country to see the Grateful Dead. Out of all of the runs of shows I saw between '84 and '95, Alpine '87 had to have been the most fun to attend.
David Lemeaux, if you happen to read this, even if the vault recordings for Alpine '87 aren't up to par, you should put them out anyways. Even if it's in the Tapers Section, I personally don't mind less-than-perfect audiophile recordings.

A very nice read in the New Yorker piece!
The "next big box" unveiling seems to happen the end of summer in recent years (since 2009), so we've got a little wait on that, if history is any guide.
But so-called "vault releases" are sometimes unveiled in the Spring. Last year there was nothing (OK OK, there was the "All The Years Combine" DVD box), but we got 5/28/77 in 2009 and 7/7/89 CD/DVD in 2010.
I'd really like to see something like the aforementioned Red Rocks box, or some other attempt at "venue canonization" -- Avalon???
I have no idea what the next box will be but I think the Spring 90 is up there with best of the official releases. Amazing playing, sound quality, and not very many repeats. If they release another triple-threat like that, from whatever year, I will definitely buy it.
So we can see there's precedent for releasing shows where they have not the physical tape...I say c'mon teacher guy 'give them back'!

In an article that was posted in the New Yorker in November of last year mentions several interesting things. To start off, Dave Lemieux did say that would not buy back something that already belonged to them. However, the article mentions that the Dead organization did offer the teacher $100,000 but the teacher declined to sell because he was asking for a million dollars. Although the teacher made the engineer, Rob Eaton who cleaned up and preserved the recordings, sign a contract stating that he would not distribute the recordings. But that didn't matter anyway, the teacher did not own the music and digital copies made their way back to the right hands. Some of those recordings were released as Dicks Picks 30 which were mastered by the great Jeffery Norman. Pretty awesome how things work out.

That 40 year-old music would get so many folks excited! Think about it, people. We are among the fortunate ones who "get" this music, and it only becomes more special when you try to find anything comparable out there today. So thanks to Dave and crew for this release. Your efforts to bring us this magic is more than appreciated.
On another note, I hope many of you caught Furthur's recent run at the Sweetwater, either in person, via the live streams or audio download. Phil and Bobby have something special going here. During the 4 show run, I heard versions of Morning Dew (1/18), Althea and Unbroken Chain (1/19) that rival anything performed by the Dead. Jeff Chimenti has Hornsby-esque talent, Joe Russo has more than two arms (just haven't got photo evidence yet), and John Kadlecik - well, he's really good. No, he's not Jerry, but he is the best replacement to fill that irreplaceable spot in the band that I've heard to date. Add the nice backup vocals, and you've got some really great music happening.
Those who pass Furthur off as just another Dead cover band are way, way off. Go to youtube for the shows on video or download audio from Furthur's site. You won't regret it.
Boston Garden-Cornell-Buffalo- Widely considered one of the strongest 3 show runs in GD history, and all three are missing from the Vault. Betty recorded these shows, and rumor is they were bought at an auction when her storage space became too expensive. Supposedly they are now in private hands, and obviously have not been returned to the Band. I recall a comment from Dave, that they're not going to pay to get their own tapes back. It seems that whomever is in possession of them, may not be willing to return them (without compensation). The consolation is that copies of these shows, and others, found their way onto the Archive, although the quality is quite far from Norman's magic.
...5/8/77 is not in the vault. Nor is Red Rocks July '78. Just ask Dave, he will tell you.
Ok, the Dancing in the Streets does say its from 5/8/77 and is from the sound board but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have the full show or they may have the full show and something is wrong with the tape. Who knows...

Since I went on a rant about how I upset I was with the customer service, I feel I ought to send another message explaining how they made it right. When an order I placed 3 months ago was recently cancelled, I emailed customer service to find out why. After that they sent me the same order with no charge and no shipping fees! How awesome is that? I actually think that almost too generous. Anyways, one of those items was RT 2.4 Cal Expo. Which is great! I still a newbie on the later stuff but I like what Vince plays more when Bruce is not there.

There are a few other 2-night stands that would make a nice little box: Frost Amphitheatre 10/9 and 10/10/82, Merriweather 6/30 and 7/1/85 or 11/30 and 12/1/79 would all make Brent fans happy. Everybody would love to see RFK 1973 released and it would make for an amazing 2-show box, but it's not going to happen. I like the Warlocks box a lot. I used to have CDs of those two shows. They were, in fact, excellent. Does the GD have any financial or legal issue with cleaning up SBDs that circulate, but aren't in the Vault, and then releasing them? Or is it just that, as good as they may sound, they aren't as good as Vault copies?
...Red Rocks July '78 would be released. Alas, I've been told the master tapes are missing from the vault...
