A stunner of a show, the band come out blazing with phenomenal renditions of new material from the recently released Wake of the Flood, unconventional set starters and some of the finest playing of the year. The first set features one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever - widely regarded as one of the Top 3 versions of this song ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. A little off-topic, but I've just spotted the tracklist for the Duane Allman 7CD anthology Skydog and one track on CD7 is Sugar Magnolia (with the Dead, presumably the Fillmore run in 1970?)

Nothing ever surprised me at shows. I was always just glad to be there wherever we were and whatever they played was going to be fine with me. My first show was also in Iowa City 3/20/71. It is great to be a Hawkeye. We had lots of wonderful shows at the fieldhouse which for a few years was called the Duane Allman Memorial Fieldhouse. That's where us midwest folks got their first taste of It's A Beautiful Day who opened for Neil Diamond. The Sons of Champlain came thru Iowa a lot. One of them was from Indianola,Ia. I think. And as for Jerry shows, '75 and '76 are my favorite years.

For a year that saw the Dead climb to their highest peaks commercially, '87 is criminally under represented officially.

Acehigh, you were at Iowa 2-24-73, WOW. Those February '73 shows are such a moment. Playin' has stretched out to full capacity, but the '72 model of either an Other One or Dark Star in the 2nd set is still carrying over, as well. Mind-boggling that over the previous few weeks Jerry & Hunter had come up with Eyes of the World, China Doll, They Love Each Other, Row Jimmy, Here Comes Sunshine, Loose Lucy, and a working version of U.S. Blues. I don't know that there's a finer regular-size release than Dick's 28.

Clearly my favorite year 1973. Saw 2 wonderful shows in Iowa. Yes, Iowa. Thankfully the Dead always seemed to come around Iowa. People on the east coast always complained about not enough shows because maybe they had to travel an hour or 2. We were thankful for what we got and then our travel area was Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Omaha. 2/24/73 Iowa City and the spectacular all day show in Des Moines 5/13/73 were memory burn shows. My collection is based on the 70's. Anytime I can upgrade an already excellent copy of a show I have to an official release version I jump at it. And I guess I am selfish to continue to want shows from the 70's. For me, '73, '71, '77, '72, '74, '76. Can't get enough. Whatever your tastes tend, enjoy.

Just to let y'all know.......My 6 RT CD's were shipped, today, as the gal @dead.net advised me. I've never had a problem and will never worry. If you feel it, you can solve it. I also would like to see a 1995 release, although I have no complaints with any of the prior release's dates, I do feel late era dead has been neglected a bit, so sign me up for that '95 release when its goes on presale.
The Road Trips from Shoreline 1993 sold the poorest by far. That's probably as close as they'll get to a mid 90's release
When Dave's Picks first started up last year, DL2 insinuated that the band was rather "embarrassed" by Jerry's decline and the overall decline of the music and that it would be highly unlikely that a release from those years would ever happen
I would like to see a 95 release I went to shoreline 6-3-95 and I thought it was a great show great setlist and I think it would be a great release
I'm looking forward to the upcoming releases and realize that many of you don't want to read negative comments (so maybe stop reading now) but I'd like to pose a question to those who have had problems. Have you had many problems with the quality of the discs (not the music but the discs themselves)? I own hundreds of CDs and have never had a problem except with Grateful Dead/JGB discs (mainly those purchased in the last few years. I'm not talking about sound quality but rather discs skipping. My road trips from 79 would not play the GSET on disc 1. They sent a replacement, it played fine once, now is ruined in the same exact song. Also there are several discs that won't "stop" meaning they just sort of skip at the end, not ruining the music for that song but not allowing the disc changer to move on to the rest of the show. Not the end of the world but frustrating. Doubt that it's the CD player as there doesn't seem to be problems with non GD discs.
I think about that scene in the Grateful Dead Movie where they're talking about going to the record production plant to make sure good quality vinyl is being used. I'm guessing those days are long gone.
I want to apologize if my rant was a little too intense. I had a few beers before I check my email and found out my order was cancelled. But, like Zomby said, it is extremely frustrating. Especially when Im trying to be very patient after 3 months. I love the Grateful Dead and I never had a chance to see them and I want to hear as much as I can. Their music has really been a lifeline for me during some rough times but thats no excuse to get a little crazy when an order is cancelled.
Have you at least heard the Philly 82 Road Trips? Thats one of my favorites. Great sound quality and a really great Shakedown Street.
I too prefer the more positive posts...the comments on the Jam of the Week or the Tapers Section, the excitement as a new realease is announced, etc. But when it comes time to order and receive the products, there is a reason things get negative. Customer service is spotty at best and can be super frustrating. I tried to order the Philly 82 Road Trips, and never received it. I had to put a hold on my credit card payment and despite a couple of emails from customer service telling me they were looking into it, my complaints just fell into a void. I still don't have that one because I just do not want to take the risk of paying for something I will never receive. I did do the subscription last year and that went well so I did it again this year. But I fully understand most of the complaints...except the complaints that the latest Dave's Picks has sold out. They have had the subscription available for three months. Gotta get on the stick, people!
Now, on to more pleasant topics...Dave's Picks 7. I nominate 6-25-85, Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls OH. While in the midst of moving a couple of weeks ago I stumbled across those tapes. Damn what a fun show. Probably one of my very favorite latter-day China>Riders.

I haven't had a lot to say over the years, but I have spent a lot of time on this site reading and connecting. The Grateful Dead has always been a source of fun and positive vibes over the years, and I can't believe the negativity at this site lately. Looks like I will just be shopping here from now on.
Dead.net/store has ALWAYS been unreliable. I don't think it is going to change soon, if ever.
There is now, and always has been, a real likelihood that whatever you order from their in-stock releases won't really be in stock. If it isn't, you'll get your money back. Small consolation, I know, but at least they aren't stealing from you! (Cue: Poster who they really *have* stolen from! Very exceptional, though. And I'm sure it's down to the usual one-hand-doesn't-knowism, rather than malice.)
It is definitely Dead.Net's own fault that they can't run a better retail operation -- but really, if you've been paying any attention at all, you just have to be aware that they simply aren't up to the task. They probably never will get that sorted out. The whole thing is held together by two unpaid interns working with soggy twine and crossed fingers, I think. Believing things that dead.net telephone operators tell you is just naive at this point -- history shows that they really just don't know, but they won't let their ignorance stop them telling you whatever happy tale they think will get you off the phone!
Will you learn about the release before it sells out?
Will postage be calculated appropriately?
Did it really sell out already?
Will shipping notification be meaningful?
Is it really even in stock?
Will the international customer be treated fairly?
C'mon, you know better than to ask!
It is of a piece with their continuing failure to run the non-business part of the website well. Much of the website (the complete historical Taper's Sections, for one) is still available, but damned if you can get to it easily from on-site -- you're much better off using Google to find things. Links are routinely dead (!) or pointing to the wrong things. There is a long-standing history of enterprising heads pointing out where interesting, desired pages are lurking, hidden by the incompetence of dead.net.
Future debacles are inevitable. Like the rising of the sun -- where? In the East! -- dead.net/store will continue to goof up without fail.
If only this weren't the only place to go to get that sweet fix!!!
You are not going to get better advice than this all year long:
**Subscribe when you have the chance -- then you don't have to worry over what you might miss.
**Buy the non-subscription releases the day you find out about them. Make the front page of dead.net your home page.
If you don't have the money, I feel your pain. But dead.net does not. It moves on, relentlessly, more releases are coming, the past is forgotten. They will, almost all of them, be limited editions because that is the only way they've found to make this business model work. We're a limited market, people. Did you really need to buy *everything* the powers that be saw fit to release? Then you'd better just eat fewer meals. Put the money in a cookie jar, you're going to need it. What will you do when the Veneta CD/BluRay box is green-lighted??? Prepare now!!

I, too,ordered the first 19 dicks picks and then stopped when so much became availabe for free online, and am now kicking myself. I also prefer cd's, but to your point, all of the Dicks Picks are available for download on livedownloads.com for much less than you'd pay for those reissues, so while you cant have the packaging, you can have the music.

I hate to be a complainer but I think this should be known to everyone out there thinking about buying something from Dead.net. On October 29th, 2012, I ordered 3 road trips from the website. ( Road Trips 1.1, 1.4, & 2.4) and my order was cancelled today and I was given no reason at all. It might be a different situation if these were sold out but you can still go on the website (right now) and "purchase" any of these three road trips. I understand supply and demand and all of that but how can they get away with this? 3 months?!?!? I know it wont happen but I wish we could go on strike and not order anything from this website at all, whether it be stickers, CD's, buttons, shirts, anything! They shouldn't be able to get away with this. I would maybe understand if it was a week later but 3 months and then all of a sudden...oh...by the way...your order is cancelled...have a nice day. Well, fuck that. Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing and, unfortunately, Im worried this is only the beginning.

This topic has been rehashed many times in these forums, but it occurs to me lately that the marketing folks (and the band members who rely on them) understand both the value of selling collectibles when putting out several archival releases each year (not flooding the market) and also the inevitable transition from CDs to digital downloads. I have a feeling that at some point these releases will be made available for download, and although I'm still resistant to buying music in that format, it's just a matter of time before CDs are obselete. I think vinyl will prove longer lasting. That said, I feel fortunate to have bought the Fillmore '69 boxset when it was offered, as well as things like 5/15/70 with the bonus disc (one of my all-time favorite shows). But I don't necessarily agree that people won't be able to purchase this stuff at some time in the future. We heads have SO MUCH music to listen to in so many different formats (archive, bittorrents, record store releases, Deadnet exclusives) that I think we should be thankful. (I say this while kicking myself for missing many of the final Dick's Picks. Have you seen what those reissues are fetching at the record store these days?!)

It is fun and interesting to read all of your opinions about each individual’s preference for what their favorite Grateful Dead era / song / year is. I think we all are just passionate about a band we truly loved and continue to love and remember what brought us to love them so. I have marked time, where I was living in a certain place or job, by what shows I was going to at that time and with whom. I have been lucky to have 13 official releases from shows that I attended, the oldest being Hartford ’77. Would I like to have more releases of shows I was at, sure, but not at the expense of some of the amazing early 70’s shows that has been released. I think what we state here has little impact of what is to be released, but hopefully as I and many other have requested, that the last 2 Dave’s Picks for 2013 come for the 80’s. I like the subscription program, not worrying about what a show will be released, possibly missing out and I do believe the limited numbers is detrimental to “sharing the wealth” with newer and future Dead Heads. Again it is interesting and fun to hear your opinions, Get Back Truckin’ On.

Great Here Comes Sunshine. And I love the longer China-Riders (who doesn't?) My favorite China-Rider, though, is from the Wall of Sound Road Trips, but only because Jerry briefly plays the "I've been working on the railroad"
TN Jed- My favorite cover is DP Vol 4. Like most everybody else. But I think they are great. And TIm Truman is great. How could you not love the Dead Bear/Bruin Bear connection. Plus the basketball and the liner notes from Bill Walton to go along with it.

Wurm, my point is Spacebro's exactly. More variety. If there's going to be a continuing stream of releases from throughout the band's career, then they should be throughout the band's career.
Few would dispute that 68-74 contained the most consistent & pioneering performances (actually, 3-23-75 might be their most daring of all). If releases are to be the most perfect shows ever played, then most every show from 72 & 73 would get released before most other years. But what I hear from the powers that be, right down to Dave, is that all eras are great and should be represented. If that's truly so, then let's have a catalog that reflects all eras. I dig only a few shows after '92, but I wouldn't begrudge someone who called for more releases from that era, even if I chose not to buy them.
Now that I'm going to receive Dave's 5, I'm getting psyched for it and I'm sure I'll love it. I simply don't think it was Fall 73's turn again yet. The Grateful Dead were making the most progressive and still vital music of any classic rock band in the 1980's. I think history should be proud of that.
And I'd honestly take quite a few '80's shows over Dave's 2. Had some great songs & energy, but I didn't find it essential or particularly special. Dave's 3 & 4, both tremendous. And I'd LOVE a Fall '68 release.
antonjo, no Dick was not god. Dick's point is that the grateful dead from that era are where the dead hit their high points. Those years are where the really good quallity material is. If anyone would know it'd be him.
For someone like me who didn't get to see the band in that time period make's this material more enjoyable to me as well. I figured it'd be the same for everyone else, but apparently not.
I'm also not saying that there aren't any good shows from the 80's and 90's either. I would enjoy those as well, but I just don't see where all of the criticism comes from all of the 70's releases. That's all I'm saying. People are bitching about GD music. Why!?

several of those you mention are very much out there already though like 5/17/77 and 5/25/77 (both are of course incredibly strong). Of course I'd welcome any of these getting the treatment but the April shows seem the hardest to put one's hands on a good copy of so to speak. Truly anything from the post-Brent 90's has to be Fall of 90 really through Fall of '91 and even that could get spotty at times. Or they would just need to pick really carefully. Still plenty of 80's Brent (the fall of 1982 is making the rounds at the moment and there is some splendid stuff in there, and as others have pointed out other stuff is under-represented). Still I love just subscribing and letting Dave figure it out. He's got pretty good taste. Actually wish they would increase the number of releases each year. Also very curious about what the next box will be.
