Dave's Picks 2013 Subscription

This subscription will end at 11:59pm PST on 1/22/13.

Last year's Dave's Picks succeeded far beyond our own expectations and became a true fan favorite, with each volume selling out in a matter of weeks. Now's your chance to become a Dave's Picks 2013 subscriber. Not only are you guaranteed all four releases for 2013, you get free domestic shipping plus the ultra-happenin' Subscribers-Only Bonus Disc that will be mailed with one of Lemieux's choices - in 2012, the Bonus Disc, sent out with Dave's Picks, Volume 2 was a fantastic collection of tracks from the July 29, 1974 show at the Cap Centre in Landover, Maryland. All Dave's Picks releases are mastered from the original tapes by Jeffrey Norman and include an informative and fun booklet containing notes about the show and archival photos. The good news is that an extra thousand copies of each release will be pressed to accommodate the heavy demand. The 2013 Dave's Picks releases will be numbered and limited to 13,000 units each. Dave is promising some great things for 2013 - so don't be left out!

Hey now. For those of you who prefer print to video or who are just tired of seeing me babble away beside the water (likely the latter...), we figured we'd write a few words about Dave's Picks 5, and what's ahead. The long and short of it is that if you're inclined to pick up Dave's Picks 5 and/or the 2013 subscription, you're in a for a huge treat. The first show, 11/17/73 at UCLA, is a major, heavyweight Grateful Dead show, one of the best of any year, and being top-of-the-heap from the 1973, that's saying a lot. It's one of these shows that every time I've heard it in the past decade+, I've wondered why it's not been released. I almost feel a need to apologize for taking so long -- 40 years! This is really prime Dead. First set material worth noting is one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set features the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes, with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. I say this without hyperbole, but to my ears and many others, this is a top-40 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.

We don't have much planned beyond DP 5, but I've previously hinted about a major batch of 1969 and 1970 tapes that were recently returned, and we hope/expect to get some of that out in 2013. I'm not trying to be coy or cryptic on the contents and possibilities, but we're in the midst of backing these tapes up and sorting through them. Once this is complete, we'll know what we have. What we've heard so far has shocked us in its excellence in terms of performance quality, song list, and sound quality. So, if you like peak-era Grateful Dead, with huge versions of major songs that you (and we!) have never heard before, this lost-batch of tapes is for you. Expect news on that within a few months.

- David Lemieux

Unveiling Dave's Picks Volume 6

We're really bad at keeping secrets around here so just imagine how hard it's been for us to contain our excitement about the 2 now complete shows, once missing reels for more than 40 years, that have been selected to make up Dave's Picks Volume 6. The first major return of material to the vault since 2005's Houseboat Tapes, Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature 2 complete shows with never-before-heard material from 2/2/70 Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO and 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Long a mystery, the riddle of the 2/2/70 set list has now been solved and the music restored to its proper - and spectacular - sequence. 2/2/70 is also notable as the first show without Tom Constanten. Tom, however, makes his return to give his first-hand perspective on 12/20/69 in this volume's liner notes. Pigpen fiends, ask and you shall receive. Both shows feature loads of Pigpen including a major 35+ minute "Lovelight" from 12/20/69. Recorded by Bear with an excellent mix and sound quality, this very special release feels like a return to the classics.

If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring 75 minutes of music (almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard), includes one of only three versions of "Smokestack Lightning" from 1969. You most certainly won't want to miss out on this highly collectible Dead!

The only way to guarantee you'll get these historic releases is to get a Dave's Picks 2013 subscription. The subscription offer ends January 22, 2013 at 11:59PM PST, so grab one while you can!

30 Days Download

Here's today's download for those having the issue: http://rhino.edgeboss.net/download/rhino/gdead/30days/2012/hight.mp3 - just plug that in to your browser and save it.

Yes, the problem is for anyone with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9. I also am unable to login (using wife's pc) and post, or add anything to my cart (Dave's sub for example), which I assume is also due to having the 7 and 9 combo. You got a serious IT problem Rhino, because your being cheap.

Hey you all: I'm 65 years old and all I want a pristine copy of the 3 Fabulous Fox Theatre shows from St; Looey when I was in college at St. Louis University. So do you! It was the first time I heard "Mississippi Half-Step" (and here we were ON the Mississippi!) and an incredible "Jack Straw", but the kicker was the mirror ball in this art deco 4,500 seat auditorium with its "shafts of light" through the smoky haze during "St.Stephen/the Eleven"!! Oh please release these tapes before I call it a day...

Thanks for the heads up on this one, guys. I downloaded the matrix from etree and have been listening to it all day. Wow! The whole show is top notch and the "Morning Dew" is stunning. Too bad the masters don't sound to be in good shape, as I guess is true of a lot of the early-mid 80s tapes.

Whatever is Released!

Whatever is Released, Im sure ill love it. Unfortunately, I've never seen the Grateful Dead live but I've been listening to their shows for almost 20 years now and because of Dick and Dave, I have reached good places listening to the shows. Because my favorite era changes frequently and easily probably because I've never seen a show but because of the Spring '90 box, I have a great new love of late era Dead! I assumed the Spring '90 box would be good but I almost didn't buy it. I kept looking at all the setlists and realized that there really weren't that many repeats and finally gave in. I am so glad I did. Shows that I already had (Terrapin limitied edition, RT '90, etc) have really began to shine a new light. Also, I bought several new shows from the later era and one that stands out, one of the best I've ever heard, is Dicks Picks 17. Sound quality, setlist, and definitely the playing, are all great! I will never complain about too much 70's or whatever. Im just happy that more and more seems to be coming out obviously thankful for the 2,300 shows (or whatever it is) the Grateful Dead played.

Dave, you make great choices!

Next Year's Box

Given that the box sets are selling out, I can't imagine that there won't be one next year. I kinda doubt it will be a Wall of Sound box, although I sure love that era. My guess is that it will be either '80/early '80s or '69/'70. We will see, but not for quite a while.

Next year...

I'm probably way off, but for some reason thought next year's Box Set will be from The Wall Of Sound after watching Dave's latest video. Of course this is speculation, and who knows if there will even be a new Box Set next year. Anyways, looking forward to Dave's Picks 4, hopefully arriving soon. 11/17/73- sweet call. And further down the road to the newly returned batch of primal Dead. I hope someday those in possession of the missing Betty reels follow the same course, and return them to the Band.

Angry Jack, Dr. Lunchbox and others who have asked for this show to be released...

I have done much advocating for the release of this show through all channels... I was at the show and it was every bit as good as the hype. I also have the circulating SBD which has all sorts of technical digi-noise in the first set and an audience patch for most of the second set. What I am told from those that tend the vault is that they do have the show but it is not in good enough shape for a dave's picks or road trips release. I can believe that... but regradless I think it would make an ideal digital download. I am hoping to hear that morning dew in sbd quality one more time before I croak!

How about it Rhino folks?

I can't say this is better overall than anything else on this strong tour, but I challenge anybody to find something better than Dancin' In The Streets, the set 2 opener.

Jerry is on old school fire there for a few minutes, but really the whole band is roaring on it. And the FOB aud is a winner. You gotta try it.

I didn't make it to Augusta, but my buds say it was a topper. I thought the two nights I attended in Hartford and at least one of the Meadowlands shows were just scorching great, makeup for a dismal Spring tour. I'd buy those Hartford nights.

yes, indeed.

10/12/84 gets a vote from me for release someday. i bet you it isn't in the vault. appreciate what we have already, i suppose. I doubted that show for a long time, and then listened again and GOT it.

I am going to continue to buy DaPs a la carte, even though i would miss out on the bonus disc. i don't want to buy a copy of a post-85 GD show ;)

11/17/73 will be purchased as soon as it's available for individual purchase.

ever think about those old hissy, off-speed tapes from yesteryear? I had one of those of 11/17/73. I have a CD of it...i am looking forward to a top-of-the-line copy with the new DaP5.

Just grabbed the latest Hunters/Jubal's trix (no. 93) which is 10-12-84. Let's just say I would pay handsomely for a clean, HDCD version of this show. Perhaps the best "It Must Have Been the Roses" I've ever heard and I'm not even all the way through the first set yet.

I like everything that gets released, but this one would be all killer, no filler.

Also, any love for 10-27-79 out there?

When I collected SBDs, I loved the October/November shows from '79. One of the most memorable shows I ever saw was the Buffalo show from 11/9/79. The energy throughout that entire show was different and more palpable than any show I ever saw. I was completely stoked to hear it again on the first Road Trips release. Yup, it isn't the whole show, but it's most of it, and I was thrilled. The Dancin'>Franklins to open the second set was every bit as good as I remember. I've heard those Cape Cod shows from October and they are great too. So I second that idea.

more 73!

I have to say that if all four of the Daves Picks 2013 were from 73 I'd be thrilled. In fact, and this is not necessarily a jab at Antonjo, my choice for volume 6 would be Feyline Field, AZ, fall of 73.
I'm not exactly dying for a Pigpen era show but I have confidence in Dave. Based on his seaside chats I'm guessing I'll like the 2013 series in it's entirety, just like I love the three DaPs I've heard so far.
Dave can be a bit of a tease, though, can't he? He tends to mention individual shows as worthy of release, we start to salivate and we're left hoping, wondering when, or if they'll come. For me the cruelest tease is the Portland 74 show which Dave mentioned a year ago as one that would likely be released at some point. How 'bout now, while I'm still alive? And while I definitely prefer 70s Dead (particularly with Keith and Donna), if you must release something from the mid 80s, that show from the Carrier Dome (Syracuse 84) you mentioned would be great.
Also, any love for 10-27-79 out there?

Rrot,

While others gave legitimate differing opinions in response to mine (I'd still love a Sept '73 horn section release, mind you), your attempt to categorically counter every point of my post, in a voice that talks down to me as if I'm a wayward child (like I haven't heard the same stories you have about what is or isn't in the vault in what quality) just comes off as talking points. Most of your points hold no water at all (Dave's been the official archivist for years now, long before Dave's Picks and through all the Road Trips and before that ~ just as one example). You even agreed with me once before that there surely ARE good mid-80's shows in the vault.

So man, I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, but will you please stop pouncing like Rhino's faithful Maitre d' every time someone states their honest criticism about a release? Below is my opinion and honestly how I feel. It doesn't matter if there isn't really a "club" ~ it's how I feel. If you don't have something better to offer than there's only been one box set from that tour (geez, only one?! along with the other 5, now 6, official releases, 29 discs in all), or to imply merely for forensics' sake that there aren't other great shows from earlier in '73 that were recorded just fine ~ which you know there must be ~ then please just let it be and agree to disagree.

Long live Dave's Picks. I'm happy for all of you who are psyched for this release, and to subscribe. I'm simply not one of them, and as a 20-year customer, I stated why.

In other news, re:

1969-09-29 Only source is AUD- Early Show (Doin' That Rag>The Seven>Good Lovin'>St. Stephen>The Eleven)

The Seven is seriously overdue for official release.

I think the problem with slow

I think the problem with slow posting is due to the way the site works:

1) You type in a post and hit Save.
2) Someone at dead.net reads the post and either approves it, cancels it, or calls a meeting to discuss it.
3) If the post is ultimately approved, there is someone else who has to actually input it on the site, and hope they include the same typos and misspellings as the original post. This takes time.

I believe that is why it can take minutes for a page to load after a post!

(This is just a joke. And it may not even load, so there.)

This site loads slower after

This site loads slower after you post than virtually every other site I have gone to on the 'net. What I do is copy my post, so that if the page times out, I don't have to retype it. I can just paste it and start again. Not too smooth, but at least I don't see my post three times, or have to try to type it up again.

How to avoid double posting

Clicking the save (submit) button twice causes it. It could be due to an accidental double click when you decide to initially post your comment, or more commonly, you're probably clicking the submit button again after some time has passed because you think something wrong happened the first time. Under no circumstances should you click submit twice, even if your browser freezes, or it just acts like it's in process forever (waiting for response from the website), or if anything else abnormal happens. Close your browser and reenter the website. You will see that your message posted the first time.

My 2 Cents

Though I'm among the folks who frequently request more of a variety of shows from different years/decades, and admittedly had some apprehension with each of the subscription offerings being from the same 6 or 7 year span, a 23 years not as represented in the official capacity, ultimately, I'm happy with the first four volumes.

When Dave's Picks vol 3 was announced as a '71 show, I considered stepping off of the bus for a while ecause of what I percieve as a lack of representation for other decades, when I recieved a message from one of Dead.net's crew letting me know that something special was about to be dropped. Lo and behold, it was the glorious Spring '90 box. My faith in tptb was restored and some.

Of course, my reaction to Vol 5 being yet, another mid-70's show kind of made me omewhat hesitant for a moment on renewing my subscription, but with the potential of something that has never circulated of shows not known to exist is way to tempting for me to pass on this.

As far as front of the house cassette '80s mixes, I don't care. Releasae them all. If the recording mix is imperfect, I don't care. I still want it in my personal collection. Especially Alpine '87 and some Summer '84a nd definitely more '88. I'm not as picky as many when it comes to the quality of the recording so much as I'm interested in the quality of the performance.

That being said, I don't buy into the notion that the Dead were only good in one era. The Dead were great in ALL era's, including the high and low points. If Jerry's voice sounded bad in '84 - '86, he more than made up for it by playing his ass off.

With another '73 Fall show now on the subscription horizon, it may not be my personal first choice, but eventually, I'll get to it. Wintertime, when I'm mostly locked up indoors out of the snow, I tend to to listen to a lot more music and sometimes I find it relaxing just to kick back and listen to the Dead when they were at their songwriting and creative peak. When I listen to '80s and '90s Dead, it's because I want to rock out.

Dave's #5

I've really enjoyed the first go 'round of Dave's Picks. Would any of them qualify for a top ranking? I don't know if it would. But this #5 is an essential show. No Other One. No Dark Star. But this show has all the elements - X-factor included - that any self-respecting lover of Dead music could want. It's a stand alone, unique show. I feel about this one the way I do about 6/18/74. I was going to subscribe based on last years offerings, but I think I'd do a five-year after seeing this one. On another note, maybe one of those "returned" shows will be a Top 40.

Looking forward to Dave's 4 - it will partner so well with Dick's 20. Thanks Dave and Dick. Yeehaw.

By the way Dave, you bear an uncanny resemblance to the bloke on the cover of your #4. He's handsomer though.

Sound quality and mix

In the 1970's, the band's shows were being recorded on really good reel to reel with customized mixes. In the 1980's shows were no longer being recorded on reel to reel with customized mixes but on things like cassettes from PA feeds. Listen to a bunch of shows from the early and mid '80's and you'll hear instruments missing in the mix. Bob, in particular, is very low to non existent in some of those mid '80's tapes. Quite a few of Europe '81 shows from the Fall have mixes that are very light on Jerry, Phil and Bob. Two of the years that exist in the vault in the best overall sound and tape quality are 1973 and 1977. That being said, I think that Dick, David and Jeff have actually done a pretty good job in terms of mixing up releases.

great choices, keep it coming THANK YOU

I was looking at my shelf the other day -- there sat the almost never played fairly recent Spring '80 and Spring '82 Road Trips releases. It's unfortunate to realize how much time and money I now feel I wasted back then chasing the dream of the glory of the GD. It had passed by then. However, I am sure there are great sets and shows in the vault from the 1980s that are yet to come out and I will enjoy those releases too. I know there are blazing moments and stretches from '80, '81, '83 , '87, and more. But every time one of those things doesn't come out and instead we get something from '73 or I wanna hug somebody. Is this a great series so far OR WHAT??

the '73 horns shows sound awful...i like the novelty of keith's vocal stylings, but no way do i need to own it
those shows can stay in the vault

very, very excited about this one though, great setlist and an historic sequence in the 2nd set

RE the 69/70 discovery, i would gladly eat a 1980's release or two that would collect dust on my shelf to ensure i don't miss a minute of the release that is to come from the returned tapes

between the 76 release that's on it's way and this 73 (and 69/70) to come, i am more than happy to subscribe

Regarding Sept '73 and the Horns...

I once emailed Dave L. about those shows, because I think they are unique and interesting. He kindly responded but didn't think they were all that well played.

This could be because I come from a business perspective, but it seems to me that there have been precious few releases that include guest artists. I can think of a song or two with Branford, and Matt Kelly on the Winterland NYE '78 CD/DVD, and of course the Dylan & The Dead disc. I have to think the lack of guests has to do with not only negotiating a side deal with outside artists, but also with the lack of desire to share profits. When TPTB have released so much live material, and they have, you would think they are looking for something more unique than another great Scarlet>Fire from May of '77 or whatever.

I would nominate a 9/73 horns show, if available in high quality, or 6/10/73 with the Allmans and Merl Saunders. Or even a major release with a whole series of guests. But I have strong doubts that it's ever going to happen. Oh well, it's up to them to release what they want when they want, and we're lucky to have so much great stuff to choose from.

Ok, I admit I'm too lazy to grab my Deadbase to crossreference with the Archive. Who's going to do Late '69 for us?? P.S. Now that he ostensibly has some previously uncirculated soundboards to choose from, he could really throw us some wicked curveballs in the "30 Days of Dead" promotion!
