Dave's Picks 2014 - Subscription No Longer Available - Volume 9 Coming Soon
It’s that time of year, when the Dave’s Picks subscriptions for 2014 go on sale. In 2012, the series was limited to 12,000 units of each release. Last year, we increased that to 13,000. And for 2014, you guessed it, each Dave’s Pick will be limited to 14,000 units.
And just as all releases in 2012 and 2013 sold out, quickly, we expect the same in 2014, particularly with the quality of music we have planned for release. The only way to ensure you’ll receive all four releases in 2014 is to subscribe.
For those of you who can't stand the suspense, news has come in about Dave's Picks Vol. 9, the first of our four releases for next year. We're very pleased to revisit the Wall Of Sound era, with a complete show that took place on May 14, 1974, at Adams Field House at the University of Montana in Missoula, the Grateful Dead's only appearance in the state of oro y plata. This monstrously hot show is the third official show of the Wall Of Sound, which had debuted in March 1974. (You can find more details about this show in the 2013 Almanac.)
Although we haven’t mapped things out too far beyond Dave’s Picks Vol. 9, further digging through a batch of tapes returned to us in 2012 revealed more than we expected, so you in turn can plan on something excellent from the 1969-1971 era, likely something you’ve never heard. We spend months working on each and every release to make sure it’ll be something that you’ll happily hear again and again, and we’ve already got some great ideas in mind for the four releases in 2014.
Show specifics aside, no matter how you slice it, Dave’s Picks subscribers get the very best deal – four spectacular limited-edition numbered releases, free domestic shipping, and a stellar bonus disc that will arrive with Volume 10, in May 2014. The last two bonus discs have proven immensely popular, so naturally we’ll have another cool, interesting, exciting and rare treat for you in 2014.

I'm happy to have the opportunity to get these musical time capsules sent back to us in a cd bottle for replay. Hopefully, 2014 will offer a nice variety to satisfy us all.
As for the Free Shipping on the Dave's Picks Subscription: as evgraham posted, the shipping charge is listed, but is then subtracted from your final cost at checkout. At least that's how it worked for my order. No worries. But I did discover that if you call Customer Service to place your order, they will charge $5.95 or $6.95 shipping. !!! So, no thanks. I took my chances on-line & it worked wonderfully. No shipping charge through Dead.net...> $99.98 Total Cost charged.
Looking forward to the music.
I saw the Dead 3 times; the 3 nights in London in 1990. Truly wonderful and mind blowing.
However, CDs at home have to go up against Thelonious Monk, Haydn, Beethoven and The Fall. There is no way that multiple '80s and '90s releases from the Vault can compete on those grounds. '68 - '74 releases on the other hand hold up repeatedly and very nicely :-)In fact, the Dead in that era hold up against any music I've ever heard.
Release the 90s Wembley shows? Lovely for me, but no where near as essential as just about anything from '69 - '74.
Someone mentioned that our cards won't be charged until Feb. when the first pick ships, is that right? Can't remember how it worked the last couple years but it would be nice not to have to explain to my wife about the money I just spent on CDs after all the good releases I've bought already this year :)
Somebody used the word "jubilated" to describe how many of us feel about DaP9 and right on, that's a good way to describe it. Really happy to know this is coming in a few months. I understand the desire for more 80s, I don't agree, but I understand. Still, there's a good chance that another Brent era show will be among DaP2014. It makes sense to try to lure subscribers with a show from the Dead's most popular era, mention that a rarity is coming also (69-71)and then release a show from a less popular era later in the year like they did this year.
I'm looking forward to another show from the newly found 1969 to 1971 stash. I vote for a 1971 show. 1971 is one of my favorite years, especially the Pigpen ones. Something from the February Port Chester run would be awesome!!
Butte-tiful pick, Dave!
The Montana wall show !!!!!!
funny, that last post is probably the most articulated statement i've made in weeks.
i guess if you can't debate... attack!
PF: he's rooting for a Brent show, ok there were some good ones. Enough said. I think all of us here love the band, no matter what we want to come out of the vault. But may I say from a bunch of us at least: thanks for the putdown! You're the best. At something, I guess. May you get up and fly away.
Hey all, long time listener, first time caller..... Just curious, I missed several years of Dave's Picks. Anyone know if there's been any buzz of them being available on iTunes someday? I know they state never again released on compact disc, so I'm hoping it means other formats later. Thoughts? I'm bummed I missed the Spring box set as well. I don't use the computer much and missed so many release here. I'm still stuck on Dicks Picks and tapes.
If anyone wants to sell any of these please let me know.
i really didn't want to stir the pot, but its hard to read some of the comments, and stay silent.
its bad enough we're going right back to the '70s after one '80s release, but when i read how jubilated some fans are to be getting more of the same, it really makes me sick. these are the same people who post crap like: "wish the boys were still on tour", "i miss jerry!", or some other equally stupid comment.
the truth is; if you don't like the last 15 years of the grateful dead, you don't like the band, so stop crying over the fact that jerry isn't alive, or the band isn't touring, because it really doesn't matter. you wouldn't be supporting them today anyway. you'd just be an older more bitter head, telling all of us who didn't get to see the band in the '70s, how much we missed out.
There is a reason that the 70s is the most represented decade. I, for one, am thrilled that this is the case. That said, I just think the 1974 soundboards sound "tinny"/thin - and for that reason I'm a BIT bummed about the DaP 9 announcement. However, I can't wait for the "lost tapes" to be released next year.
I got my subscription ordered. It deducted the shipping charge on the last screen (where you confirm your order).
And the Family Dog acoustic show from 1970 on Record Store Day - are you kidding me? There has never been a better time to be a Head (at least not since July 1995).
Why not a boxset with Greek Shows or Chinese New Years from the 80s
I am tired of the 70s stuff !!
It's really the Harry Adams Field House. Inside nod and joke for our friends in Montana. James X and Vishwa were there in 1974. There used to be an ad in the University of Montana free paper the Kaiman in the spring of 74 that showed the Dead's roadies giving the finger to the camera with the caption "We asked the Grateful Dead what they think about playing in Montana". The aber day kegger plastic beer pitcher story is notorious in Missoula circles. Missoula in the 70s was a cutting edge place. The Top Hat Lounge, Luke's Bar, Connie's, the Park Hotel Bar and not to forget the Oxford bar and grill (brains and eggs at 2am). And the old time hipsters Jay Rummell aka "Ace Wheeler", Frank Dugan ,Banjo Bill Wylie, Tony Angel, So Happy, Sunny and Barry Adams, Windsong . I love all you crazy MFs. Some here still and some called up yonder. Oh yeah Dave's Picks. "Keep the Mother rolling, one more time".
i've subscribed every year of DaP & RTs and went to subscribe again, as usual, and the store won't accept my order because my card expires next month and they don't charge cards until the time of the first shipment in feb. I tried calling and they won't take my order and apparently there's no manual override to just bill my card. Never had a problem before despite the same time of year, same expiration month, but hey, it wouldn't be dead.net if it was easy.
Happy day for most of us Deadheads, I'm squared away for 2014, it's just to easy. I was not charged for shipping. I'm sure anyone that was will be squared away. Hate to see some folks are not happy with DP9, to bad there are negative vibes. Looks like a great show to me. I'm sure 2014 will be another great year for releases. I'm a happy camper.
This is a great show, and certainly deserving of release. Was hoping for a more suprising choice- an out of left field 83 show, or a funky late 79 maybe. Perhaps in this time of disappearing physical media, the safe bet wins out. 1974 it is- Looking forward to it. I sure hope this series proves to be about much more than staying in the comfort zone.
"Dark Star rules! It RULES!" say beavis and butthead
Feel sorry for the 80's crowd, I think you are being short changed. But for me they can keep mining that rich pre hiatus seam for as long as they like. Plenty of nuggets left in there.
I'm a sucker for Dark Star, and this one does not disappoint, 26+ minutes, count me in. Really looking forward to the returned reels stuff too, nothing better than hearing a show for the first time.
I was disappointed with the last Wall of Sound (7.31.74)too. The sound was very distant. In fact, the bonus disc (7.29.74) that came with it was a hell of a lot better sounding. But the circulating board for 5.14.74 show is pretty much perfect, not sure it even needs that much re-mastering work.
Now can we get a flippin' Fall of '79 release next year, Cape Cod, Pitts, I mean come on, how long are those going to take?
Granted I would not complain if he released all of May through October...but that might take him five years lol.
How about we compromise and release a couple from the spring of 1973?
I mean those are the deepest Dark Star's they ever played.
3/28/73 from Springfield anyone?
I mean I just have to agree with some of these below comments.....SERIOUSLY, ANOTHER 1970's release!?!?!? I mean DP#9 5/14/74 is within a couple of months of 4 other 1974 releases (Dicks Picks, Road Trips, and Daves Picks #2)....and we can't get ONE release after all these years from 1984 !?!? Not to mention, 1981-1986 are so under represented it is not even funny. I mean I'm very happy with DP#8....but another 1970's show for DP#9 makes my decision for 2014 subscription easy...and not to mention the other 1970s releases we had in 2013 including BOTH box sets: Europe 1972, May 1977, Family dog
Here is hoping TPTB will broaden their scope of music listening...realize the 1970s are WAY overdone, and give us a box set in 2014 from one year between '81-86
I'm back in the 70s again
and it's a good thing
still buying em one at a time
how can you complain when the show has DARK STAR??? that beats the snot out of Blow Away or When Push Comes to Shove 1,000,000 times out of 1,000,000.
Now, an 89 Dark Star would interest me, but one from 74? I'm on that like a backpack.
I do hope this show's recording quality is on the same level, or better than; as DP #24 or #12?
The Road Trip Wall of Sound master's were not quite on the same level, granted that is my favorite Eyes of the World ever and I do love the girl who keeps screaming for El Paso and gets her wish...a complete ripping one at that too.
I am really curious what part of 1969 it will be? Maybe those Boston Tea Party shows to close out the year? Or maybe Fillmore West from November?
I do hope we do get a obscure and smokin' 80's or '90's release later in 2014 too?
I don't know the show all that well, but I love the era and the year. Some though not all of these negative comments are expected and reiterate a strange sense of musical taste and misplaced entitlement. I think the chance of another fine post-78 pick in 2014 is about the same as they were before 5-14-74 was chosen - pretty good.
May 2014 be another great year for archival releases, lookin' good so far.
..... have been fixed to reflect free shipping!
That was quick!
I did not get refunded at end of checkout, shipping charge reflected on my bank account.
My shipping was refunded at the end of checkout.
Cant wait to see what 2014 has in store!!!
I got dinged. I expect a refund for shipping charge.
I thought shipping was free with the subscription. Is there any way to get this fixed? Thanks!
For what it's worth, I am surprised another show from '74 makes its way into an official release. Not saying it's a bad show - just thought something from the 80's would crawl out of the vault. Oh well, as long as the music continues to be released!
Great, great choice here as a second complete show from 74 was long overdue. I was thinking about skipping the subscription this time around but I'm really amped up over this pick. I would have guessed that a 74 release would be the Portland show but will gladly take this one.
so excited.........yet, kinda weird since I haven't received #8 yet.
Charlie Miller board, if you dare. https://archive.org/details/gd1974-05-14.sbd.miller.114462.flac16
I for one am quite excited about the next release - May 1974? I love what I've heard from spring 74, AND I haven't heard this particular show. Unheard stuff from 69-71 era? Sign me up. (I have to believe they have another '80's goody on the horizon too, for DaP 11 perhaps)
PF is right about the shipping - I tried to order it online and it tries to charge 11.95 shipping. So I called, and now I'm on hold... "unusually high call volume" indeed.
... .... ... Hey, that wasn't a long wait, nice operator. Order is in :)
Can't wait to hear the Row Jimmy, WRS, Dark Star, China Doll!
No problem with this release at all, but I haven't had a problem so far. Just Grateful...keep em coming
I like variety. I like the '80s and '90s. But thank you Dave!!
I hope all of May to October '74 will eventually be released. It does not get better than this. And besides the 7.31 show, we have so few complete Wall of Sounds. (Dick's 7, 12, and 31 are all amazing, but are frustratingly incomplete shows.)
I imagine we won't get a '74 for a while now (but DP2014 as something like: '74, '69, '71, and then something from the '80s); I am just so thrilled to get at least one Wall of Sound in 2014.
Dark Star. Dark Star. Dark Star.
(I'm also happy the focus is on the best music rather than a quantitative notion of equal distribution of years... but we've had that debate again and again, coming around and around).
I've had the '74 Missoula for years, and it is a good show, but the oversaturation of official '70s releases is putting me on the fence to order this subscription.
DaP vol 2 is a '74 show. Why revisit a year they just recently released?
I share some of the above disappointment at the unwillingness of tptb to step outside of the '70s bubble.
i got charged for shipping.....shoulda read Pfox
WRS Part 1
Let It Grow
just a word of advice; pay over the phone, so you get free delivery. for some reason the website adds shipping charges during checkout.
really Dave another 70s one this really really sucks not subscribing this year
And we now know, when the wife gets home from work she will be lead by the hand to the computer and will preorder my Christmas present. Yes I'm a little disappointed by the Volume 9 release however I cannot resist. I don't to miss out what is going to be released in 2014. Now all we have to do is wait for RSD, Black Friday, 4/17/70 To be a Deadhead in 2013 it's been a wild ride. STAY DEAD!!!!
Another 70's release.
Not complaining; just saying.
one brent show, and then right back to keith era dead.
i have to admit i'm disappointed.
