Dave's Picks Volume 10: Thelma, Los Angeles, CA 12/12/69 - SOLD OUT
The last of a three-night run at a mysterious little club called "Thelma" found the Grateful Dead restoring glory to the Sunset Strip for what was once just a fleeting moment, now preserved for eternity with this here Dave's Picks Volume 10. Hot off the release of the highly-acclaimed Live/Dead and setting the stage for Workingman's Dead, 12/12/69 stands to represent the crux of the band's musical past, present, and future. Witness the first signs of country, folk, and Americana infiltrating an otherwise wildly experimental and anarchic period, evidenced by Pigpen-driven classics like "I'm A King Bee," "Hard To Handle," "Good Lovin'" and a whopping 30 minute+ version of "Turn On Your Lovelight," as well as over a half dozen then-new compositions which show the Garcia/Hunter songwriting duo elevating the Dead to higher ground. Thelma turns the heat up indeed!
Mastered in HDCD from the original soundboard recordings produced by Owsley Stanley, featuring the once lost, now found first reel, this is one full show you won't want to miss. Pre-order it here and now!
3 Disc set
Limited to 14,000 individually numbered copies
Mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman

Waiting? How about the SIX YEAR wait between "Dead Set" and "In The Dark"??
It's gone folks. See you Thursday at the meet up in Warrenville, IL. Have a Grateful Day.
Does anyone else feel that the wait for Thelma was the absolute worst announcement wait of all time thus far? It's all good now!
Got ya… one of the things lost on the Inet… facetiousness (right tense?) ;)
the karma trigger that has delayed an announcement.
Actually, I don't believe that. Dave's not the vindictive type. Perhaps he agreed to delay the 1990 announcement to give the Jerry vault folks a chance to announce a release and the 1990 box was slightly delayed getting ready for pre-order, thus the inevitable, inexorable DP 11 news is simply getting pushed back a bit.
My theory, at least. I have the subscription, so I'm set. But I always pick up a copy of DPs for a buddy who lives in a cabin in the woods without Internet. He caught the band in San Fran on March 18, 1967, and many times thereafter. HIS vault would stagger you. 6,000-7,000 LPs and maybe 4,000-5,000 CDs. And he can still hear (when he wants to).
Let's put it this way: he asked for copies of all my unofficial GD and I actually burned out (i.e., destroyed) a Tascam disc burner doing the job. But we "got 'er done"!
loading up 5/16 right now…
Jer flubs some lyrics on 5/15… so don't think that release will happen?
Yes, the band started in '65.
I was being facetious, to quell the bitching.
As Dave apparently has said, "Why would anyone bitch?" Said like a courteous Canadian.
Funny 5/15 is mentioned, my personal favorite is 5/16. Great on paper, great in execution, just, well, great all around! Couple years ago I emailed a suggestion to DL for this one. And bonus it's Barton Hall in Cornell! Magic happened there!
One can dream. After the glorious news of the Spring '90 box I feel greedy pining away for news of the next Dave's Pick but so close to shipping day you'd think we'd know by now!
Who's the dude that hacked and got the artwork of Thelma early? Put him on the job!
C'mon...he peeks. Right?
What would be really funny is if DL2 did read these boards, and erased a reel from 1986 every time RV3 posted something obnoxious.
He gets to pick the FKN releases, and he obviously picks his favorite years which are 1969-1978....some of us like the rest of the years the Dead played i.e. - 1979-1995
I had an email exchange with DL last week. I mentioned that he could not please everybody and that there will always be bitching. He said "Bitching? Who / why would anyone bitch?" So I think that proves once and for all that he does not read these posts, or he certainly would know from bitching! He mentioned that he is too busy to read internet stuff.
Schools out for summer!!!
"make it a 1964 show."
That is why I come to this site, to learn, but thought the band started in 1965?
I'd announce on July 31 and make it a 1964 show.....
Loaded up the 5/15 show for the ride home - thanks
5/15/81 on paper couldn't look any better, not sure if DL has a great soundboard or not.
3/10/81 would be perfect, and the Greek Theatre run in Sept. 1981 would be just fine..
you must have been a sailor
what 81 would you suggest?
There is NO way he will have the first 3 releases for his DP series in 2014: 1974,1969, 1972 (1971 or 1973)....That is just too close minded & TOO narrow a time period...the first 3 of 4 DAVE PICKS from 2014 from a 4-5 year window, when the Dead had a 30 year career...gotta be FKN kiddin' me!?!?
Just because we're getting the SPRING 1990 TOO box set (which looks great), doesn't mean that the "Brent years fix" has been taken care of....1980-1981 is ten years earlier & a whole different music era/sound for the Dead...bring on 19 FKN 81...or for that matter give us that long talked about 1984 Dave Picks release...
When the F are we getting the announcement, last year they gave the seaside chat for the August release on 7/8/13, WTF!?!?!? Today already...
Don't understand the concrete refusal to release Dave's Picks (preferably all of them) on Digital Download. This does not lessen the "collector" value of the CD set and would generate massive sales and be a great service to those of us who have no use for a CD. It would be great to be able purchase these either here on on iTunes. Either as a set or a deluxe box like the Road Trips collection.
We all know the stories and opinions about the bands performance at major events but...the Woodstock set is worthy of a spin every so often IMHO. The Monterrey Pop set is as well. I like to venture into the not considered great performance category every once in awhile. Every grey lining has a touch of silver. Here we are folks...Monday Monday.
I sent you a PM that might interest you..
Here's a streaming site with a lot of Dead. Be sure to check this one out at a little past 14 minutes and again at around 40 minutes to see Pigpen saving their asses with a killer Lovelight at Woodstock.
The Wichita show looks tasty indeed!! Me believe Da11 will be this week; maybe Thursday? I will settle for tomorrow. I am also excited to see Tony M's cover. The last two covers have been sweet!!! And the filling inside has been sooo smooth.
Already thinking of the monster release year 2015 just might be. My curious mind is already trying to sort it out. Bolo will be coming in strong with some crafty clues.
I don't think it'll be from the 80s (or beyond.) They're already satiating later half fans with the Spring '90 box which has the 60s/70s only crowd in a tizzy so I think to play it safe we'll get something vintage. Either way it'll be beautiful. The '72 show everyone has been guessing would be wonderful. Whatever it is, I can't wait to give it a spin, and then another, and then another, and then...
If it's 1972 my money is on 10/2/72 Springfield!
Jam packed with !!!, the band played Jack Straw (the only cut that is cut from this lone board),the show was in Wichita! And there's a TOO in there. Like TOO? ;) It'd be a 3 'full' CD release, me thinks.
Grateful to Mike Lai for putting this out there!!!!
The Promised Land
Me And My Uncle
Black Throated Wind
Box Of Rain
Don't Ease Me In
Beat It On Down The Line

I'm typically wrong with this guessing stuff folks. Now that Thelma has been done, comparing it to last years release with bonus material that was returned I think we are going to get a show that is already out there but received the "touch" from DL et Al. I posted this yesterday on the Spring 90 TOO thread and I will subject some of you to it again. Here tis':
It's in the realm of possibility that the next Dave's Picks release is one of the shows of which a song was featured on the 2013 30 Days of Dead. Just a hunch folks.
The 2012 30 Days of Dead had one track from the May 1977 Box on it. No tracks from 2013 30 Days of Dead were on DaP9, DaP10, or Spring 1990 Too. I'm thinking the answer to DaP11 or DaP12 is in there.
We will know soon enough. Looking forward to Thursday night!
Way to go! I don't think we will be disappointed!
How 'bout 'dem Dawgs?! And, to hbob....we pre-ordered the set!
Note that when the Mountain Girl tape stash was processed, Dave immediately put out the unusual and fun April 18, 1970 -- being that the band went acoustic and 1970 tapes (in the vault) are said to be somewhat rare. Then 12-12-69 (and the monster 12-11-69 bonus disc). With the year's Big Box being 1990, I'd intuit that the pendulum will swing back to the foggy mysteries of rare tape land. Perhaps even something previously unknown. I'm sure Dave takes justifiable pride in his fine work on all these releases, but his name is on the DP series.
Do a cannonball into the deep end of the pool, mon! It's summer and the time is right. After the slick musicianship of 1990 (I'll hand the band that), let's have some more Pigpen grease and raucous rock 'n roll....
From Athens, went to UGA. Been in the Atl. For 14 years. I renovate houses and decided to renovate mine and sell it.. Want to move back to Athens, but worry about finding a buyer for my product. Hopefully I will move back soon
Dawgs fan Samthardman? I actually call Athens GA home.
Three weeks to ship date, and still no word on #11, and this late-Brent era box, plus the stand alone 3/29, makes me think that Dave is still leaning towards a Mountain Girl return for 11 and, as many think 79, 82, 84 or 87 for #12. I highly doubt #11 will be a Brent era release after yesterday's news.
I keep trying to type in my opinion on the scene as I saw it from '85 through '95, but it sounds cheap and trite. I can't do it. I'm not smart or clever enough to put it into proper words. I, like others, kinda checked out after '89, but I saw my fair share of '90, '91, '94 and '95.
Peace, and Dave, please release some Fall 1970......man, that stuff sounds great (but only after we get 9/18/87 with Spectrum filler !!!)
Excellent thought moonwalker! I did not get the subscription and have been checking the site all day because of the 11th day theory. Glad we were tipped off by mattchewy about Da10, as it sold out I think within 24 hours(maybe a tad more). Based on some comments Dave made about the lost tapes in the liner notes in Da6, I had a feeling 12/12/69 was coming down the pipe sometime soon and I have always loved that show. If 11 is indeed Wichita, and I believe it is, this has been a great year of music for this Dead Head. Thank you Dave and all the gang!
As for the bone, I don't think Uga, the Bulldog's mascot, could finish that fat baby off in a week. My bet is an early 80's release for 12. Doesn't seem the sound quality is there for mid 80's.
I do think 2015 will be loaded with goodies!!!
So Brent era fans were thrown a rather large bone with the second 90 box. That should keep them quiet for awhile, right?....doubt it:)
So kind of odd timing on that announcement as we're expecting some DP news. Kind of makes me wonder if all the Wichita talk was true and they'll announce it at the the meet up as it kind of goes in hand with another 72 show. Just a thought.
eBayer....$60 including shipping from a dude in Connecticut. Seems like he has sold a few. Good 'scalper' price. :)
But, scalpers won't make on this. I think this is for collectors only. That's what I meant. As for me? No real emergency. I caught some '90 shows @Nassau, including THE show.
Wow you 90's fans are basking in all your glory today...I'm still waiting for that 73 box...
I have been monitoring the feedback on this release and it is over 80% positive, so I think this will see out fairly quickly. If you don't buy it, I think you will have regrets down the road. It is pricey, but actually the per disc cost is less then the first Spring '90 box.
My take....just intuition. 3/29/90 is what I am grabbing. It's not limited and has the show I want. Well, Hbob, I just pre-ordered. I mean, how could I not? Thanks, for assisting my thought process. ;)
I have DaP 6 and 9. I'm looking for the new Jerry.
SSIA.....probably will be delayed now because box set announcement was yesterday
How about 9/10/91, a companion release. This is the Branford show I want the most! Ok, I can dream can't I? I was fortunate enough to attend the other three and those would all be welcome releases as well of course!
Still haven't broken it to the wife that I preordered the Spring '90 box. :)
That's Awesome!!! - Don't forget the postage too! ;)
>> Will you please make me a copy, I'll send you the cd's!!
Will you please make me a copy, I'll send you the cd's!!
I bet this sales out in a week two at the most
It's time to move along. Thanks for the stand-alone Branford folks! I missed it in person but my pretty discerning buddies were beside themselves after this one. Let's all celebrate the bounty of music and hope for Spring 71 for our next DaP. See you on another board boys and girls!
I was at 3/28/90 also... so this is gonna be really nice to have all the Nassau shows.
Told ya this was coming!
For those of you who don't get the e-mail there's an interview with Branford here:
And an article and an "Estimated Prophet" from the release here:
