Dave's Picks Volume 5: UCLA 11/17/73 CD - SOLD OUT

Dave's Picks Volume 5 is officially SOLD OUT.

"UCLA, basketball, and the Grateful Dead — it all rolls into one. Teamwork, creativity, imagination, electricity, fundamentals, physical fitness, speed and quickness, the fast-break, dexterity, flexibility, footwork, crazy fingers, communication, discipline, the beat, rhythm and pace, offense, sacrifice, structured freelance, soaring through time and space, a dream, vision, and a plan. Never had such a good time." - Bill Walton

If November 1973 is considered one of the best months in Grateful Dead history and 11/17/73 is widely considered one of the best shows of the month - if not the year, then Dave's Picks Volume 5 is sure to score major points as the first quarter of 2013. Dave's Picks Volume 5, or as liner note scribe Bill "Grateful Red" Walton puts it - "a three-CD package of life, love, and hope, with over three hours of glorious music, and a set and song list to dream about," is major heavyweight Dead.

A stunner of a show, the band come out blazing with phenomenal renditions of new material from the recently released Wake of the Flood, unconventional set starters and some of the finest playing of the year. The first set features one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever - widely regarded as one of the Top 3 versions of this song ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set shines the spotlight on the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes (the 2nd of 3 times they did this sequence), with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. To the ears of many, this is a top-25 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.

Mastered from the original analog tapes in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman, with fresh and fabulous cover art by Grateful Dead Comix artist Tim Truman and first-hand insight and wisdom on that very day from UCLA Basketball Center and student Bill Walton, this one is, by all accounts, incredibly satisfying.

A friendly reminder that Dave’s Picks Volume 5, like those that came before it, will sell out and fast. Your best bet is to pre-order it now!

Very nice, but is it just me, or is the construction still a little flimsy? Why can't it be heavy cardboard?

Got mine, delighted in Here Comes Sunshine, tried to play disc 2

to listen to my wonderful 'sandwich', but it wouldn't play.
Like some others who have reported, my Disc 2 is cracked.

Called the hotline and Jeremy said that
they will get back with me on a replacement.
So I hope that will all go smoothly.
If not I will call out the 'big gun' (marye) ;o} for assistance.
I suspect that packaging was the culprit, no bubblewrap
and that Disc 2 is right at the back side of the thin cardboard mailer.
So a little stress and 'pop' went my PITB sandwich ;o{ . Damn...

I am sure that Deadnet will make it good.
I have purchsed here countless times and this is only the second time I have had a problem.
First time I had a defect, that Roadtrips problem was quickly corrected.
I guess I will have to skip to Disc 3 for now.

The Truth is realized in an instant, the Act is practiced step by step.

''Did you order something?''
''Yes, as a matter of fact I have.''

1742/13000 has arrived at its destination, exactly two weeks after shipping. That's a little longer than I had hoped, but at least it's undamaged.

73 Dead

Where to start...or end. I've listened to all of DaP 5 now and it's definitely an amazing Top N show. And it made me explore other 73 Dead as others have recommended. DP 19 Oklahoma with that beautiful wheat cover. DP 28 SLC. And then DP1, Tampa, which I never really "got" before tonight. Really? This was Dick's #1 choice of all the shows in the vault? Well, believe it or not, Dick knew his Dead. Thanks to all for keeping the music and vibe alive.

This Dave's Pick is Awesome!

I saw the Dead at the June 9th and 10th shows at RFK Stadium with the Allman Brothers in 1973. Those were great shows. But this show is off-the-hook! All's you have to do is read the insert by Bill Walton, who was at this show. That guy has been to over 650 Dead shows, and when he says it's a top-25 show, then I believe him! Sound is awesome, and the band was really on fire! 3 hours of incredible music can't be beat! I have every Dick's Picks, every Road Trips, and every Dave's Picks so far, and this is easily one of my favorites! But I have so many great Dead shows, it's really hard to tell what are the best shows anymore, because they're all great! LOL

damaged disc

Sorry to add to the list of whiners, but dave's 5 arrived today and disc1 is all messed up. There's either a hairline crack right across it or there's a thin line of glue right across it that won't wash off. Either way, it won't play.
Quick note, even though I've listened to all of 15 mins of disc 2, the sound is really superb. Better than Dave's 2, which is the only other one I've got and I think that one sounds good, too, and I would also say better than winterland 73 (which is imo the best release ever).

Thanks Mississippi!

I have no problem waiting. Just like everyone else, I am really enjoying Dave's Picks 5. What an incredible show, my God!
And i definitely agree with Mr. Lemieux that this is the best "playing sandwhich" or whatever you want to call it. The the first jam in Playin' is great and the transition throughout the rest of the songs are just impeccable.

Maybe Frank was Wrong....

As stated in the eloquently-put liner notes, I think Frank Zappa was wrong when he said basketball courts were no place for rock concerts. Or maybe it's the 'Dead's way of finding an alternative to the impossible. Either or. Regardless, this here is another beautiful release thanks for Mr. David Lemieux, and it's definitely one of the best in the series thus far. I especially enjoyed the beautiful blend of "Playing in the Band" > Uncle John's Band" > "Morning Dew" > "Uncle John's Band" > "Playing in the Band," which takes up half of the second disc.

And now we sit back and eagerly anticipate Vol. 6 (and the bonus disc for those of us who subscribed)....

THE BEST DAVE'S PICKS SO FAR

My Dave's Picks is taking longer than usual to arrive. This year the subscription did not offer me the chance of choosing the UPS service (only God knows why), and I live in Argentina, so go figure.
I hardly ever download Dead music from the Internet, for I own almost every release I'm interested in (ALMOST, for I don't have the Fillmore West 1969 box set, and I missed a couple of Dick's Picks), but this time I couldn't wait for the mailman to ring my doorbell, so I downloaded Dave's Picks 5 before actually having it. I just HAD to check whether the sound was really pristine or not, if it really sounded better than my beloved Winterland 73 box set.
Well, it DOES sound better than the aforementioned release, and that's saying something! I am not saying it sounds a lot better, but enough to tell the difference. It is simply amazing the way those old 2-track tapes sound 40 years later. Mr. Norman did it again. And of course, Candelario had done it before at the time this was recorded. The instrument separation is well thought, everything sounds clear and balanced, and the mix does justice to every member in the band. I have to say, though, that the best 1973 drum live sound is featured on Dick's Picks 28. On this new release they sound on the centre, on a mono track (the same applies to the Winterland set, Dick's Picks 1 and 14, and maybe I am forgetting others), while on Dick's Picks 28 Bill's kit sounds on stereo, which is something I love.
Regarding the performance itself, I didn't have enough time to listen to the whole show, but the band seems to be really on, tight and loose at the same time, creative with its natural Dead flow. While I'm writing, the legendary PITB>UJB>MD>UJB>PITB suite is sounding, and the segues are FLAWLESS, really amazing, better than the Winterland 73 version (which is certainly great, anyway).
I am really waiting for the postman to ring that bleeding bell!

Garcia Live Vol. 1

Garcia Live Vol. 1 arrived in my box today. Was it worth the three month wait? Maybe. It's got the exact same sound/performance quality as the After Midnight 2/28/80 release (GL Vol. 1 is 3/1/80). I wish they would have put something out from Jan - March 1981 as this is supposed to be an epic run. Oh well, any JGB show with Ozzie Ahlers on keys and synth is good with me! Speaking of, the keys are a little low in the mix, but Garcia is wayyyy out front in a good way. The still-young Tiger sounds incredible. The whole set might be worth it just for the Midnight Moonlight.

12064/13K. Everything looks good - - glad it survived the corrogated envelope treatment (prob. a crush risk if you ask me). Haven't been able to go too in depth or read the liner notes yet, but of the 5 releases thus far the art it a vast improvement over the last 4 releases (previous 4 were a little hokey imo). YMMV.

Thank you

Just wanted to say thank you to Dave and Co. for all the great work on DP5. This sound quality/mix is a dream - clear separation, no one is lost, the symbols are tamed in a way that fits with the flow-y playing, and Jerry's guitar is syrupy sweet. Beautiful playing. I can't stop listening to it.

I signed up for the subscription because of my experience with the Spring 1990 box. Took me a few listens, but eventually it completely converted me on Brent, which has opened up half the Dead's catalog for me. I may never have appreciated the 80s and 90s without it. So I figured I'd sign up to get the benefit of your expertise and Mr. Norman's ears. Please keep up the good work and keep on releasing the shows you feel really deserve it. Looking forward to more, and in the meantime, I'm going to have fun sampling everyone's suggestions.

Also, not sure if this is in the vault, but if it is, you ever do get around to it, it'd be nice to see a multi-track 11/24/78 (or something similar) - great show, neat energy, and I like hearing Donna have a stand out night.

Future Dave's Picks....

....Remember,last year all the DaP's came from 30 days in one form or another. 4/21/78,Lexington,KY is on 30 Days...maybe?... If Dave does venture into the 80's I think it would be an early 80's release. I got Vol 5 on Friday,on my 3rd listen and it is awesome! Mr. Lemieux has my full trust on whatever he picks and I dont care what year it is, I love them all!!! I questioned some of the choices but when I heard them I was like WOW, this IS good! Thats all for now, take care folks!!!! ;)

2. Something from Spring '79
3. Normal, IL '78

worth the wait

I got the DP5 and Jerry live yesterday. I spent the evening digging into both of them. The Jerry discs have stunning sound-mixed from 24 track recordings, very good package design and artwork, great notes from David Gans and terrific playing-all in all a home run for the maiden voyage of this new series. Lets hope they keep on coming. Just started disc one of DP5-so far really getting into it. I agree that the recorded sound is probably the best of this series so far and the playing-well puts ya right back in Deadland! nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...

man, still waiting here for DaP5. my tracking says it went to OH, and now it's in Kansas City. This is awesome because i live in Illinois. Huh?!?! I'm sure it will be here soon since it shippped out on the 30th. gotta love the USPS. it never ever makes any sense.

Anyway, been listening to that Garcia Live v1 while i'm waiting upon my DaP5 arrival. been very attached to this version of sitting in limbo. smooth jerry playing all throughout. packaging looks really nice as well. it has a similar feel to the road trips series only you have no problem getting the cds out.

hopefully, Dave can start venturing into some crazy jerry projects. we kinda need a little more diversity with the releases in my opinion. we already had a release similar to this one already as kean college was from a couple days earlier. one of the first jerry tapes i ever had was the hempstead show from 2-28-80. so, i've been kinda familiar with this era for awhile now. i'm not sure what's in the jerry vault, but hopefully there's some earlier stuff that hasn't been hit on yet. nobody ever really talks what's in there. one show to note that's one of my favorites is the Keystone Berkeley 9-1-72 show, which would be a nice little realm to touch base on ;P expresswayyyyyyyyyyyyy the 72 stuff with merle is really good!

Pleased all around

It was a good mail day in NH, with DaP 5 and Garcia Live both arriving. This is my favorite Dave's Pick to date, performance and sound-wise. I'm only into the beginning of disc two, but the band is playing at a very high level and the mix is amazing--front and center. I sometimes second guess all of the money I put into my Dead collection considering that I download some quality soundboards from Etree, but this release confirms for me that it is money well-spent. Jeffrey Norman makes these things sound REALLY nice. I would also like to say that the layout of all of the Dave's Picks is really top notch. In addition to the always impressive liner notes (I find Walton's essay fun, although I still think that Blair brings more to the table), I like the photos of logistical notes and the press clipping about Wake of the Flood behind disc two. These things bring life to an archival release and put it into context. Unlike others, I have never had any issues with Dead.net releases and have always been a happy customer. Now, when is my other favorite line of "bootleg" releases going to put out another offering?! Yes, Columbia/Bob Dylan, I'm talking to you.

I'm a subscriber but haven't received DaP5 yet, looked up my tracking number and found that it arrived at my local post office today. Just want to say that this is a HUGE improvement as far as communication goes. I know some people don't like the complaints that pop up here but (for the most part) those complaints, at least the ones about customer service, are made in the hope that there will be some improvement. Now we have working tracking numbers for our purchase. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
Very excited about this release...my favorite year for GD 1973. Hopefully we get at least one more from 73/74 this year.

All is Good

My DP Vol 5 arrived today, no damage but poor packaging this time, no bubble wrap or anything to protect the Disks, I count myself one of the lucky ones, good karma can go a long way. Great sound as well, I’ll have to compare it to the Winterland Box set and RT Denver show, but what I’ve heard sounds really great. I liked the liner notes, Bill lived in the turmoil of the early 70’s, ( I was a freshman in high school in ’73, much more insulated), so you can understand some of the snipes towards “The Man”. All is good, can’t wait for the next release, one last comment; can the nastyness (PatagonianFox) end?

I'm listening to CD1 of DP5, the mail dude just laid it on me. The sound quality is really amazing for a 73 recording. I'm so glad they had the foresight to tape their shows. I'm really digging this, Jerry's playing is beautiful. I'm hoping my Garcialive Vol.1 will arrive tomorrow. This show is a sure bet. As for the guy slamming Deadheads on this site, please simply disappear man. We don't need your negative vibes.

Got my DaP5 on Saturday and will certainly echo some of the other comments here. It's purely amazing. The 2nd disc is sublime. Amazing sound quality, mix, etc. Loved the packaging and the liner notes were fine. I didn't love them, but they were certainly entertaining. Didn't have a problem with the packaging or anything like that. I thought all of that was just fine.

Re: the Garcia Vol. 1. I was able to get the Sugaree download they sent out over the Christmas holiday. Not sure why others didn't, but it was just a straight up download for me. Sounds really good. Also I emailed the site about getting some of the archival stuff re-released and it sounds like there IS a plan to do just that. It make take 2-3 years before they get to everything but it sounded like they were aware of the issues and were looking to address them, e.g. Legion of Mary, Pure Jerry series, etc. In my opinion they're taking the time to do things right. Perhaps they could be a bit more transparent to the broader community, but it seems that their heads are in the right place. Hopefully they can deliver on those great ideas!

@folkhippy

yeah, I was upset at the delay with releasing the first Jerry live disc-first they blamed it on the artwork and they went from nov. release date to a Feb date-but I decided to let it go and bear with it. I think they def. should get more active with the website communication though and allow real email messages without the draconian buffer which is on there right now-I def thought I could get paranoid about their legitimacy at some point during "the long wait" after being charged up front but maybe it was the roses and i let it go. Lets hope they "get it" soon about professionalism. I really enjoy the Jerry stuff-I have all of them and I would like them to succeed or fail on the merits-not on the incompetence of the delivery system. I hope they are listening to the fans.

folkhippy you still don't get it.

there is a difference between liking the grateful dead, and turning a decent band into some fake-ass religion. i don't care about deadhead culture. i don't like most deadheads. i see them as phony. they don't treat people well, because its the right thing to do. they're driven by some lame cosmic idea that if they act a certain way they'll be rewarded with kine bud & phish tickets. i saw 40 shows, but the day jerry died i moved on. i realized it was over. some of you act like a high school jock who still can't stop talking about the big game.

...and for the person who will no longer engage me; i wish you could read some of the stuff i've written. i've made plenty of positive comments, but when i do nobody says a thing, but if i complain, or say something negative people go apeshit.

Garcia Live

While I wait for DaP 5, I'll comment on the Garcia Live complaints. I was a little disappointed at the delays as well (I preordered in Oct.), but then I decided to cut Garcia's daughters some slack. They're just figuring out the business, after all. Their biggest mistake was in announcing the release WAY before it even went into production. Hopefully they'll figure things out for the next release.. Here's hoping that the music will be worth the wait.

Re: sfanton--You can get it!

Your statement about patience and eBay will be your friend is SOOOO true, I can agree 100% - for me the combination of that virtue and website have got me: a used UK copy of the Rhino American Beauty CD, Phil Manzanera/801 Live (can't find that one in the USA on CD). a double CD release of Poco's Crazy Eyes with Deliverin' on BGO label for $10 American, Roy Harper CD's on his Science Friction label, new or used for reasonable prices......all legit releases, NOT boots or gray market. AND used Road Trips releases. It's all there. Take your time. Don't be in a hurry. Do what I do. Pour another California Cabernet and relax, you're not going anywhere. You can't drive while ordering on your iphone app anyway. Just listen to the music the music play, and Roll Away The Dew.......

Dave's Picks Vol. 5 UCLA - One Of The Very Best of Da Bunch!

Received my Dave's Picks Vol. 5 UCLA Nov '73 yesterday. OMG this has got to be one of the very best of the Dave's/Dick's releases! The clarity of the recording, lots of fat bottom in the sound with Phil's bass and Billy the K's drums LOCKED IN. And the performance? Now I know why this show is on lots of top 30 lists. Even Keith's piano playing is inspiring throughout. I'm SO glad I got my yearly subscription in early.
BTW,
The packaging should have a little more padding. I can see these being dinged up and possible damage to a disc if it's going through some of the rough-and-tumble postal annexes we have in this here US of A. Fortunately my copy was OK with a few edge creases but the discs were not cracked. And I was amazed how fast this sold out after the subscribers got their copies. It was available for non-subscribers for barely a week! Lucky me.

THANKS RainDead

I really appreciate the tip. I will never order from Music Today again. I'm just thrilled that we are going to be getting more JGB releases again. Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile.
