Dave's Picks 2013 Subscription

This subscription will end at 11:59pm PST on 1/22/13.

Last year's Dave's Picks succeeded far beyond our own expectations and became a true fan favorite, with each volume selling out in a matter of weeks. Now's your chance to become a Dave's Picks 2013 subscriber. Not only are you guaranteed all four releases for 2013, you get free domestic shipping plus the ultra-happenin' Subscribers-Only Bonus Disc that will be mailed with one of Lemieux's choices - in 2012, the Bonus Disc, sent out with Dave's Picks, Volume 2 was a fantastic collection of tracks from the July 29, 1974 show at the Cap Centre in Landover, Maryland. All Dave's Picks releases are mastered from the original tapes by Jeffrey Norman and include an informative and fun booklet containing notes about the show and archival photos. The good news is that an extra thousand copies of each release will be pressed to accommodate the heavy demand. The 2013 Dave's Picks releases will be numbered and limited to 13,000 units each. Dave is promising some great things for 2013 - so don't be left out!

Hey now. For those of you who prefer print to video or who are just tired of seeing me babble away beside the water (likely the latter...), we figured we'd write a few words about Dave's Picks 5, and what's ahead. The long and short of it is that if you're inclined to pick up Dave's Picks 5 and/or the 2013 subscription, you're in a for a huge treat. The first show, 11/17/73 at UCLA, is a major, heavyweight Grateful Dead show, one of the best of any year, and being top-of-the-heap from the 1973, that's saying a lot. It's one of these shows that every time I've heard it in the past decade+, I've wondered why it's not been released. I almost feel a need to apologize for taking so long -- 40 years! This is really prime Dead. First set material worth noting is one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set features the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes, with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. I say this without hyperbole, but to my ears and many others, this is a top-40 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.

We don't have much planned beyond DP 5, but I've previously hinted about a major batch of 1969 and 1970 tapes that were recently returned, and we hope/expect to get some of that out in 2013. I'm not trying to be coy or cryptic on the contents and possibilities, but we're in the midst of backing these tapes up and sorting through them. Once this is complete, we'll know what we have. What we've heard so far has shocked us in its excellence in terms of performance quality, song list, and sound quality. So, if you like peak-era Grateful Dead, with huge versions of major songs that you (and we!) have never heard before, this lost-batch of tapes is for you. Expect news on that within a few months.

- David Lemieux

Unveiling Dave's Picks Volume 6

We're really bad at keeping secrets around here so just imagine how hard it's been for us to contain our excitement about the 2 now complete shows, once missing reels for more than 40 years, that have been selected to make up Dave's Picks Volume 6. The first major return of material to the vault since 2005's Houseboat Tapes, Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature 2 complete shows with never-before-heard material from 2/2/70 Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO and 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Long a mystery, the riddle of the 2/2/70 set list has now been solved and the music restored to its proper - and spectacular - sequence. 2/2/70 is also notable as the first show without Tom Constanten. Tom, however, makes his return to give his first-hand perspective on 12/20/69 in this volume's liner notes. Pigpen fiends, ask and you shall receive. Both shows feature loads of Pigpen including a major 35+ minute "Lovelight" from 12/20/69. Recorded by Bear with an excellent mix and sound quality, this very special release feels like a return to the classics.

If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring 75 minutes of music (almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard), includes one of only three versions of "Smokestack Lightning" from 1969. You most certainly won't want to miss out on this highly collectible Dead!

The only way to guarantee you'll get these historic releases is to get a Dave's Picks 2013 subscription. The subscription offer ends January 22, 2013 at 11:59PM PST, so grab one while you can!

Late Orders

mustin321/all - I don't understand why it takes so long to ship items that are supposedly in stock, but 4 months is insane. I have no idea who is running the GD ordering facility, but they are worthless who don't have a clue what is going on (other than stating that they have plenty of the items I ordered in stock) I used to be get orders faster back in the 1970's when I get a newsletter/paper from the GD, fill out the order form, sent it back in, and GD would fill the order quickly and sent it back. Whoever is running the show now was quick to take my money, but that's about it. Man, if you can't trust the GD - who can you trust?

Much props to Monsieur Lemieux and everyone else involved!! As good as Dave's Pick's was in 2012, 2013 is going to be even better!!!!

Otter,
The complete track list for 2-02-70 is still a surprise ~ maybe (hopefully) not to be revealed till pre-orders for Dave's 6. What's known of that setlist, and the one for 12-20-69, is posted a few messages below.

Re-read the liner notes for Two From the Vault last night. Would be nice, I think, if they reprinted that Harper Barnes article on a page of the Dave's 6 booklet.....it being an eyewitness account of 2-02-70, and all.....

Looking forward to the 12-20-69 New Speedway, too, if it's more like my (incomplete) 12-26-69 version, which is markedly different from the '70 Workingman's-style versions. Snakier, more tango-ey, organ, lots more background vocals.....

nothing on the internet ever goes away

Do a Google Images search for "dave's picks subscription 2013 cover art truman" without the quotes and you will find it. It's a picture of a skeleton with Uncle Sam top hat playing acoustic guitar for a large (and rather human-looking) black bear.

When the first person mentioned it earlier I went digging around the Scott McDougall and Wes Lang sites and found nothing. I couldn't remember the name Timothy Truman for the life of me. He also did the cover art for the NYE 76/77 Cow Palace release (among many other things), which was also leaked via the artist's website.

cover art - where?

Moses or someone, can you please help? I went to Tim Truman's site (totally cool choice - I like his style!) but can't find the DP5 cover there. I have tried numerous searches, including Google images. When I tried to duplicate Moses' search, "Dave's Picks 5 cover art" in Google, I got this result, somewhat hilariously it brought me to THIS discussion board. AAAARGH:

Ulterior motive

Being old and cynical, I suspect the reason that they announced the details for DP6 and particularly the (subscription only) Bonus disc so early is to try and sell a few more subscriptions before the January 22 deadline. Of course this is a perfectly legitimate marketing ploy that doesn't bother me at all. I got my subscription long ago at the discount price. I am happy to get the info. on DP6 and the Bonus disc so early. Does anybody know if there is a rendition of "Hard to handle" anywhere in these shows?

According to Dave's description, it looks like the bonus disc will include the 12-21 show opening 'Smokestack'.
It also looks like a sweet 2nd set, with quite an unorthodox lineup of tunes for a second set (of course, it is late '69).
This release is destined to be great. By the way, kudos to dead.net for divulging the details early!

this seems self explanatory:

RE: the bonus disk

Can't wait!!!

11/17/73 is an amazing show and I'm extremely excited to hear it in all it's remastered glory. When I heard that was the choice for DP 5 I couldn't stop smiling. But now just finding out about DP 6!!!! WOW....Dave is really coming through! I'm so pumped for these two releases to arrive at my house and can only hope that DP 7 and 8 follow suit. I'm a little curious to how they will fit 12/20/69 and 2/2/70 on 3 discs?? I'm definitely a completist and am really hoping they include both complete shows. Perhaps a 4 disc release? Of course I'm not complaining, I'm extremely happy to be receiving any music from these two dates...but boy do I hope they use both complete shows...especially if they have all the vault tapes now. Either way, I'm so excited for these two installments of DP to be released. Thank you Dave for your excellent choices. I've said it before and I'll say it again...we are truly the luckiest fans in the world. Thank you Grateful Dead for keeping a constant smile on my face no matter what life brings.

By the way, anyone in Chicago make sure to come to The Vic on February 2nd...Dark Star Orchestra will be there and it's going to be a fabulous night :)

Kevjones,
You are clearly in the majority, if a ’84 show is released, then don’t buy, it simple as that. Many of us are into the subscription from the beginning, trusting that we will enjoy the releases, which I have to date and look forward to anything Dave selects.

Another fascinating article about the circumstances that led to Bob Heil running the sound system at the Fox on 2/2/70. http://www.performing-musician.com/pm/dec08/articles/bobheil.htm

Great stuff, the tape I have has 54 seconds of Cumberland, Dark Star. St. Stephens> Mason’s Children/Cut and it sounds amazing and I am eagerly awaiting my disks. Glad I subscribed again this year, now for DP 7 & 8, give in and go with some early 80’s. ’81 or ’84 would be cool.

This looks to be shaping up nicely for 2013, thanks Dave & Co. DaP-Vol-05 11/17/73, always welcome is a hot 1973 fall show. Now for DaP-Vol-06 & bonus CD newly found late'69 & early'70 shows. Man, what's not to like. I think Dave will be pleasantly surprising us for Vols 07 & 08 too. (~):E

dp5 cover art, etc.

Pretty sure that we'll see the cover art for Dave's Picks 5 when the set is available for sale individually. This page is about the subscription and enticing us to go for that. The nuggets about Vols 5 and 6 should make it a no-brainer!

After the subscription period closes on Jan 22 they will know how many individual sets are available for purchase. So look for an announcement about that possibly on Jan 23 since Vol 5 starts shipping on Feb 1.

Good questions on the Dave's Picks 6 content since we see the words "complete show" and "unreleased material" in there. Shows of early 1970 aren't terribly long, so 2/2/70 should fit on 2 discs with room to spare. The 12/20/69 and 12/21/69 shows probably run 80-100 minutes each, so I imagine 12/20/69 will fit with 2/2/70 on 3 discs.

The only other question is about 12/21/69...seems like it would be too long by a song or three to fit on one disc. I bet material that is repeated from the previous night will be omitted.

Could not agree more with you johnlo. There has been exactly one, ONE, live song from 1984 officially released: the 12-31-84 Shakedown on SMR. I am pretty certain that is it. I understand the problems with the vault recordings for that year, as well as the predisposition against this year due to Jerry's state of being and appearance, but the asthetics of the man do not equate with crappy music. Unfortunately the 83-84 years would have been ideal for the original Road Trips format of snippets from tours and multiple shows, but the completist mob bullied that format away. Hopefully some day we get a 1984 show -- anything from April East Coast (particualrly Philly, Hampton and Provy) would work fine.

Things are this way: I love 1965-1978 Dead, (especially 1968-1977). I bought my subscription last year and got lucky: every release was from a Dead era I liked. I bought this year subscription too, and I'm really happy to know that at least half of it will keep me satisfied. I also understand that some fans are eager to see a 80's release, and that surely some 2013 Dave's Picks volume is not going to suit my sonic appetites. That's why I don't like this limited edition/bonus-disc-for-subscriptors-only policy. Anyway, regarding Dead releases, I will be lucky for sure half of the year.
Will there be a box set this year? My pocket says "I hope it is post-1978 one!", but my heart and soul cry for a golden era mega-release.

PS: what about some studio rarities/outtakes release one of these days? Or the original Aoxomoxoa mix on CD, maybe coupled with the 1971 mix of "Anthem Of The Sun"?

Complete 2/2/70? and why I LOVE this band

@jvanderveen I was curious about the amount of music when I first heard as well. seems like a lot of material for 3 discs. I'm rather completely satisfied with this release though. I can't wait to hear 2/2/70 in its entirety, if it is going to be the full show. I've been hoping for a Fox Theatre release. For someone who has been to this theatre know's what I'm talking about cause this theatre is crazy cool. unfortunately, i didn't get to see the dead there, but any show in that room has a majestic feel.

From what I've read I believe Bill Graham almost purchased the Fox at one point in the early 70's, since it was practically their midwest home. You can hear Phil's enthusiasm about the venue at the beginning of the 12/9/71 show. hoping some day that show will a proper release too.

Cheers to primal Dead!!!!!!!!

sigh

Alright, you got me.......I crumbled and subscribed. Can't miss out on December '69!! Always love Smokestack ~ wonder if we'll get a Mason's Children?

Two complete shows does seem like alot of music for three discs ~ but as I recall (and granted, my short-term memory isn't what it used to be), a Dave's subscription was 12 discs a year (+ bonus), which could be released in any combination of three-discers, four-discers, and two-discers. So maybe Dave's 6 will be 4 discs, and one of the latter-half releases will be two-disc only.....Landover 12 Sept 87? Perfect! Fits snugly onto two discs, and a Dew for the ages....

Even three discs will be sumptiously filled, no doubt, if that's what Dave's 6 comprises. There was no promise of ALL complete shows as I also tentatively recall, so I sure hope there's no uproar of bellies if it IS a comp. It'll be however many discs of prime music, to be sure.....
