Dave's Picks 2013 Subscription
This subscription will end at 11:59pm PST on 1/22/13.
Last year's Dave's Picks succeeded far beyond our own expectations and became a true fan favorite, with each volume selling out in a matter of weeks. Now's your chance to become a Dave's Picks 2013 subscriber. Not only are you guaranteed all four releases for 2013, you get free domestic shipping plus the ultra-happenin' Subscribers-Only Bonus Disc that will be mailed with one of Lemieux's choices - in 2012, the Bonus Disc, sent out with Dave's Picks, Volume 2 was a fantastic collection of tracks from the July 29, 1974 show at the Cap Centre in Landover, Maryland. All Dave's Picks releases are mastered from the original tapes by Jeffrey Norman and include an informative and fun booklet containing notes about the show and archival photos. The good news is that an extra thousand copies of each release will be pressed to accommodate the heavy demand. The 2013 Dave's Picks releases will be numbered and limited to 13,000 units each. Dave is promising some great things for 2013 - so don't be left out!
Hey now. For those of you who prefer print to video or who are just tired of seeing me babble away beside the water (likely the latter...), we figured we'd write a few words about Dave's Picks 5, and what's ahead. The long and short of it is that if you're inclined to pick up Dave's Picks 5 and/or the 2013 subscription, you're in a for a huge treat. The first show, 11/17/73 at UCLA, is a major, heavyweight Grateful Dead show, one of the best of any year, and being top-of-the-heap from the 1973, that's saying a lot. It's one of these shows that every time I've heard it in the past decade+, I've wondered why it's not been released. I almost feel a need to apologize for taking so long -- 40 years! This is really prime Dead. First set material worth noting is one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set features the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes, with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. I say this without hyperbole, but to my ears and many others, this is a top-40 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.
We don't have much planned beyond DP 5, but I've previously hinted about a major batch of 1969 and 1970 tapes that were recently returned, and we hope/expect to get some of that out in 2013. I'm not trying to be coy or cryptic on the contents and possibilities, but we're in the midst of backing these tapes up and sorting through them. Once this is complete, we'll know what we have. What we've heard so far has shocked us in its excellence in terms of performance quality, song list, and sound quality. So, if you like peak-era Grateful Dead, with huge versions of major songs that you (and we!) have never heard before, this lost-batch of tapes is for you. Expect news on that within a few months.
- David Lemieux
Unveiling Dave's Picks Volume 6
We're really bad at keeping secrets around here so just imagine how hard it's been for us to contain our excitement about the 2 now complete shows, once missing reels for more than 40 years, that have been selected to make up Dave's Picks Volume 6. The first major return of material to the vault since 2005's Houseboat Tapes, Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature 2 complete shows with never-before-heard material from 2/2/70 Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO and 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Long a mystery, the riddle of the 2/2/70 set list has now been solved and the music restored to its proper - and spectacular - sequence. 2/2/70 is also notable as the first show without Tom Constanten. Tom, however, makes his return to give his first-hand perspective on 12/20/69 in this volume's liner notes. Pigpen fiends, ask and you shall receive. Both shows feature loads of Pigpen including a major 35+ minute "Lovelight" from 12/20/69. Recorded by Bear with an excellent mix and sound quality, this very special release feels like a return to the classics.
If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring 75 minutes of music (almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard), includes one of only three versions of "Smokestack Lightning" from 1969. You most certainly won't want to miss out on this highly collectible Dead!
The only way to guarantee you'll get these historic releases is to get a Dave's Picks 2013 subscription. The subscription offer ends January 22, 2013 at 11:59PM PST, so grab one while you can!

Some eras ARE -- arguably -- "over-represented"
There are a lot of reasons why.
Just one is that one archivist after another thinks they're where some of the very best shows are. It's not just a Dave thing!
But.
In the first five so-called "Dave's Picks" there will now be one for Fall 1973. That's really not much evidence that he can't get out of his obsession with one season of one year -- I think that's a claim that just goes too far.
In all 36 of the Dick's Picks, there were 3 from that season.
From the entire Road Trips series, there was one release (and a bonus disc) from that season.
In all of the last 20 years of vault release programs, there has been exactly one box set from Fall 1973.
Of 13 Download series releases, just one was from that season.
This really is not the stuff from which a good case can be built that everything else is being ignored!
Other things. There are a lot of missing tapes in the vault from periods that haven't seen much released. There are a lot of tapes that just don't sound very good from some periods (unless that's just a conspiratorial claim/excuse that's being used to not release them!). There are some eras/seasons where the playing was really just not so lovely as others. Just because a show has something "different" doesn't mean it's a very distinguished show. I anticipate that lots of unique and different stuff will never get released, because "different" though it may be -- some of it just ain't that great!
Of all the eras that might be considered the province of a supposed "exclusive club-within-a-club," 1990 ain't it. And yet, the single most lavish production yet from GDM has just gone into a mammoth 1990 box set.
That supposed club just doesn't exist.
We are getting a good variety.
I have renewed my subscription.
good show for sure,
but like antonjo I would also prefer more variety in the show selection, means not so many from may 1977 or fall 1973;
please Dave please!
Just ordered yee haww. Now though I have a little disagreement with Temica with customer care. I didn't see anything on the website about the 48 states. It says Domestic and Alaska is quite domestic. AAARGGHHH

Sorry, Dave you've lost me on this one. We all know this is your favorite month in Dead history, but you've got to be kidding.
Here's what's already been released from this fabled window out of a 30-year career:
10/19, 11/09, 11/10, 11/11, 11/21, 12/10 ~ all complete shows. 11/30, 12/02, 12/19 (majority of the shows, two discs each). Plus substantial portions of 11/20 (40 minutes), 12/04 (one full disc/ 77 minutes), 12/06 (one full disc/ 78-minutes). 11/21 was just released last year ~ and opens with "Me and My Uncle." And features a Playing sandwich as its main jam (which culminates in Morning Dew).
I've purchased all of the above save 10/19 & 12/10, lest anyone think I've got an aversion to this tour. But, really? 11/17/73 is your next Pick? We've had a single '73 release prior to October (the stellar Dick's 28 from February). If you're going for Fall (again), how about one of the shows with the horn section, and "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away"? Something truly unique and different?
No, David must continue his advocacy for his almighty favorite month. Man, no one will deny how great each of the shows probably was. But can we get some variety in the releases? Different seasons even within the same year yield different places the band was going at that time, different riffs Jerry was hitting ~ it's just not as interesting to keep hearing the same territories, however different each night's exploration. Not when there are so many others that have barely been touched. Yes, November '73 was filled with gold! How about some more of the emeralds from February? The sapphires from Spring?
The many cries for mid-80's still go unheard, yet you and Blair continue to pay lip service to the idea that all eras are great, and all will be represented in releases. Sorry, your words are hollow.
The sad thing is, I'm so excited about the '69 & '70 trove that I'm tempted to subscribe just in case the bonus disc is culled from that. But I just can't bring myself to do it. No. I'm NOT buying another November '73 at this time. I will not subscribe.
Here's an idea ~ why don't you just release every remaining show from Nov-Dec '73, May '77, and 1972 in a revolving sequence......and only then parcel out all the other tours & years. And be sure to continue excluding '84-'87 (the entire years) till the '80's heads are retired ~ we can have something to look forward to then. As of now, we count for absolutely nothing.
Sorry for the rant, but I'm a long-supporting, much $$$-spending customer, and I'm disillusioned. The choices, and their full-show-or-nothing stipulation, feel tailored to an exclusive club-within-a-club that I'm not a member of.....nor wish to be, really. Maybe there should be more than one archivist. (And, no, I'm not nominating myself.)
looking forward to hearing these shows placed my order on the 25th of october. makes sense to pre-order
lo
Hey Downtownbear -totally agree on Fall '72, but 11/19/72 is not in the Vault.... They do have the four shows which precede that date (11/14,15,17,18), lots of good stuff...
Another great choice of a show from my favorite year of 73'. Got my subscription today. Can't wait for the another great year of releases from Dave's Picks. I'm hoping that in the near future we get to have a 4/2/73 boston garden release too. This is probably one of the most underrated shows of 73' that hasn't been released yet. The soundboard copy that i have is sounds phenomenal. I'm sure the soundboard masters in the vault would sound superb with a touch of Jeffery's magic in HDCD.

Thanks for releasing 11/17/73!
Wow, this sounds great! I renewed today and I"m just re-looking over my 2012 Dave's Picks. I must say last year this time I was hesitant to subscribe as I liked to be able to pick and choose with the Road Trips and Dicks Picks, but all four from the 70's!! And all killer shows!!! Thanks so much for such an excellent selection. So there's no way I"m missing 11/17/73 and something from 69/70!!! I'd like to see more from these eras - real bluesy stuff pre-69 and, though I realize we just had the whole Europe tour (I"m still working through my steamer trunk), I would like to see some more shows from the Fall of '72: 11/19, the Waterbury shows, and, of course one of these days, 8/27. But 2012....great music, great packaging. A treat for every season. Thanks.

Why would anyone order from Spin when all they do is take your order at double the price and then order from dead.net like everyone else? They're no faster at getting these releases than anyone else and I'd say they're not really an official distributor. But saying that if you have missed the boat on some releases they may still have stock of them and the same goes for Dancing Bear which can be sometimes be useful.
I had no problem with my order. As soon as I chose Sweden as my destination, the postage changed to about 11 dollars. I asume that is correct. About 110 dollars was then reserved on my bank-account. Do I have to worry about the sum that will finally be drawn from my account?
I made the order around midnight October 25, local Swedish time.

The store normally does accept PayPal, and it clearly states in red bold type in several locations on the cart and checkout pages that this item does not accept PayPal.
I don't think paypal does preorders. I did the same thing (maybe from the same chair) with the pre order on the RSD release
Just signed up. Experienced none of the problems expressed, here very smooth procees. Can I echo other comments about the shipping rates to UK. You have listened! Thank you.
No International shipping option - to me that means it will be posted out as normal USPS parcel, will take about 6 weeks, and we will then have to pay customs/VAT etc.
Sorry, but I was hoping they had sorted this - I decided to go with the (more expensive but reliable) Spin option for DaP 2013.
Superb.♡♡♡♡♡♡♡Thanks!!!
I ordered my 2013 subscription yesterday. When I want to check out, I saw the Paypal icon, this is good I thought. Now I will not have to walk downstairs to get my wallet. There was no way to use Paypal at all, I looked for a few minutes thinking I was just overlooking it. Never found it, so I peeled myself from my recliner to get my credit card to complete my order.
I sent a message to the help e-mail listed below. I received a response today. Paraphrase: "We don't take Paypal for pre-orders." Strange I thought, since they were advertising that they take Paypal. Anyway, looking forward to DP5.
Peace.
Thanks for doing the research on what they might have recovered from the early '70 tapes. It adds nicely to the anticipation of the impending reveal of the details. I'm excited to hear these tapes post haste!
Great way to entice us to subscribe. I'll do so in a moment. I've enjoyed the first three volumes. #1 and #2 seem to have copped a bit of criticism but, if any of them are a bit disappointing, for me it's #3. An average show but with an oustanding TIFTOO. I think they got much better a week or two later (DP2) and by November were really firing up (RT3.2).
Anyway, as for the early '70 stuff that has returned, anyone got any theories? Most of what I would call early '70 is available in SBD already. What isn't on the LMA from that time and into what I would call early mid '70 is:
- Full Fox Theatre show 2 February
- 3 Texas shows from February
- Buffalo 17 March
- 3 of the 4 Capitol Theatre shows in March
- Full tapes of middle 2 Fillmore West shows in April
- 3 Family Dog shows from April
- Mammoth Gardens and Poynette shows from the end of April
Heaven forbid that Mammoth Gardens or Poynette should turn up...sunset raga anyone? If any of this stuff I've listed appeared, it would be outrageously good. Capitol Theatre in clean SBD??? Full Fillmore West??? How about the Buffalo show with the orchestra??
I haven't attempted to figure out all of what's missing from late '69 but the main chunk of missing tapes appears to be from September and October. How about Fillmore East September?????
Good Lord dead net, stop being so cheap. I add the sub to my cart, click Checkout, and get a screen that says "Your Cart is Empty." I want to give you $100, you won't take it. This is what you get when you cheap out on your IT and offshore it to a country where no one has even heard of the Grateful Dead. Brother, what a completely avoidable mess, and for a few extra bucks.
please PM me the details if the situation hasn't been resolved.
I love 73 so much!!! I'm so happy with this release!!!!! This is going to be great!
Already subscribed... I have a very nice sounding copy of 11/17/73 but hey, this will kick its butt I'm sure. And of course the return of missing tapes from 1969-70 has me real perked up (Dave says on the video that they are from "late '69 and early '70" for the most part, sounds like the mid-late '70 thing ain't happenin'....)
Dave - please PLEASE don't let the lack of a complete show from an era preclude a release - I think even the Completautarchs won't mind the occasional complilation :)
I noticed they upped the number to 13,000 per release... seems like a wise move (lucky 13!)
marye! need your help so bad, please!
do want to order the new subscription, but every time they are telling me: "Transaction could not be completed.
Please try another card and/or make sure all billing and credit card information is correct."
But my information sure is correct. Don´t know what to do. So some one please help me.
Thank you.
Check your messages

Your seaside chats just keep getting better and better! Thank you for sharing the way you do.

I have been working my way backwards in purchasing a lot of the previously released box sets, dick's picks & Road Trip releases over the last 2 years. Suddenly last summer the old store completely disappeared & you could not purchase titles other than Spring 90 stuff. Now with the new store (which suddenly charges NY tax) almost all the Road Trips that were always in stock previously are listed but all sold out. Where exactly did the inventory go? I want to buy but can't. Maybe MARYE or someone can explain, it seems really wierd.
Free in the USA. Offered the choice of parcel service to ship to the UK, much cheaper than the 2012 sub shipping.

Well, I can't remember when I last placed an order thru' dead.net that went straight through. When I click on "Place my order" in Checkout, nothing happens. Zilch. Nada. Chrome v22.
Every sodding time.
Dave: as 2013 will be the 40th anniversary of Watkins Glen, how about considering issuing a box set to include not only the Grateful Dead performances (including the incredible soundcheck which we got a nice taste of on the "So Many Roads" boxset!), but also the performance of the Allman Brothers and The Band. The ABB "Hittin' The Note" staff told me a few years ago at a Wanee Festival the Dead/Rhino own the tapes for all of the performances. That sure would be a very sweet and timely boxset for 2013...in memory of Levon Helm too.
This looks good. And apart from the fantastic music to come there is also some other very good news
The ordering went without a hitch
The cost for shipping all four DaPs to Europe is now just $9.95 (last year it was around $45). Fantastic.
So thanks very much for listening and responding Rhinos and other PTB. Apologies to those who have been annoyed by our moaning about shipping costs for 5 years, but then again it does seem to have worked ;-)
Now all they have to do is get the discs from their place to my place on time and undamaged. Fingers crossed.
I may have missed this; has anyone seen international shipping on the order form?
I may have missed this; has anyone seen international shipping on the order form?
But I have to disagree with David about this show containing the best of the three PITB > UJB > Dew > UJB > PITB sandwiches. I like 3/23/74 better, it's harder-hitting.
Per-phreakin'-fection...I would take out a second mortgage to purchase a release comprising all of 1973....The second series simply could not get off to a better start than with an installment from Fall '73 - not a bad show in the lot (just work your way through the catalog on archive.org)! Thank you David and Rhino! Absolutely SUPERLATIVE selection...Marlo say [it] gotta get got, and that's all there is!

I guess I ought to order the subscription, since I ordered all 2012 DaP's ala carte. The possibilty of a bonus disc from early '70 is temptation enough for me, especially if they make an acoustic mix from recently received shows that aren't complete or worthy of individual release. Patagonia Fox, if that's the case and acoustic '70 puts you to sleep, you can send me your copy and I'll find it a good home. Love me some "Ballad of Casey Jones." Hats off, Dave L. Given all of the gripes here about the business side of releasing GDead music, I liked the acknowledgement that, yes!, it's a business, but the people putting this music out do it out of love. Oh, and, fall '73!!
Darn it, 1973 is very, very, VERY well documented already! I'm sure this is a stunning show. So is 11/11, 12/2, 2/28 and every other one released. So much music from so many other years is waiting to be released. the 1980's are WAY underrepresented, in my humble opinion. With that said, I'm looking forward to this release, and more diversity in the rest (hint, hint).
Handjive, if the tilted horizon line bothers you, you are obviously unfamiliar with the San Juan Islands and you are not a boater. Boating is big in the San Juans and boaters are used to life on the tilt. Also, the Dead were all about life on the tilt, were they not? So you might be the one who’s out of balance, but maybe that's a good thing. ; )
Looks fine to me.
Toilet paper stuck to his shoe? Whatchu smokin'?!

Dave--
I realize you've got plenty on your mind, so I figure you can take on one more thing to worry about.
Next time you go out to the seaside to videotape yourself, please take a moment to **level the camera**!! The horizon of an ocean is a perfect reference line. When that line is not level the whole thing looks goofy....like you've returned from the men's room with a long piece of toilet paper stuck to your shoe.
"it doesn't start shipping till November 1, so on October 25 it is premature to be worried."
Thanks. I read something that made me think it had shipped early October, but it wasn't clear.
you say "I have like most of you collected hundreds of shows simply by downloading off of e-tree,"
I never heard of the site, but when I go there it isn't very obvious how it works.
And it says "Although no music is downloadable..."
http://db.etree.org/
Do you somehow download from that site?

Little Ben, your well researched post on the possible shows in the '69-'70 trove is really helpful (and as someone else said, it just whets my appetite all the more). Thanks man. You rock.
