Grateful Dead

Dave's Picks Volume 26: Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, NM 11/17/71 - SOLD OUT

The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

My choices for Dave's Picks Vol 27:
a show with 27 in the date;
a show from 1970;
a show from 1980 (yeah, baby!);
a show from 1985 (Hershey or Merriweather Post shows, but hardly likely, a real long shot for any of those three.)

We'll find out in a few weeks.

Daves 27

I agree that 1979-1981 looks the most likely release for Daves Picks 27. Especially with the new version of Anthem with its bonus disc due to be released soon. And 79-81 would be alright with me, but the most exciting choice would be another show for 1968-or 1969-especially the first half of the year, when they were still rocking The Eleven at most shows.

Not for nothing:)
But have we heard any DaP 27 clues from Bolo? I thought all the previous clues were related to the box set?

So are we likely to get the

So are we likely to get the DaP 27 announcement the week after July 4?

I agree that 79-81 is "due" based on what has been recently released. The rest of the 80's are unlikely of course. I would prefer a 68 or 69 release too.

Totally agree RV3... lets save more 72, 73, 74, 77. 78 for DaP #29 and beyond!
My slogan for the next release is: "Can't wait for some '68 !"

Wha'd ya think Dave ;-)

DAVE PICK #27...

This board has obviously gone crickets since the "box" news\board, but just a couple of points for DP#27:

1) With the Dick's Picks Series, out of the first 27 releases 7 were from POST-1978. So far with Dave Picks we have had exactly 2 of the 26 releases from POST-1978.
2) With the new box from 1973-1974, isn't it about time for a few shows POST-1978. Honestly, how much from 1972, 1974, and 1977 can be put out?!?! I mean I like those years, BUT HONESTLY other than a good handful of shows from those 3 years, every show sounds the same from each of those particular years.
3) Give us the next 4-5 Dave Picks from's just time.

I know the 1970s only cult on these boards doesn't like this, but it's just time on for some non-fkn 1970-1978 releases...LOL

Wife, kids and I have to move out of our house at some point this summer after 8 years. The owner no longer wishes to hang onto it and is selling it and we don't know how soon, etc but aside from having to uproot our garden *I am in Colorado, not just veggies out there* I don't know what our god damned new address is going to be! Makes it a royal pain when wanting to place an order. Might just have to have it shipped to the in-laws house.

Has anyone else gone rooting through their tapes to see if they have any of these shows? I know I have digital sbd files of ALL of them but....but.....official releases! Remastered sound!!! LINER NOTES!!!

Only ordering the 3 disc set as I stated earlier and a brother from the board has already reached out guaranteeing me the rest of the officially released box. We are all terribly good at sharing things and anyone who has dealt with me on a personal level from this board can vouch for my willingness to share any and all sound that I hang on to. Gotta love our community.

Hoping to meet up with some of you in Albuquerque or Boulder this summer for the Dead and Company gigs as well as the August Jerry Garcia Birthday Band gigs in Vail. Anyone who made it to last year's Red Rocks birthday bash for Jerry's 75th knows not to miss that one. PM me if interested!

Smooooooth. . .

I guess now we can start complaining that online ordering has gotten tooooooo easy – before I knew it, I'd pulled the trigger on the box, the LPs, the 3CD set AND the t-shirt. Just too smoooooth. What was I thinking?

Yes, it was very easy for me to order, too. Last time I had to go into town to use the librarys computer-this time I could order from home. Fantastic looking release, too!

Re: Otis

I'm right there with you..

It makes sense on a lot of levels.. and I believe it's the first geographic centric box set that spans time and sets a precedent for potential Greek Boxes, MSG Boxes, Frost Boxes, Fox Boxes, BCT boxes etc.

Anyway.. they are some great shows here. I enjoyed the latest string of Dave's Picks from 73/74. This should be a step above.

Disagreeable subjects

"The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions."
Adlai Stevenson

I found that looking for this:
(D)uring one of his presidential campaigns a woman called out to him: "Governor, you have the vote of every thinking person!". He (supposedly) responded "That's not enough, madam, we need a majority!"

A bunch of quotes from this major figure in Mid-20th Century American politics can be found at .
Lots of Will Rodgers-esque humor and some lofty ideals pithily stated. Worth a read, I think.

"Unreason and anti-intellectualism abominate thought. Thinking implies disagreement; and disagreement implies nonconformity; and nonconformity implies heresy; and heresy implies disloyalty—so, obviously, thinking must be stopped. But shouting is not a substitute for thinking and reason is not the subversion but the salvation of freedom."

Pacific NW Box Set

If this is true, than I am all in! There is some serious jamming throughout those shows!

Someone below mentioned that the set will contain one Dark Star and two The Other Ones. By my calculations, and if the shows are indeed 6/22 and 6/24/73 and 5/17, 5/19, and 5/21/74, then I only count one The Other One. However, I do see that we would be getting three, count em' THREE, Money Money's! That is something! (I just hope that doesn't mean that the set will cost 3 x's the Money Money it should...)

More leaks than the White House here in DeadLand :)

EDIT: Ah, I see I forgot 6/26/73 - There is the other The Other One :)

Good Gravy

I saw Wavy in the shoe and boot section of REI in Berkeley once.

But alas, he had to go away empty handed, because they were all out of clown shoes.

People who are smart get into politics, but I would say that the vast majority of them are lacking any kind of moral compass and have severely underdeveloped understandings of ethical quandaries. I'd blame it on the parents.

I met Wavy a number of times at festivals on the East Coast (always Gathering of the Vibes as he was MC) and even got to spend some time with his pet trout that is always properly collared and leashed for public spaces.

Very kind man and always willing to chat for awhile, even think I ran into him at the Furthur show in Golden Gate Park a few years back, but those memories are definitely mostly composed out of the psychedelic ether.

a good career choice?

Politics as a career doesn't seem to appeal to people who are too smart. Unfortunately.

So, Captain Stupid and Captain Idiot meet in Singapore

Trump should have handed Kim copies of FW69, Eur72, SSDD, and GSTL; and then told him to spend the next 120 days listening to them, and then they would meet again to hold Furthur talks.
It would serve Trump well to listen to those shows too.

a quick plug

1st - box looks great, sound should be a very nice improvement over what I have in stock. Two of the six dates I seem to have decent audience, the other 4, okay. Looking forward. A quick hit of 6/26/73 Here Comes Sunshine had Phil sounding very up front.

The quick plug - just got in mail today a Frank Sinatra release. The family/foundation released 3 live shows from 66, 74 & 87. Nicely recorded, classic Frank. Was only 30 bucks.
