Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2-CD set)

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's eponymous debut studio album. What better way to celebrate than with a special album reissue series that will include two-disc deluxe editions and limited edition vinyl picture disc versions of all the group’s studio and live albums! These two-disc deluxe editions will include the original album with newly remastered sound, plus a bonus disc of unreleased recordings.

THE GRATEFUL DEAD: 50th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION contains the original album — newly remastered from the original tapes by David Glasser, and restored by Plangent Processes — along with a bonus disc that features the complete unreleased concert from July 29th, 1966 and select cuts from July 30th, 1966 at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in British Columbia, mastered by Jeffrey Norman. Only a few recordings from the Dead’s first two years exist, but each one reveals corners of the band’s repertoire not captured anywhere else. That’s especially true here, with three songs making their last appearance on any surviving Dead recording: “Standing On The Corner,” “You Don’t Have To Ask Me,” and “Cardboard Cowboy.”

Getting To Know Audio Engineer David Glasser

It's time for a little tech talk with David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. We will trace his deep history of working with the Grateful Dead up to today's release, find out why a Boston Music Hall gig from winter '71 might be his favorite, and get to the bottom of just what the heck Plangent Processes is/does.

I think they added a 'New' to the title and called it a new song.

Got mine

From Amazon after Warner incorrectly cancelled my order. Thanks.

Sounds good. Wish there was new stuff on it. Still, has each song from the original on it save Morning Dew.

PS: I don't know who at Rhino thinks Minglewood is an original song, but they are wrong & someone who knows what they are doing needs to do the liner notes from here on in. 30 Trips had the same error (among others).

Spinning 7/29/66 now on CD

Sounds great. Can hear Phil and Jerry and Pigpen loud and clear. (This was before Tom, right?) I don't think Bob contributed too much in the early days :)

Got mine from Amazon and it has the same "psychedelic sleeve" shown in the unboxing video above.

Mono Mix

I thought the same thing, there's plenty of space. I bought the RSD mono mix on vinyl a couple years ago and it's a little easier to listen to since the stereo mix isn't really 'stereo', vocals, guitars, keys and drums are either hard left or hard right and it's a little jarring. The mono mixes of the first two Jefferson Airplane albums are better than the stereo versions as well.

I always try to avoid piranhas. Check out Bullmoose. Spend over $30 and get free domestic shipping. And $11.98 with no tax is hard to beat.

I pre-ordered this, the 12-inch vinyl and the 7-inch singles subscription along with the early bird Dave's Picks subscription and got free domestic shipping on all of them which helped ease the pain a little. Whether I get a psychedelic sleeve is yet to be seen.

I saw this after the fact...

... and now I am kicking myself. My order came to $28+ - I will always be checking from this point on.

Really a shame, as I would rather buy from the source, but it ain't worth over $10!

In addition, I have a feeling I will be getting the same version you will be.

Live and learn.

The dead.net list price on this release

For me, I think the $19.98 is a little too much, then I add shipping charges ($6.99) and my state's sales tax of 6% ($1.62) and the total is $28.59. Too much.
So I went elsewhere online to that major online store that's named after that river in Brazil, and for $1.50 LESS, I bought this release AND Jerry Garcia's "Hart Valley Drifters: Folk Time" CD release. I'm not too sure if I'll get a "distinctive psychedelic sleeve" copy, but that doesn't matter too much.
So sorry www.dead.net

Mono Mix?

Maybe no one else cares but I think they missed a golden opportunity to give us the mono mix with this edition. Not complaining though as it's nice to have this music celebrated. I celebrate it almost every day!

sorry to hear about the order snafu's. I missed out on the advent deals by a day. Tried to talk to someone from support, but after being on hold for an exorbitant amount of time I finally got thru to customer service. To say that English was not their primary language is an understatement. The rep kept asking me to repeat myself because of a "phone line" issue. After 15 minutes of "diss-cussion", I asked to speak to his supervisor. The supervisor was in a meeting and not available.

I went to Mary, but she confirmed I was a day late, so dead.net got a little less money from me.

Sorry for the rant, but wanted to pass on that that famous retailer that destroyed the book retailers is offering this set minus the ltd cardboard for under 16 bucks as a preorder. They've also got three of the Real Gone Dick Picks as well (33, 34, 35). I sent an email to Real Gone asking if they were going to rerelease the Dick's Picks series or possibly release the Road Trips or Dave's Picks series and their cryptic answer was they were working on a couple of these.
Hopefully this will happen!

distinctive psychedelic sleeve

I never did get an answer regarding the distinctive psychedelic sleeve on the first 10,000 CD orders so I am guessing I will pass on the pre-order. I called the toll-free number and spoke with a nice gentleman who could not give me an answer regarding this matter. His suggestion was to go to the "contact us" link on this site and send an email. I have done that and have received no response. I guess customer service at dead.net is dead.

I've been charged $31.82 and have had the charges reversed on the same day at least three times since I ordered Dave's Picks, the 7" series, and the reissues. Glad to know I'm not the only one, but what in the heck are they doing?
Has anyone talked with the Rhino folks?

I'm assuming that this regular 2CD version will be available at local records stores. I find that Newbury Comics in Mass. usually gets whatever isn't a limited edition Deadnet exclusive. I never preorder these releases. The price in stores is usually comparable or less. Why pay shipping costs and deal with the hassle? Sorry to Deadnet. I love the releases and all but I try not to over subject myself unless there's no alternative. On that note, happy weekend and happy holidays.

Ordered immediately once these discs were announced. A charge for US$50 showed up on my credit card and stayed on as an 'unposted' charge for about 10 days. Annoying to say the least. Then it just disappeared?! No explanation, no nothing.

Warner Music Charges?

I ordered this here right away, and my card was charged by Warner Music Group (not Dead.net). Then the charge was reversed. Which I guess is pretty standard for a pre-order like this. But since then, they've charged my card 5 times. Each charge is reversed a few days later. They charged it again today. Is this really necessary? Anyone else experiencing this?

In the Almanac it was stated that the first 10,000 units pre-ordered will come with a distinctive psychedelic sleeve. That is no longer mentioned in the description on this site. Does that mean that they are already gone? Any help with this question is appreciated.

Don't be afraid to make these reissues 3-4 disc sets. I'm in. Sure I have all the original albums on disc from the last time they were reissued but I saw this album pre-order on iTunes for $14.99 so look at it this way, for $14.99 you get a killer 1966 Dead show in awesome quality and the first album remastered in awesome quality as a bonus. Peace.

14 years

For me, hearing what the last 14 years of technological advances contributes to the sound of this 50-year-old album is exciting. And after listening to Standing On The Corner and comparing it to the sound quality of my unofficial PNE recording is like night and day. After waiting decades for this show to be released I am very happy and grateful that this two-cd package is being offered. Now if they can do this kind of thing for Anthem Of The Sun, Aoxomoxoa and Live Dead before I die, I'll be one happy five-decade long bus rider.

problem solved

some one buy one copy, burn the new live show cd's and distribute them accordingly. This is just a way to resell all ready heard music, remaster or not, it is a marketing ploy that won't work on me, I'm sure this show will be available soon for all to have, without having to buy a "new, improved" version of an old album you all ready own. Nice try, but no.

50th anniversary series ....

Just release all the latest mastered albums in 2017 .... I've ordered GD, and I'll definitely get Anthem, Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead, but if they wait until the actual 50th anniversary of them, then by the time they get to In The Dark or Built To Last, I guarantee we won't be buying CD's, so I'm not going to worry too much 'bout those.

I'm for sure going to get this, but I understand some of the controversy about having to buy a cd you already own in order to get the 66 show. When I first saw this I immediately started thinking about who I could give the extra to haha, but then again the previous one has bonus tracks including some live stuff also. I may end up giving the new cd of the 1St album away to a friend in the old slipcase, and then I'll just put the Previous (Golden Roadversion) into the new 2cd slipcase.

Either way I'm excited about this 66 show being released, it should be really chill.

So those of us who shelled out for the The Golden Road box set and already have "remastered" copies of all of the albums must now shell out for newly remastered copies of what we already have in order to get the live show. Smacks of endlessly recycling the same music in order to maximize financial return to me. Good luck to you, but I'll keep my dough, thanx.

Yes, complete

The DeadBase 50th has the lists like you say:

7/29/66: Dancin, Cold Rain, King Bee, One Kind Favor, You Don't Have to Ask, Hey Little One, BIODTL, Schoolgirl, Minglewood.

* list may be incomplete & may be from the 30th.

7/30/66:
1: Standing on the Corner, I Know You Rider, Next Time, Top of the World, You Don't Have to Ask, Big Boss Man, Stealin, Cardboard Cowboy, Baby Blue, Cream Puff War.

2: Viola Lee,BIODTL, Schoolgirl

* list may be incomplete & may be from the 29th.

I just think since the venue is the same on 7/29 & 7/30, and there are some songs repeated, the dates just got confused.

re: Complete Concert?

a Taper's Section from back in 2007 listed Dancing in The Streets, I'm A King Bee > One Kind Favor as having been played on 7/29/66. I guess those dates are wrong, or this is not the complete concert.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Also if the Taper's Sections are any indication, it looks like the only 1967 shows that are in the Vault are 3/18/67, 8/4-5/67, 10/22/67, 11/10-11/67. I have to imagine 9/3-4/67 are there too, given that we've seen bits of these shows released.

Original or re-mixed version?

This is always tricky with these re-issues. Even more so with this one, as we have different mixes AND different lengths to deal with. Which one is this one? Hard to keep straight.

I think it goes something like this:
a) Original Mix/Original Length: Gold WB Label (1967) or Dark Green WB (1967-71)
b) Re-Mix/Original Length: Palm Tree/Burbank Label (1972ish)
c) Golden Road + Stand Alone Re-Issue = Extended lengths? Remix or Original?
d) Warner Bros Studio Album/Record Store Day 180 (Vinyl) = Remix or Original?
e) 50th Anniversary = Remix or Original?

I think for Anthem that the Golden Road re-issue & Warner Bros Studio Album re-issue were the original mixes. For Aoxomoxoa the GR was the re-mix and the Warner Bros Studio Album was the original. I'm confused on the first record, however.

Someone with some knowledge lay it on me & feel free to correct if I made a mistake.

E72 Deluxe?

My guess is that the unreleased-in-the-Complete-E72-Box video material will be the bonus disc on an otherwise original-content-only edition of the album. That would explain why there was no DVD in that "complete" box...
I'm not gonna get this first album re-issue, but I am eager to see what's offered with the other albums!

I was figuring it out also, then realized the 50th anniv year for BUILT TO LAST would be 2039...WTF?!?!!? Seems a little silly to stretch out that far, or to even think it will be viable in 2039....I mean I hope so, but everyone on these boards & interested will 70-80 yrs old, C'MON.....they need to release an album a month for the next 18 months.....I relly just want the "extra Live" disc for: GTH, DEAD SET, RECKONING, WOAN, In the Dark, and Built....can we just get these out PLEASE!!!!!
