Grateful Dead
Dave's Picks 2017 Subscription

As we head into 2017, we're starting our 6th year of the Dave's Picks series. And we can't thank you enough for continuing to support, and being interested in, our quarterly archival release series. When we started the series, with a long phone call in the summer of 2011 between myself and Doran and Mark at Rhino, we decided to retire the Road Trips series and start something new, something that was specifically crafted to meet the needs and interests that reflected your feedback over the previous four years. In late 2011, I mapped out the first five years, 20 Picks, of the series, but not beyond that. Although we veered off course quite a bit in those five years and 20 Picks, we did so mainly because of the flexibility we've allowed ourselves in letting the music play the series. What's right to release at any given time is what we focus on. As for the next five years, Picks #21-40? We don't know what's beyond #21 (which you might have heard is the exceptional 4/2/73 show at the Boston Garden, a truly perfectly-played example of the excellence that defined 1973 Grateful Dead concerts), but we have some great ideas brewing. The world of archival Grateful Dead music has some exciting times ahead, so stay tuned. We love working on this series, and we do it because of you. Your support and feedback and enthusiasm is what drives us to make each Pick as exciting as the last one. - David
Due to continued demand, we're keeping the 2017 Dave’s Picks production run at 16,500 of each of the four releases, but as with the 20 previous volumes, we expect all of the four Dave’s Picks in 2017 to sell out quickly; some of the past releases sold out in less than 24 hours! We say this every year, and we'll keep saying it because it is true - the only way to avoid disappointment and be guaranteed that you'll receive all four Dave's Picks in 2017 is to subscribe.
In addition to the four CD releases in 2017, totaling 12 CDs, you’ll also get the subscription-exclusive bonus disc, which has proven to be one of the most highly sought after collectables we’ve ever released and free domestic shipping. Subscriber bonus discs will not be released outside of this offer.

Dave's Picks 20 is a gift from the Grateful Dead, it's very good, it shines, but not quite at full brillance. Still, it is deeply appreciated.
Awaiting Dave's Picks 21 (4/2/73 Boston Garden)
A Deadheads Taping Addendum is up for sale NOW!!!! $249.00 opening bid 0 bids as of now. I might just start the bidding even though I already have one I can use one as a coffee table book and stash the other one away for posterity. It's very tempting as its only the 3rd one I ever seen on eBay since eBay's inception. Yeah I'll get the ball rolling.
Play DEAD DeadLand it's Wednesday!!!!!!!
i could be very wrong but i don't think 2/14/68 was the first time he sang that verse, but instead the night they announced from stage that "this next one" was dedicated to him (can’t remember the exact wording).
I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere but I can't find it, so forgive me if this is old ground for most. In the booklet that was included with Road Trips 2.2 (2/14/68), it talks about that show being the first where Bobby sings the Cowboy Neal verse. Also, Bobby mentions writing it in a hotel in OR and then finding out it was the same night Neal died. However, while listening to 11/10/67 from 30 Trips, I noticed he sings the verse at this earlier show. Also, Neal died on 2/4/68 so it seems like Bobby misremembered (go figure) and the notes were wrong about the verse. These are the things that keep me up at night and the things that make my wife roll her eyes.
On another note, the Big River from Boston on 6/28/74 (Dick's Picks 12) has Jerry piping in to sing the last word each line of the last verse (Up, Enough, Blues, Gulf). Any other examples of him doing that?
Thanks for indulging me!
I noticed it was down a couple of weeks ago as well. I have this one bookmarked, along with setlist.fm
Jim I have to check out the links you posted.
I was playing around with URLs trying to see if I could find the elusive "Shows By Year" page. No dice yet, but I did find the entire list here:
....well, you learn something new every day. Never heard of this song. Very interesting. Thanks guys....I guess I need to go back to Deadhead school....
Yikes!
I've reported the problem. Thanks for the heads up. The page is there; the shows not so much.
...this morning at around 10 after 10 o' clock on Farwell. With the Stealie state of WI bumper sticker...
Who turned on to main and then left on to Hastings Way. That I pulled up next to and held up my disc 3 of Dave's Pick's 20 to.
Who gave me the thumbs up, and who I smiled back at and then went the same way a little while until the next light.
I hope you and your friend have a Grateful Day!
P.S. Cool sticker by the way! :-)
gotta check that out.
random shout-out to 9/23 and 24/72. listened to those on cassette while driving for Uber Eats. Sweet as Krispy Kreme Donuts.
I tell you, Uber Eats is easy money. You should check it out.
Listening to the Ventures at the moment as I get ready to depart for my usual gig.
also, check out 12/15/71. It has a Dark Star.
Just because we’re nearing another solstice, is no reason to ignore Equinox. Thanks for the nudge Gollum. Probably only gave Equinox a single, distracted listen when I got the extended Terrapin Station LP in Beyond Description. You’re right, Phil’s music & lyrics do send shivers, altho reading the lyrics helps clear up some unclear parts on the recording. Sixtus is right; coulda, woulda, shoulda been a great departure-point for another jamming tour de force. For lyrics/commentary: http://www.whitegum.com/introjs.htm?/songfile/EQUINOX.HTM
Hey Gollum - I also "found" Equinox on the bonus tracks. It's actually a really good song. When I listen to it, especially that little jammy section at the end, I could totally envision the boys pulling that off and stretching it out. You get little tinges of what it could be - at least I do. But I also love that song and I am glad they released it officially even if it was never actually played elsewhere.
As for DP 32, this was one of the last DP I picked up as I was a little weary of the potential for Plinky....but alas, no plink - all pianer. And the content is actually very good. Aside from the first set gems mentioned, I also enjoy anything with a 'Music' split (in this case Sugaree); second set is no slouch either with an energetic Chinacat>Rider (which, to my ears, toward the very end of the cojoining jam segment, they *almost* play the Feelin' Groovy bit..it sounds like they might do it, then they back off). Its still a fun moment wrapped up in an otherwise psycic ball of energy. But for me the real highlight of the release is the Playin in the Band. For whatever reason, this version gets a really jazzy workout. there are some fantastic Phil bass lines in the there being met by Brent's pianer...they whole thing just oozes jazzy riffs.
Oh, and also had to chime in regarding Infrared Roses. That is a fantastic release and I thoroughly enjoy the varying soundscapes they put together, and how they vary between *scary* and tribal. One that particularly sticks out to me is the Bruce-led 'Silver Apples of the Moon'...some very beautiful lead grand piano that eventually heads off into the Dark Star riff....too bad they didn't include the rest there....ahh well. I've always wondered which show this segment was from (anyone know?)...
Have a fantastic Day, All!
Sixtus
Did Hunter write that lyric? Got a link to a cool version?
Equinox is probably my favorite unreleased song (except as the studio outtake). That's one that "got away". Everytime I listen to it, it gets stuck in my head for a few days.
Perhaps my favorite never studio released song. Or maybe that award goes to Jack Straw. Leave it to the GD to not give studio attention to what are arguably two masterpiece songs.
..but lots of GD supporting actors here.

Agreement all the way around. Greyfolded, Infrared Roses, late era Space (thinking the especially of Beam intensive ones). I do have a soft spot for vintage The Other Ones, Dark Stars, Weather Report Suites and the occasional 20 min Here Comes Sunshine's too.
I have to listen to DiP 32 again though. I do recall being enthralled with the Let It Grow (but I have a soft spot for that one) at the same time as not digging the sound.
But it comes highly recommended from the Senator, therefore its my patriotic duty to give it a virgin listen. Country first.. right?
Speaking of loving this site.. its the reviews, critiques and perspective that keeps my interest. The characters are just points for style. The music's the coffee, the storytellers the cream that sits on top.
....as is DP 32 Alpine. Say what you want of the sound quality (I'm not nearly as picky), but the BIODTL->On The Road Again, Althea, Let It Grow to end set one is hitting the spot right now....although the Grow sounds a little hurried, but I'm not complaining....Brent and Bobby shine like chrome....no plinking from Mydland as far I can tell. Full on piano?
Both Infared and Greyfolded are very important to me as a fan. Thank you for reminding me!
Love this site
Peace
Roxy Music's "Avalon". Released the summer before my junior year in high school, June 1982. A great album for textures, Bryan Ferry's beautifully velvety melodies and Phil Manzanera's understated, but excellent guitar playing. Very cohesive album. Not a bad song on the album.
Favorite song on the album is "True To Life", then probably "More Than This" and "Avalon" . . . or is it "The Space Between" and "Take A Chance On Me" . . . or maybe "The Main Thing and "To Turn You On" . . . haha . . . well you get the point. I LOVE this album.
Produced by Rhett Davies. He also produced another favorite album of mine at the time (and still today), King Crimson's "Discipline" album. Yikes! What a King Crimson lineup that one was. Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin & Bill Bruford. I remember seeing a video of them performing in 1982 or 1983. My young mind was thinking, "WTF", how do people create music like that.
Anyway . . . carry on Deadheads.
Sometimes life conspires against us all. So when it conspires for us.. especially when bluegrass is involved.. its a happy day.
I wont bore anyone with details, a fortunate series of events hit me from four different angles basically at the same time ending with a little Old and In The Way playing on the Radio. I also just got my first listen to the JGAB's Christmas Time's A Comin' and had my new copy of Hart Valley Drifters arrive basically at the same time.
So its Bluegrass week in MD. All week long. Happy day.
SWEEEEEET!!! :)
....remember that Dead & Co Fenway print you got me last year? Well, I can't find the tube. Mrs. Vguy was asking me for Christmas ideas a few weeks back. Off the cuff I responded with, "A profession frame job of that poster would be cool." She's pretty awesome....
Yeah, noticed that functionality was missing too. Started noticing it last week I think. I was thinking about pm'img marye, and glad y'all are as crazy as me about this band to want this sort of thing to work. I'm struck, but not surprised folks are bringing this up. Dead Nuts, we.
Backdoor access to the shows: You can search by venue 'e.g. "cape cod, or spectrum" using the search function in the upper left portion of the page and shows will come up.
I have the same link issue as noted by BxI'd using chrome - no shows or years listed...
Not that I needed a change, just listening to music I know very well with new ears - looking forward to extended relistens to the GDP releases with the new setup. Just listened to Aja and Katy Lied by Steely Dan. The old albums are a concise 40 minute shot of intense listening.
Can't wait to listen to Sgt Peppers in mono again - was blown away the first time I heard that from the boxset. What a different listen than the "stereo" releases of same material. Also on tap is some Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and more Radiohead. Maybe a little Zero7 to finish the float down the cerebral spinal fluid river...
marye,
I still see...
...nothing.
No matter how I try, that page with the listing of the years still is ______. (blank)
Thank you for trying to remedy this problem.
They're right here. http://www.dead.net/shows-by-year
The show is a good example of how spacy the middle of the 2nd sets started to become again in '78, I think I remember leaving shows in '79 very satisfied as to the band's re-dedication to creativity during Space. For me, 80s Drums>Space seems overall as adventurous and productive as many Dark Star jams. And I wonder why Infrared Roses and GrayFolded were just once shot deals... Those are great documents of the Dead's brilliance.
I used Setlists.net or Deadlists.com
Both are pretty user friendly and have their advantages.
Not sure what happened to what they had here.
I wanted to look up 4/20/83, but nothin'.
Genesis and Duke. That album was always a huge fav and looking back was a big lip for the band too. Kinda provided a switch back in 1980.
I'm also pulling out another long lost fav, Renaissance and A Song for all Seasons. Both Northern Lights and especially Kindness were big songs for me. I first heard that record at the public library and loved Annie's voice.
Also Bob I noted you said Mono for Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. I love the Mono box! Sounds like it did when I was a kid in the 60s. Pepper does have a sharpened vibe in Mono. One of my favorite boxes.
Anybody know Why that Section is gone?
Well, at least its not Friday..
Picking up where VGuy left off yesterday.. 12/13/80 has nice, funky opening sequence with a not too often played Stranger > Sugaree, they To Lay Me Down is sublime and the set ends the set with a little L>S>Deal. Nice little show.

Really digging some of these fall/winter 1980 shows. Dave's Picks 8 ignited my interest in this period and there's a few gems yet to be unearthed. Certainly another release or to be unearthed, cleaned up and Normanized.
That's why he owes me money! Rat bastard..
....yeah. I've heard of him. Rumor has it he was on the grassy knoll in Dallas circa November 1963. Disappeared without a trace. Couple of eyewitnesses supposedly spotted him in the balcony at Winterland in 1969. Was selling boxes....
Have you seen him? Rat bastard owes me money.
... didn't he write the code of Hammond Robbie? It was in COBOL if I remember right.
Never heard of him. Who'd he play for?
https://archive.org/details/dq2003-01-22.flac16
Found these guys on the archive while tracing down a taper's name vs artist. Anyone else do that? Sometimes I find a well recorded show and I will look at the taper for other shows they recorded. Found a nice recording from Max Creek (I knew the name but not what they did, it was some nice stuff), anyway I follow that taper and it took me to "Depth Quartet", well several of the members were from Max Creek, but the guitarist was a Scott Murawski, who played in Max Creek, but also the Bill Kreutzmann Trio. Follow this link to a show of theirs and listen to "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" off the Paul Simon Graceland album,,,, VERY nice job.
I always thought Jerry liked the Graceland album, I only say that (since I just listened to the previously mention cover) and remembered, I used to have a tape of the Dead rehearsing and Jerry was trying to get thru "The Boy in the Bubble", he was struggling thru the timing, but got to the part, "think of the boy in the bubble and the baby with the baboon heart" and just locked it up with a tasty lick. Always wanted to see what he could have done with that tune. Anyone else have that tape?
Nice last listens, Magical Mystery Tour is one of my recent listens as well, great album. Haven't listened to Duke in a while, but that's another etched in my brain from repeated listens in high school and since. Last few listens for me include In a Silent Way - Miles Davis, Dire Straits - Dire Straits, DP 29 5/21/77 - GD, Magical Mystery Tour - Beatles, DP 24 3/24/74 - GD, Joe Walsh Greatest Hits.
Yes, Keith is m's conjoined twin.
Its a sensitive subject of late, he's a Phish head but hates the dead.
....any relation to mhammond? Wait, what? Seriously, this site need a keyboard player preference board....
Someone had asked a week or so ago if Keith ever played a Hammond. My comment was that I didn't recall any, but that I wouldn't be surprised if he snuck some in during the Fall '71 tour, since Pig sat out until December, and I figured there was probably one laying around. I'm pretty sure I hear it on the 10/22/71 show that is Dave's Picks Volume 3, on Playing In The Band.
Once again talk about Brent, I liked Brent a lot, his Hammond B3 was incredible and his mastering of it second to none. I liked his songs, wish they had had more time to work on Just a Little Light, could've been a monster. I also never thought his electric keys sounded plinky. (I think that's the word used a lot).
For years I never thought much of Keith, he was never really there in the shit tapes I got. Once the "official" stuff and the archive stuff came to me I learn to like him a lot. He was an excellent piano player.
Between the two styles NOTHING compared to the power of the B3. That Leslie whirl created a maelstrom of a tornado in the center of the sound or large puffs of steam like from a locomotive.
Both my opinion which only counts to me. The real opinion belonged to the band and Jerry LOVED to play with Brent. I think he like the organ sound also, I once read somewhere that Jerry commented, Merl Saunders created the center of the universe when he played. So once again, good enough for Jerry, good enough for me. It always reminds me of people who complain the government can't do anything right, big government sucks and should be done away with, BUT, give them the biggest, baddest military power and no problem!
The other whines I like is everyone complaining about Bob's slide playing and those that talk like "I've played slide for years,,, blah, blah, blah",,,, except I've heard of Bob Weir and not joe blow from the dead forum. If Bob sucked at slide, give me some of that sucking talent!
Last note - Jim in MD, I agree, if 80's shows were recorded with the same care as 60/70 shows people be whistling a different tune about the 80's.
....the boyz came out "Swingin'", and hit a home run. Another good show from the Swing....
https://archive.org/details/gd1980-12-12.136722.mtx.dusborne.flac16
I agree, Brent didn't save the band, but he didn't hurt them either....
"it would burn off both your ears
a couple ones "Deal" I heard recently that burn off both my little ears
9.27.72 , what is not good about this show ?
3.24.74 , Cow Palace ~ Wall of Sound ~ Schwing
5.11.77 , May 1977
6.24.83 , Summer 1983
10.17.83 , Lake Acid ,, haha what a blast this must have been
Hey Rhinos , what is up with a Primo "Truckin" performance from 1972-1974 included in the 2017 Dave's Picks Series ?
"Truckin" 1972-1974 ? Dave's Picks 2017 ? Rhinos ?
Just can't stop laughing. Saved them since they were so bad in their 70s prime? Brent was good, but so were the guys who came before.....like Pig and Keith.
As far as the WOS "sound", I think it's an acquired taste. I love it, but not everyone does. Peace.
right on man, glad you were able to get good Fenway tix despite running into the same issue I did. It seems it wasn't just the Fenway ones either; from what I saw in other forums, the Boulder presale codes also seemed to be invalid. It is beyond frustrating: to think you have a back door in, when in fact you have no door at all. Hopefully others were able to get the same kindness as I was afforded.
Sixtus
A great show all around and a great Deal.
I always liked the Downhill from Here Deal as well, while we are heading down DVD row. That Deal/China Rider back to back is 25 minutes of high octane rock and roll.
They all go down like a shot of really good Tequila.

....I know it caught mine....
