Fantasy Dead

By suggestion, since the Obama reunion topic is now a hotbed of discussion on the proper guitarist for the gig.

Here's the scenario: for whatever reasons seem good to them, Bob, Billy, Mickey and Phil decide to play some gigs together.

Who's the rest of the band?

Dead Heads for Obama - Part 2?

Why yes, we DID see this little item on Fox News.

We're in the process of gathering reliable information on the subject, and hope to have something official to announce soon. Thanks and stick around!

'Sex and the City' - Great or Godawful?

Over in spinnin' spinnin' free, the sequel, a discussion of Eat Cod (you'll just have to read it for yourself) morphed into deadheadkid, who Couldn't Help But Wonder which was the worst thing of all time, the rotary on Cape Cod or Sex and the City.

I figure this is good for a bit of conversation, especially with Carrie and her pals now raking it in at the box office.

Instant Flashback Songs

You know how some songs, and not just Dead songs, transport you back to a certain time and place whenever you hear them? Maybe you didn't even like them at the time, but three notes and there you are driving back from the beach when you're 16, or whatever.

And some songs just come to embody a particular time and place forever after.

What are yours?

Thanks to Trifecta for the title...

This topic is the continuation of the Channel Six topic http://www.dead.net/forum/i-turn-channel-six-president-comes-news

A few words based on recent experiences there. When expressing your opinions, please show respect for your fellow participants in the discussion who may not share them. Please refrain from demonizations, dismissal of people's beliefs as nonsense, etc. We are all bozos on this bus in one way or another.

New on the Bus?

We have many folks here who got into the Dead fairly recently. Among them is BobbaLee, who suggested this topic:

"Well I'm a true DH newbie All of my spare money goes to DPs and Vault ! I appreciate all of the work you have put into this how about a "Newbie" thread? I don't have the vast knowledge so many fans have and it would be fun to talk with other people that just discovered the GD."

He's right, you know. New folks, here's your own little corner, though we geezers will probably stop in now and then...

Never Mind Lily Allen, Who Is Yael Naim?

If you've seen the ubiquitous Mac commercial, you've heard her song "New Soul," which on the one hand, yeah, probably has Weird Al working on the spoof even as we speak. And yet, I find myself kinda liking it, and I just love the video:

Storytelling: 'The Tribe Around the Fire'

This started with a discussion between Frankly and Warlock, which follows below because it's too good to summarize and sets the tone beautifully... Tell your stories here! -- ME

Frankly

winds of change

what about a topic which deals with the fact that there is an evident change of DH generations underway.there are rhe seniors who are coming into their 60s(or more) now, than the middle of the road who came on the bus late 70s and the new ones who never had the luck to see the GD because when jerry passed away they were like 5-10yrs. old.wow, its in fact allready the 3rd gen. of DH and the 1st to grow up only on canned music.i am sure that the folks of all these 3 groups might have alot of interesting stuff to tell one another..:-)(-:peace to all

Warlock

Frankly... Frankly

I'm one of those 3rd generations. I was born in 1980, first listened to the GD in 92, got my 1st 2 CD's in 1993 which I think were a pretty popular buy among CD's for Dead fans. In the Dark and Skeletons From the Closet. I already had a musical love from listening to the GD in the short amount of time listening to them when Jerry died. I remember walking down the stairs half way to my mom doing her hair saying Jerry died this morning. She likes country music and only told me because she knew I loved the GD. I said no way, and walked back up to my room and cried.

The breaker is my mom said you can see the Grateful Dead when you turn 15. I was happy. I had a very close cousin who had been the type of guy that not only goes show to show, he lived show to show. Well, anyways me and Jerry share birthdays (Aug. 1st) I turned 15 (in '95) and I was ready to find the next ticket. Seen that they were just in Chicago a few weeks ago at the time that July... Their last Venue. Days later after never finding out the next time they were going to come to the Chicago, Jerry ended up passing away on August 9th 1995 (we all know, but...) I just turned 15!

Anyways at least I've seen the Dead, and to me the closest thing other than them... Dark Star Orchestra. I can count over 200 CD's in my GD collection, but that was all before 2002. I have about 2000 hours of live GD from just the computer and internet. I love the dead, and have come across many dead heads with the same knowledge that I do! I admit tho, I lack the experience! And the experience outweighs the songs, time a lifetime. I could get a copy of every show they ever played, and never get to feel, see, smell, hear, or even fathom what it was actually like to be there. That's why I love you!

I love you all, good night...

A dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago...

Frankly

warlock..

...see what i meant!i am sure that even if there are lifetimes between us..we all are DEADHEADS and we ride in the same bus on a long, strange trip from which nobody can tell where it will lead us.....end of an era?we have really just begun and im sure there are tons of stories to be shared on this topic! U could call it the "tribe around the fire" !!!.the futures here an we are it..........Peace To you all out there :-)(-:

Campaign 2008 - Who Do You Like?

Here and there in the forums people are expressing their enthusiasm for particular candidates in the upcoming U.S. elections, while others are saying Enough Already, We Don't Want To Hear About It.

So, this is the right place to discuss your favorites (or non-favorites) and other matters relevant to the campaign. If you're not into it, skip this topic!

And as for all you non-U.S. residents, if you want a similar topic for what's going on in your part of the world, speak up and I'll start it. Thanks!

Cool Stuff on Other Sites

In the course of our various online travels, we sometimes run across stuff that's cool enough that we want to share it with folks here, and which wouldn't exactly work to drag here wholesale. Quite often we can address this by posting links in relevant topics, but sometimes there isn't one.

In and Out of the Garden He Goes...

So after getting a fairly gratifying amount of long-overdue yard work done over the holiday weekend, I am getting a big kick out of the fact that decades' worth of chance-acquired plants are starting to look like they belong together. And then in another topic JurassicBlueberries was holding forth on the care and feeding of blueberry plants, and what with one thing and another, I bet we've got gardeners here. Let's talk!

(PS: Folks, this should probably go without saying, but if your gardening efforts involve the cultivation of plants illegal in your jurisdiction, please do not post about them here. For all practical purposes, everyone in the world can read what you post here, and that definitely includes your local law enforcement. Or your not-so-local law enforcement. Or your mama. Silence is golden.)

Religion, Spirituality and Deadheads

In one of the other topics, one of the folks seemed not to be so sure of the reception he'd get for saying he was a youth minister at his church.

In my experience, Deadheads span the full spectrum from Agnostic to Zoroastrian. I've met atheist Deadheads, Muslim Deadheads, Buddhist Deadheads, Catholic Deadheads, Jewish Deadheads, and Wiccan Deadheads. My Deadhead friends are all over the map on this stuff, and as far as I'm concerned one of the real richnesses of the scene is the ability to see how things look to other folks and, sometimes, experience it from their world.

Believe it if you need it, if you don't, just pass it on. But talk about it here, and please maintain a safe respectful place to do so.

The Song That Launched a Million Bathroom Breaks...

Okay, it wasn't ALL roses...

One of the subjects that came up behind the scenes the other day was how just about everybody had a particular song (usually found in the second set) that they regarded as the perfect opportunity to beat the restroom crowds, purchase another overpriced water bottle, or decide whether they just had to have that T-shirt. The perfect opportunity, in short, to be anywhere but in the hall listening to the tune.

In classic Deadhead fashion, it also came out that the same tune that sent one person running for the exits was the show's high point for another. So it goes. What's your experience?

Life After Dead?

So twice in the last week I've gotten into conversations with folks who were pretty intense Deadheads back in the day, and their general drift was look, the band no longer exists, they haven't played for 12 years. It is so Over. Get on with your life.

Which, of course, is a perfectly reasonable point of view.

And yet, here we are. And "we" includes people who never saw the band in the first place but definitely consider themselves on the bus now.

So what's up with this? Why are we here? Discuss...
