My ex wife snapped this pic of crispy me in my favorite home made t-shirt (the blue rose) packing up "CARCIA" after checking out of our hotel. I certainly was lacking in the sleep department (after 2 amazing shows that kicked off spring tour) but ready for show 3!

And my, did the Dead ever lay down a serious, thundering, crowd driven, turbo charged "Terrapin" on us that night! Little did I or all our friends know while we were packing up our vehicles of what was to hit us like a ton of bricks in just a few hours. That Terrapin alone steered me home post show on the 3 hour trip back to DC.

CARCIA drove us everywhere. ; )

So many miles.... and still going strong! I got this on the way into the show, not sure if it was 9-10 or 9-11-83 in Santa Fe,dude was still trying to get rid of his Utah stock so he could make next show, i traded him my xtra ticket for the shirt. I laugh at the memories every time one of my kids wears it for a niteshirt(modeled by my 10yr old daughter). I had recently broken my knee in a motorcycle accident and the cast was painted by me for the show (upsidedown and backwards remember) so I could dance in style. These weree and still are some of my close friends. Mark,(long blond hair and beard) drove 'Sugarmag' the bus from LA where we lived down to San Diego for the show. We all piled in for the trip-ha ha.......

A) This design was sun-tanned on to his back long after the paint was washed off, and

Friends hanging out in front of the Oakland Auditorium Arena during the New Year's Run. We drove out from Massachusetts, including an adventure abandoning the car on the highway outside of Boulder Colorado on Christmas Eve when they closed the road during a blizzard.

Bill Graham doesn't get enough credit here -- he arranged for us all to be allowed to set up our tents and camp in front of the hall for the entire run -- how difficult do you think THAT was to sneak past the permit-issuing authorities!

My friends and I wanted to be in the mardi gras parade. My friend Jolene and went down to the beauty school and got beehive hairdo's done for 5$. Our hair was so tall we couldnt fit in the car without lying down. We went down to the basement of the oakland coliseum during the set break. There was a bunch of freaks and characters mulling around. A dude from Grateful Dead productions started picking out who would be in the parade. We were chosen. We got to dance in the parade with our beehive hairdos. The photo is a picture of myself (redhair), Jolene (blonde), and my awesome friend eyeball.

Well......

During the last couple of years of seeing the boys the darkness rarely seemed to give. The boys kept singing it to us in their songs because you know they felt it. I also remember getting those little letters from them with the mail order tickets asking everyone to tune in and recognize what was happening.

Sad enough, I feel that darkness and drain of energy was ultimately what took Jerry. It was all too much - for everyone!

This picture sums it up for me. Things were simply getting weird and standing and watching a scene like this unfold kinda represented a sign of the times for me.

As you can see by my show list that I was getting very selective about where I would want to see the boys as the years progressed. That spark of light seemed harder and harder to create as the scene overtook the energy at many places and seemed to suck the energy out of the music. These LA shows represented that for me as the music was sounding very hollow and lacking in spirit. Jerry was forgetting words during every song and it was simply painful and sad at times to feel the magic slip away.

Hey Friends!

For any of you who attended the Spectrum run in Philly in the fall of 1988, this site may seem familiar. As was par for the course for me in those days, I arrived in Philly with my closest friends a day or so before the shows. There was a park across the street from the venue that became home for everyone for about a week! It was such a special place and I knew from the moment we arrived how special it would be.

As my friends and I drove up and found the sacred parking spot right at the edge of the park, we noticed that the first inhabitants of this massive field (that would soon be home to thousands) was this tipi set up by the rainbow family.

Soon after this photo was taken, as many more folks were starting to arrive, a rainbow circle was formed in the middle of the field and about a hundred or more people joined hands in circle and set an intention of peace and positive vibes for this space and for all of the people who would come here. We joined our voices in toning and danced around the circle singing some sacred songs and putting out positive intentions to the universe.

As we all know, the camping scene was threatened around this time as so many people were showing up to shows - many people doing so more for the scene and the party than the music. So, the intention we created was sending out a prayer that all who came would be respectful of each other, the land, and all who we encountered on our journey there.

I was deeply touched by this and felt like it spoke to the feelings I was having at the time of wanting to "leave only footprints" and be a presence of love and joy vs. destruction and chaos.

The days to come during these shows proved to be a "battle" of these energies as there were many displays of peace and community as well as many occurrences of destruction, abuse, and violence.

I give much thanks to having been supported and aligned with friends and community that were helping to keep the scene filled with love, collective responsibility, and focused on what was most important - the music!

The boys seemed to always be tuned in with the vibe happening inside and outside of the venue and reflected that intention in their playing and beautiful song choices over the 4 show run.

What a beautiful magical scene for a memorable 3 night run! Perfect weather and no hassles. And, the band was in top form.

Can anyone say, "Stir It Up!" Wow, what a mind blower to hear Jerry singing Bob Marley! And, the 2nd night..... it was Jazz Dead! And to boot, Healey was experimenting with the FM transmitters at the time so anyone who was within a 1/4 mile of the venue was able to tune it in on their radios. So, the fact that I did not have a ticket for night # 2 was no problem as there was a beautiful scene in the parking lot with a bunch of heads gathering and everyone cranking their radios and dancing like we were in the show - because we were!

Needless to say, their were some crispy sounding FM tapes of these shows floating around pretty soon after word.

We were in the mardi gras parade with our beehive hairdos. My friend Jolene (blond hair) and myself got our hair done in beehive hairdos at the beauty college. Price of beehive hairdo=5$. Price of being in grateful dead mardigras parade=priceless. We went down to the basement at the set break where a wierd cast of characters was assembling.
