Well, that was a bit tricky! Yes, definitely took some digging and took me outside of my usual bag of tricks. But there it was.
a little sneaky on this one. but i think im right. gonna go with it
12 years in and i'm still finding new killer shows. thanks for bringing us to this one.
maybe there was a tie?
It's not the first to the answer (like it was in the early days)...they do a random drawing for all the correct answers received. Lots of folks got this one right. :)
Where’d the cheese go?
if this is previously unreleased track how can it be an album opener?
Bertha's been released several times; however, when played on this date it has not. There's a bonus for you if you go play this show on a road trip
I have a Sixth Sense. ' I see Dead hints'.
i See what you did there. Lol
Took a lil while. Seek and find. Listening for the Jerry vocal phrasing where he repeats words or not. And the keys and guitar fills. Bobby getting some good lead guitar bits and pieces here. Have fun!
Edit to add.. the "Hint" is not necessarily something to be taken literally , factually or seriously as to the given day's song . It's just "there" sometimes.
Bertha is the first song on what many refer to as the Skull & Roses album. The band called it Skull F&@$, but Warner Bros said no. A 50th Anniversary version came out recently with an extended version, recorded April 27, 1971, Fillmore East in New York City.
The opening piano riff was pretty key for me. And yeah, the "hint" threw me off.
Good luck everyone!
Finished before the brownie kicked in
I had a run in, run around, and run down.
Try to see what's goin' down, try to read between the lines.
Happy 30 Days of Dead 2021. :-}
I can’t find a Bertha where a guy announces them like that. It’s driving me insane. Clearly it opens a show but I can’t find it. Aggg!
You know about setlists.net right? It's my first stop every morning in November when I start searching...it also offers direct access to Archive.org. Pretty much one-stop shopping - especially if you have a few contextual clues from the track itself!
Just not working for me today 😩
... today. I tried that route and then realized i needed to try a different route. Sometimes setlists dot fm is very helpful. Sometimes it is not complete or accurate. Try other sites
It's worth noting that the introduction you mentioned is a shortened version from the full intro on the archive. So from first listen you could be led astray if you're expecting it to be identical.
Sometimes the audio offered here on the site will be a more complete version or have a different mix etc than the various recording examples of the same show "out there "
If someone has a setlist dot fm account they may want to edit this show later after the reveal tomorrow.
Have you isolated the possible years yet?
Keith with the dead in 1971 before pig came back or 1972 but not Europe of course
Hey there Rat, patience - you'll find it if you don't worry about release. The intro is short, but the banter afterwards (on the Archive selection) is better - just pray that those electronic termites don't appear!
Nailed yesterday's quiz. Not very confident about today's pick.
A toughie for day 2 but damn that was a lot of fun. Spent most of this rainy fall day diving deep into Bertha rabbit holes but finally, finally figured it out. There are a couple of good clues in these here Comments, but even still, many threads to unravel for them to matter. Love dusting off my ol’ trusty DeadBase X. Accessing the Archive via the Attics app a key for me as well.
Happy hunting folks!
But I am out and can’t dust it off now
Jesus, that's a tricky one. @Moribundjt helped me out though.
That was fun treasure hunt and first one I’ve got this year!
This was a tricky find for most of us! Kinda felt like it was hiding in a fort…but definitely worth the search! For those still having a hard time, keep on drilling—you’ll strike oil!
I found setlists.net, deadlists.com and relisten.net to be a bit more helpful that DeadBase on this one.
Got this one before I got out of bed, lazy morning with the headphones and note pad… hey now! Absolutely love all the intros in the early days.
combined with Bob's ebullience made this one relatively easy to find and damn enjoyable to listen to. This show is not unfamiliar to me and I've been thinking about it lately for some unexplained reason Hahaha. Enjoy the search and the music friends!
Deep in the heart of... Grateful Dead Land! It took me about 10 minutes today, but I got some help from some hints, so I thought I would share some hints of my own. Love and Light, Family!
The second set it a real face melter
Took a while but found it. Just keep digging, digging. Never heard this show but lovin' it. Looking forward to Day 3! Oh yeah, the "clue" was basically useless. Not sure if I'm missing something there......??
The "hint" sucks...just sayin'...
What a great way to kick off a killer show back then. I enjoyed going through shows until I found it. I have to put on my headphones & jam to this show even though I just got Dave's Picks 40 in the mail.
hey wild one
hope all b well with you and family. happy you are here for the 30 day party.
send my regards to the usual fellow wackos
Searchin' for this Bertha
I wonder if you all care?
Finally, I turned around to see
When I heard the intro voice a calling
This one certainly did test me.
Now I really have to move
What a gem...Grateful for Hunter's muse!
Shhhhhh. It comes as a remembrance.
MORE PIGPEN PLEASE!!! Last year there was NO Pigpen. YIKES!!!
Knew the year from that piano sound. Still had to fish some.
Is that a 25 beat BIODTL after?
This show doesn't appear on the Setlist_COM site when searching for Bertha.
Good thing my DBX and Setlist_NET saved me....
Actually, I counted 28 if you include the 3 after the pause, pause, pause. hahaha.
