one of the most cherished times on the annual calendar is participating in this 30 Days of Dead every year. it's also the only time of the year that I plug in my thumb drive and listen to all the selections from previous years on shuffle. good way to catch repeats too (no repeats yet this year lol). have fun everyone and have a grateful day/month/year/life.
Great Month
I'll echo what Smallz said. I even wake up before my alarm and look forward to yesterday's answer, the new download, and playing the game. I've been playing since 2010 and have all the downloads and keep a spreadsheet of the dates and venues. They make fun compilations, where I "replay" the years and see if I can guess correctly.
I got on the bus at the University of Akron in 1985, and it still amazes me that some folks can take a listen to a selection like today's Candyman and post, "Easy-peasy. Got it on the first try." After a first go through with today's pick, I can definitely narrow down the era, but I'll need a few more listens to have a guess.
We're only four days in, but it seems like Dave had more multiple song releases in the past. These singletons make it tough. Ultimately for me, the search is the fun. Almost always I'm taken to a show that was not on my radar, and I mark it down for a full listen.
Have a great day everyone!
Edit: Looks like there were 23 multiple song selections in 2024, includeing a couple China>Riders. I knew it was a bunch, but didn't think it was that many.
Donna Jean
So sorry to hear that Donna Jean Godchaux has died. Lovely lady. Saw her once, as guest of Dead & Co. Her years with the GD is my personal favorite era. R.I.P. May the four winds blow her safely home
Weee hours of the mornin
I ditto the other early posters, I start my day around 3am in Nov to give myself enough time to hunt down the daily 30 before going to work. I give the song a once over listening to Jers voice, everyones guitar tone, keys and other tells, then I download it and focus in on what that days song has to tell me. My skills are no where near most as when I put my clues together I am running down every song of the era one by one til I hit the mark haha. Still honing the craft. Be Well You All
My first year participating; great picks so far!
Loved today’s pick. Lovely watery phaser solo and Jerry’s intro is delicate and lilting. I roughly had the era down right away but spent too much time in the later half of the previous year before I found the correct show.
Don't you just love these …
Don't you just love these "hints"? Lol. Maybe they should be called "Factoids," or "Trivia." But this one is definitely not a hint.
Nuggets
I love all the grate nuggets you find while searching and, sometimes, the special things that happened at the same show as the given tune. This is a fun one and double check your answer too!
Donna Jean
Just found out Donna Jean passed away!
RIP Donna!
"Thank You,for a real good time"....
Good memories!!!!
May the 4 winds blow her safely home
I always loved Donna's voice, may she rest in peace.
Opening Notes
After all these years, I still continue to find new stuff. I didn't realize that Jerry's opening notes, the main melody notes, were different in the earlier days. That was the difference that helped me find this one. Not long after this show, he changed it to what we are accustomed to now.
Tough one!
Went through the better part of a year!
Double checked a 2nd version to match speed better.
Cheers and good luck
Gem of a Candyman
Followed the hint and listened to a number of renditions of Candyman from that era; the opening notes from Jerry were the giveaway for me. What an excellent version of this truly iconic number from one of their greatest albums, and perhaps one of their most memorable performances.
Great Melody
Here today, Gone tomorrow.
This has always been a Great Song.
The end of 2025 near and two more band members as the fore winds blow will take them home. Remember our friends. Amen
30 Days of Dead 11/4
This year, so far, has been for the Ph.D's of Deadology. I went to shows from 73 - 95, and I could not tell you if/when Jer changed melodies or guitars. Musta been the roses, or the blotter. I never toured, just went to local shows and shows a reasonable driving distance. Unfortunately, I was too damn responsible, approving credit card applications. One of my many life regrets. I applaud you fans that can tell a show/era by some small change to a song. These one song excursions are a beast, at least for me. I got the first day, but since then I've been toast, and buttered. In the past, I have won a couple of calendars and a 7" single, but my plan now is to get back to the pipe and figure out todays song. That usually helps, but not this year. I'm glad to see Dave make this not as easy as last year.
General hint
Jer's voice changed timbre after his coma that will divide the 80's for you
Oh I'm such a Fool
not to have paid better attention to those opening notes!!
desending riff
That was my key-in as I listened to multiple versions until found it
candy man
1995,
fingers crossed!
got the date and location correct for yesterday! got my pick in earlier today, hoping for two in a row
Lesson Learned
Listen. Feel the song. Don't jump in right away. Let it get inside you before the searching begins.
Pass the whiskey 'round
Might take you some time to Look out, look out, for this Candyman.
If you have got the mind and the patience, you should be able to find the show.
Looking forward to David confirming which Candyman came to town today.
Good luck all! Happy hunting.
Ugh. Era known stuck
I’m pretty sure it’s Brent on the DX seven playing the roads Dino bells patch, have listened to about 30 shows still can’t find it so frustrating
Got a sweet tooth for this…
Got a sweet tooth for this version of Candyman. Top shelf stuff. Much obliged Dave. Now
I must check out the rest of the show.
Wrong state
Got the date right for this awesome Candy Man (after so much searching) - but noticed after I entered that the venue on Relisten is wrong. Did I see somewhere that date counts more than location? Either way happy to find it, and now have such a deeper appreciation for that beautiful opening riff
yuuuup
As if its not hard enough to find the year and the date we also need to decide which stated location is true :-D. All part of the fun
Wrong Venue
Are they Pranksters? Today the venue on Relisten is correct! I did the same as you yesterday, so today double checked the archive to be sure there was no error.
Vox Pan Time
Never heard that before after the solo til the end.
Late Starts
It's late PM in the Chicago area and I'm just getting started. I wish I could get up like some of the folks here but no chance of that. In any case, it's not the place but those first1970 Candymanz are just lovely.
early bed time.
I have to give up again, two nights in a row. how unlike me. I look forward to finding out if it's a show I missed, or a show i listened to but didn't think it was a match. I'm sure I have the right 2 year span, though.
Gotta be that era...
Knew it had to be part of one year or the next. The feel they have in the intro and a diff way of hitting those first few notes n phrases there. Took about 5-6 tries. Enjoy!
Made it
I was thinking I'd not succeed tonight but finally got there again with the assist at the end,
Does anyone else lose the options to make your guess as soon as you start to make comments?
@Bundubush...re submitting your entry
There's nowhere to enter your answer ON the Comments page. You have to be on the main 30 DoD page.
Go to the main page, scroll down, down, down below the song name, Comments, Related Products, etc, that's where you'll find the boxes to enter your answer.
Hope this helps!
DotD Answers
Are daily winners based on who submits the correct answer first? I've hit 4/4 correct answers thus far and gotten goose eggs from TPTB.
Winners
I have no idea how a winner in chosen on a day to day, not even sure how many entries there are to be honest. I have been playin for years and am right 9 times out of 10 and have never won anything but a good time and lots of amazing music
Winners
I'm glad that I'm not the only one wondering how winners are being decided.
Dang It
I figure that Me and My Uncle followed Candyman, from the symbols at the end. I was off on the year though.
April Fool's
I was at this one in the 8th row and have photos of the opening Promised Land with all the guys on each other's instruments. Was a great way to kick-off a fun night. I miss the gritty old Capitol in Passaic NJ... not to be confused with the venue in Portchester NY that was rebirthed and going strong!
