Days Of Dead

Friend Of The Devil
Hint:
A song that featured a very different arrangement when the Dead came back in 1976, perhaps inspired by how fancy free and footloose the Dead were feeling…

San Francisco, CA, Fillmore West
Debuted in 1970, Friend Of The Devil was played in its quick, American Beauty arrangement until 1974. When the Dead resumed touring in 1976, they played it in a slower tempo, apparently inspired by Kenny Loggins' version of the song.

The timing alone tells us it's not the comeback-era rearrangement before we even listen to it. Footloose and fancy free? That's how I would describe early versions (such as this), not the slowed-down '76 and beyond versions.

I find it interesting that after playing FOTD several dozen times in its debut year, they didn't play it at all the following year.

Another very happy birthday to LeeBob!

So, first, let me just say that I love 30 Days, as I am sure everyone here does. I don't usually play along, but I listen and DL the songs every year. For that, I want to say thank you, Dead.net team!

Now, one thing that has always confused me about the whole thing though is why the hints are usually about the song, not about the era/date/venue that we are supposed to guess. I mean, every "hint" so far this year has been about the song specifically, but even if we were supposed to be guessing the song (which would be incredibly easy,) the title of the song is listed directly below the hint. The way it is, these are not really hints at all... Just wondering what the thinking is there.

Peace

1st guess wasn't really...
reminded me of Henry Kaiser's 'Those Who Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It'.

I hope I ain't giving too much away here, but this was a download from a previous year's 30 Days.
I guess even for the GD, there's only so much music they put out there.

Really sweet version of this classic song, but yeah it's not a new release. We've been getting repeats for years, but this is the first time a song has appeared for the THIRD time. We received this FOTD in 2011 (albeit followed by Candyman), then again in 2017.

Yet...
Well, third time's a charm I guess.
For those seeking something truly unique, check out the recording of a show at the same venue a few months before this one - there's a real surprise tucked into the electric set.
Yee haw!

Those drums are so clear and sweet. It took some time but in the end I got it and now my reward is to listen to the rest of the show. Maybe one day I'll get a prize but digging up loads of them with each search. Thanks for that!!!
