Days Of Dead

Friend Of The Devil
Hint:
One of the few songs in the Dead's repertoire that underwent quite a dramatic change in arrangement after a few years

Passaic, NJ, Capitol Theatre
"Friend Of The Devil" was played in its faster paced arrangement 1970-1974, but when the Grateful Dead returned to touring in June 1976, they brought "Friend Of The Devil" in a much slower arrangement.

FWB: Well played!
5 for 5 so far.
Going for 30-30.
Would not be upset if we get some uncirculated rehearsal / studio session or live nugget that breaks the streak this year.

Here's a helpful hint: don't read the comments section before you search for the song unless you're getting desperate and looking for some help. If you're fishing for clues before you really start, is that even trying?

Listen to this song all the way through to hear the biggest clue for today and avoid having to listen to all 60+ early Brent versions of FOTD.

well, got off track and spent the night listening to he's gone. fortunately got nothing to do tomorrow. except finish looking for this friend. maybe do he's gone for next. i know it's been around before but so many good versions. i'm ready

scrolling down to see 'yesterday's winner' passes right by the usual inane collection of comments. never deemed it necessary to 'fish for clues' from any of them..got my system and i'm stickin' to it... and it's worked every time...

Took a little searching, but the sound of this particular year is very distinct. Can't fool me, Dave!

Even obvious ones especially for songs like this. Tried to figure out espan27 hometown and came up with Vail CO but its not a CO show. Oh well.

Combed through 3 years worth of FOTD and I ain't there yet. Better take a break before I go cuckoo.

The hint that was the clincher for me was to listen to the track all the way to the end. One normally would do that anyway, but it works here. I'm not kidding either. :-)

P.S. Are those bikes? Oh yes, they are... :-)

I have been wrong so many times over the years, I am well below the Mendoza line, probably because I end up drifting & dreaming.

I am out of tune today. I've gone through 8 years worth and I'm... well, I'm embarrassed. Just not hearing it.

Took me a while today since I started mid-decade.....but as they say, you always FIND it in the last place you look :)

Of The Devil is slippery and hard to get your hands on, but persistence paid out in the end for me. Phil's bass notes knocked me out on this one! Not to mention a really strong ending as well. Here's to more Dead times ahead!

Completely humiliated. Listened to every Brent era version. Time to call the men in the white suits to take me away. Argh!

Going to listen to Big Steve on Sirius. He's always good for a vibes cleansing.

Finally. Just in time for Big Steve. What a fool I had been.

If my sources are correct, over 30 years of playing live, the date from which this FOTD is culled, was a date the band played 12 different years, covering 8 different states, and 4 different line-ups. This particular show has a unique event that occurred to which I never knew before today. Another hidden gem.

Right down the middle of the whole thing. Got this one on my first choice. All about getting the era. Quality of JG voice pointed me right to this year.

I just might find some sleep tonight if the Packers beat the Niners.... Very clean cool version of FOTD! Lovin' the 30 Days! Thanks again for sharing the music. Wish it could be 365 Days of Dead!

I was a year off (favorite year bias) and just had to rewind. Just gotta listen to the music play. Surprised even Bobby though! High quality - crispy versions of FOTD during this period and previous live releases. Thanks to the GD team for sharing and bringing the music forward for all. What a fabulous way to really tighten the shoelaces around the history of the band and song. Heart.

He used that opening riff for a while but only one year mostly. That and Jerry's vocal condition should help. Now I need to find some sleep.

Someone else called it and I keyed in on the same distinct sound starting with Jerry's voice.

Yeah, that seems an odd description for an outlaw song but, man, Jer's guitar just after the 4 min. mark floats up with such grace and beauty - just a perfect balm for the soul as we endure these days of anxiety. Took me too long to find this (somehow I dismissed it the first time through and went way off) but worth it - so many choice versions during this period. Thanks again to Dave for another gem.
