Excellent Victim here!! I was lucky to catch a couple Victim seeing shows in the 90's. It bummed a lot of folks, but i dug it, even the studio version.I really liked the extended drum intro, especially to open second sets.

I have spent longer on this than any time in my history in 30 DoD. Still cant find it. It's a very unique Victim as the lead into the song is so mellow. It's a rocking version and Mickey's Beam work near the end is super powerful. Fricken Unicorn. Good luck you all.

turned that into a way longer search than it had to be. but enjoyed the ride and had the time to get lost in the archives so why not. anyway, nailed it down with a little patience and duh. this song could either be white bread or what the f is happening? this was a really good one of those. Dave keeps pulling out the nuggets, even after all this time. repeats or not, we're in for a fun month. that being said, there will come a time if this keeps going on like this, that we will one day reach critical mass and everything will have been used already. fortunately that probably wont be for a long while.

i let the tape roll and ended up listening to the whole show. most enjoyable. came back to let you know.

Took some serious patience for me today.
Must I choose to lose or win after listening to 30+ Victims..

HINT- the intro to a song is often tracked as the end of the previous song, so if you’re just going to RELISTEN and clicking on VICTIM for a certain show you may be missing out. The intro to today’s selection is what it’s all about…

This date has appeared twice before in 30DoD, and the final answers for venue name were not consistent between the two. I always check to choose the same one they did the past, but this time it was a toss up. I suspect either will be accepted.

Love that pretty Terrapin>Sailor>Saint sequence from yesterday! The show from STL 12-9-1979 is great also with a Terrapin>Sailor>Saint section. Today's was definitely more of an effort to find a match for this Victim Or The Crime, but I think I nailed it down. That lead-up "intro" is unique and makes it easy to eliminate ones that start with some sort of percussion intro, and there are many! Fun challenging search today! Great segment in here today where the drums mostly drop out and things turn ethereal with synth/cymbal flares going off at different times.

Every year I seem to get at least one track on the first guess. It's just luck, but it always amazes me. This was the track this year. Also, this date has appeared twice before in 30DoD, and the venue identified as the answer was 2 of the 3 names available. So the final answers are not consistent. I suspect both will be considered a win.

Given I don't really care for this song I got lucky to find it in about a dozen tries. Guessed right about the era. Did get to hear some interesting stuff though. Never realized this song could be the "Space" segment of a show all by itself!
Cheers

This song took a while for me to warm up to back in the day, but after seeing it live a few times it clicked. This version is smokin fer sure. Headin to a double shift, I will hunker down later tonight and start the hunt.

Today's search almost claimed another victim, but I just had to poke around a little longer. Probably passed over it a few times before finally coming around for the landing. Came across a sweet Scarlet->Victim->Fire along the way. Didn't hear another Victim quite like this one with the beam attack!

Took a walk around the field then the park.... Last semester Mr. Lemieux said, VOC was played when Grateful Dead met with head of "said record label".…. Interesting, fun times and definitely a niche song that will stick out like a sore thumb if don't know the difference! Thanks Dave. I hope you're great! #NFA qj

I hear dragons and all kinds of ghostly spectres in this one. Seems like the band really put all they had into this version, adding a new level of foreboding darkness to this already dark tune. Which makes me love it all the more. To paraphrase the late, grate Bob Ross, you can't truly appreciate the light without the dark.

As a side note, if you have access to a copy of David Dodd's book "The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics," he provides some interesting commentary from Gerrit Graham regarding his and other band members thoughts about some of his lyric choices. Particularly the "junkie" reference. Weir even used "bunny" in place of "junkie" in one performance to appease those who may have been offended. Hilarious. And don't forget, like the song says, you must choose to lose or win.

The knuckle slam keyboard stabs right after the song ends clue you in to this show. And the little ding-ding bell like notes in the tune up lead in segment. Friends at school made a trip for this run. Always enjoyed the tapes. They did not often pop up on peoples lists that I would see in the years after. Overshadowed by the other highlights of this year maybe. Some gems in this run.

It't the ones that you think are going to be easy that you end up going down multiple rabbit holes. I went in one direction and then another and then took a break and came back and finally got it. Am I the driver or the driven?

Hey everybody! I'm back! I missed last year because I was depressed by the election and I almost missed this year just by forgettin' but I stumbled upon it today and I am psyched to get back in the 30 Days Groove. I got this one today but I had to do a little searchin' and thinkin' and I found it based largely on a technicality but whatever it takes...

Big WELCOME BACK to The Fool. Glad your feeling better and ready to engage in some musical trivia. GD music therapy has always been good medicine when I'm feeling down. Maybe Lemieux will offer up a Foolish Heart in you honor.

"You don't just listen to the music of The Dead, you experience it."- Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux
Today I experienced Grateful Slog, the act of being grateful for the opportunity to slog through many, many, many versions of a song that not only did I not love, but one that got stuck in my head all day, and in the end, I am glad for it. Bring it on Mr. Lemieux.

When is the hint a hint? And how the heck did the band get into this insanely dark version from the preceding song and, even more unlikely, the following song?
That was some crazy concert! Man, shoulda been there.

I found it early early early this morning (I wake up at 4a) Worked all day, now I come home and Forgot which show it was!! Luckily, I entered it in as soon as I found it this morning; however I must have closed the right show's page, as all I had left open in browser tabs were the wrong shows. Now I'll have to wait til tomorrow to listen to the rest of the show as intended.

Whew! Did I just listen to 35 different VOTC renditions before finding the one for today's selection? And boy oh boy did all 35 of those different renditions have something unique and exhilerating to offer. Yet by the 20th or so version the search was starting to drag on my patience and I found myself increasingly pulled into the lyrics of the song! (Perhaps that was DL's intent? *evil genius*)

TBH this was not one of my more favorite Grateful Dead songs from the later Brent era, but after it was featured on SXM for a time following the "Today in Grateful Dead History" segment, it grew on me, and now I count it among my favorite Bobby songs from that era.

David Lemieux, it is pleasure to take these rides along your archival mastery.

Bobby played VOtC at a solo gig and prefaced it by saying it was one of his favorite songs. Gave them a new avenue to get weird, some absolute gems with some >’s into another great tune from the era. Say what you will, but ‘late era’ Grateful Dead was fierce and powerful, often masterful even.

I saw live versions 2 and 3, among others, but it was many years later, long after Jerry died,, that I really came to appreciate this song. This is a fine version - the meltdown sounded familiar to me and lo and behold when I checked it was in fact from 2/27/90 and was featured in Taper's Section back in October and I had commented on it then. Thanks Dave!

If you liked yesterday's dark VOTC, check out the version from 10/26/89. Was my first show and that version brought me to my knees. I'd never heard anything like it. Needless to say, The bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began. Thank you Dave for this trip to never, never land
