Days Of Dead

Bird Song

A Garcia-Hunter classic that had a seven year hiatus, but then returned for the final 15 years. This version is from near its debut

The first Bird Song by the Dead was played in February 1971, and it was in and out of the repertoire until September 1973, when it was dropped seemingly for good. It returned in September 1980 as part of the acoustic sets that year, and then seamlessly merged into the electric sets

    Super crisp recording

just a baby chick jam at this early stage, but love how clear and distinct the instruments are in this recording

Switched site, thanks for the heads up!

Man I love this tune. There seems to be a small pocket of Bird Songs like this where they slowed it down from earlier versions, spaced it out a bit more making it longer before the opening guitar change/addition which is completely different on later versions the following year - or maybe I've just listened to too many versions - but THANKS for the heads up - poked around elsewhere and there it was, synced up beautifully, and a show on my birthday no less.

Yep, I saw that, too. And I remember it happening another time here, too.
As for repeats, 3 of the past 9 days were repeats from other 30 DoD years. Ah, well. Those deja vus sometime make for a short search.

Mornin', rockers!!

Day off here due to a certain small named rain storm. I'll take it...........

Repeats already? And ten days in, still no sign of a certain Mr Pen. Just sayin'..........

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.......

Rock on,

this is the one i'm glad i didn't get last night with only 90 minutes togo. 2 hours in and i still haven't found it yet. these are the 30 days i remember. it's gotta be right there, despite i think the intro trying to throw me off, but Jerry gives a pretty big clue early on. but i still haven't found it. at least i've still got time tomorrow.
edit--aha just read Dave's clue so i know im not going crazy.

I, too, listed yesterday as The Oakland Coliseum Arena for the same reason since it was listed that way in 2018. We always manage to have this happen at least once a year. But in my mind we still are correct in our answers regardless.

It is also how this site, dead.net, lists the venue. Not sure why I should expect consistency, though. ;)

Above my tv on the wall is Jerry's last time playing this "Birdsong", 6/30/95 photographed by Robbi Cohen-- this is a solid answer as Jerry had many many moments since this song debut to where the lyrics, in this particular version, on day 10, make a significant difference-- thank you for some east coast love dave #deadheadlife

It all melts into one ... I can't recall the year but this selection reminds me of the year when so many selections had key points of feedback that helped some of us zero in on our targets.

It hasn't happened yet but I am expecting the annual stumper soon; one which is essentially impossible to find. Happy to have gotten todays nice slow selection ... a real beauty! Now I can sit down to work and just enjoy the show.

Today's "Bird Song" was a good one – very laid back for this era.

Had me searching like Obi Wan for Kamino. It should be right...there? I was thrown off by an asterik. And here I was thinking I was smart with my CTRL+F search terms...

Prime example of why to reference multiple sources, depending upon which one you start with and where, and you might have known this rose by another name in the past depending upon how long you've played the game.

I went with the long venue name based on the 2018 download in the Excel Spreadsheet provided previously by moribundjt. Will you be providing an updated list this year? Some folks have mentioned in the past that they will take either one as a correct answer but I don't know how anyone would know that for sure.

Is there an archived listing of previous years 30 Days? I'm looking for venue and date information for 2010-2018. I have the files but not venue info.

In the past, someone here has offered up an updated excel file at the end of the month. Hopefully, we'll get an update this year too.

Yeah, that is "moribundjt" who keeps the spreadsheet going. It comes in handy! You can PM him to see about getting a copy.

This makes 10 Bird Songs for the 12 years. Only '15 and '19 had none. A bit of a tough search today!

kept me going while tracking this tricky little critter. When I finally treed it, I was quite surprised to learn this particular show occurred on the day I commenced my 4th circle around the sun. And belated as it was, it was still a very nice birthday gift indeed!

Really a sparse version but quite enjoyable, as was some of the stage banter.

Many thanks as always, and looking forward to tomorrow's gift.

Hello rcambere,

google deaddisc dot com, they have a section on 30 days of dead

It seems to have a mix of venue info and just city names but cross-referencing with the archive might help...

That was brutal! Thanks to Jay_Dogg and moribundjt for the hint about references. I had listened to every Bird Song in that era (I thought). Turns out this was the one that was missing from certain sources.

7-1-2 for this year. first loss and second couldn’t find.
was getting psyched with my new routine methods and double checks.
that’s why nobody does it the way they do
there is always another way.
and…..never ever ever……no matter what…..trust a prankster.

... got that year right away. Then tried one end of the street. Then another. 2nd try. What a journey this song had! Guitar tone changes, singers, keys, middle instrumental sections, endings. So different. I like the ones from the year we looked at yesterday especially.

Ok, so Dead Base 50 failed me today, as did set lists. Found it blindly poking through the archive after I donated earlier today. Karma? We'll see, if I win the calendar. But, like a dope I failed to look in my SHNs where it was sitting all the time, especially since the month and year was a cinch.

listened to all the birds in the obvious year over and over, audio definitely cleaner on the version posted on this site. Had to step away for a few hours, check older deadbase sources and found the sucker that stuck out. not convinced but pretty sure i got it and remain 10 for 10.
