... for 8 or 9 years. I don't remember what drew me to it in the first place. I think I may have just stumbled across it while searching archive.org for a copy of another show in the same era.
That "hint" is actually a little bit useful.
Smile smile smile. Knew exactly where to start on this one and was only a few shows off. Really was expecting something more tedious to hunt for. These are still fun though. This is my first year participating. In past years it’s slipped by at least half way through the month before I realized it was going on.
The biggest take away I get from doing these is that there is great material all throughout the 30 years the Grateful Dead performed. No matter what era you prefer you can’t rule out ANY show to offer something wonderful. Although Jerry died when I was 7 and I missed that experience first hand, I’ve lived vicariously through the music for about the last 20 years of my life. Some days their music is the only thing I feel I can relate to. As a young Father who’s on the road 4-5 nights a week hauling items truckin’ up and down the east coast, it takes a toll mentally. The Grateful Dead is something I can look forward to daily wether it’s on Sirius or a show I pick randomly from the archive, there’s magic in ALL of it. The community as a whole has always felt like family. That’s what it’s all about, Strangers stopping Strangers. Except when we (deadheads) stop or pass each other by as we keep running on the wheel of life, for a brief moment, there’s an unspoken understanding. Those priceless moments don’t happen often enough, but I’m thankful it happens. Just felt like sharing in this time of thanks that I’m grateful to be a part of something that’s real.
“So many roads I tell you. New York to San Francisco. All I want is one to take me home.”
Right on, bro
Found today's on the 3rd try.
3rd pick exactly
Seeing today's offering gave me some sweaty palpitations knowing how common a combo this was. Listening to it narrowed the range considerably, and Bob's windy intro made it a quick job. Now listening to the whole show and having more deja vu ;)
What a fun listen that was, thanks David!
13th time is the charm -- and there's a Dead giveaway on this one, so to speak
when i marked off all the he's gone in deadbase that had 01 after it, then it became much more manageable than i thought.
it was a nice interlude between 74 and 78....
kept on truckin 1 at a time and eureka their it was.
Have a much more relaxed approach this year. Am just enjoying the new versions of old favorites, and am more apt to heading down a rabbit hole than worrying about getting it right. Didnt effect my performance at all. Am at the same approx. 60% as every year.
thanks to all comments that inspire more explorations.
Just really wish we did not have to worry about all the copyrights as we r cut out of so many great moments.
I needed an easier one today because I'm getting married tonight and still have a few things to take care of! BTW, I'm representing my fandom and our community with a 13-point lightning bolt and matching pocket square. Invitations had roses and the quote, How sweet it is to be loved by you on them. The site's being wonky today and took away my fancier post and even accused me of trying to enter more than once but it's all good - I love everyone today!
I don't know you, but I think I speak for all the Heads when I say we wish you and your lovely bride all the happiness in the world. After tonight, you all have nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!
A great day! My wife and I gave out GD pint glasses as one of the 2 guest gifts at our wedding 7 yrs ago. They came in 4 different designs, each representing a famous show in the history w/cool artwork. They were a hot item... none left to take home. Everyone snagged them up and I thought good for them. Enjoy
Looking at the set list and how well played these two are, this sounds worthy of a release Dave. Loved Jerry's touch on the vibrato in He's Gone. I only use my ears and the DeadbaseX without using the Archive or doing side by side comparisons so this one was easy.
Edit:Thanks evergrateful, that may explain why it looks like 18 posts or 500 something as well. And why my edited post moved up in the comments instead of staying where it was. I'll bet the day I put in two entries one was logged in and the other was not.
Jay: ... like a diesel train, better not be there when it rolls over.... TLEO!
Hey there! Saw your previous post about not being able to load today's Day 13 page. FYI, I had the same problem at midnight and when I woke up this morning, too. But once I logged on to my dead.net account it showed up. Weird glitch! Sure would be a drag for folks who play without having an account. It seems to be loading correctly now, logged in or not. Anyway, glad you made it thru!!
@1stshow70878 Dave released one of these nights already (don't want to say too much to give it away), but now that I'm listening to this show, I would have loved to see this whole run released as a set. I'm listening to the song that comes right before today's pick, and it is great!
Great version of "Minglewood" from yesterday's 1984-04-21 Philadelphia show.
Because of Jerry's voice, I shy away from 84-86 but yesterday's show was fantastic, especially that second set. Love Brent's synth in this era...
maybe headed for "Cold iron shackles and a ball and chain"...;)
I was caught on a limb for a moment or two…….
Best wishes Jay Dogg 76! 🎉🥳🎉
30 Days of Dead is always a great way to get me to listen to some shows more attentively. I've heard hundreds of versions of He's Gone, but this particular one is frickin beautiful. Especially the ending where the guitar & keyboards sound like they were sprinkled with fairy dust. Every November, Dave gets us to poke around. And we get to download these tunes to boot. It's a wonderful thing.
Went off the rails yesterday, but back on track today!
Reached to higher heights today with this He's Gone...simply beautiful...and best wishes to Jay Dogg 76!
As Cosmic Charlie stated so well earlier, it feels like we are all one big happy family thanks to this music and the community we built upon it!
from the track before this clip all the way through the jam after and the next track as well. I should give this whole show a listen.
Great weekend of shows, and literally a five minute walk from our house at 45th and Pine… copped front-row seats from some Main line hotel concierge for two of the three nights… three weeks later graduated from Penn in the same building, but, of course, my head was in a much different place! And if Margaret Kilfeather is watching, “hey now”
Now that's deadication. To play the game on your wedding day. Congratulations. Real deadication will be if you have the energy to play tomorrow.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. It has everything a 30DaysOfDeadhead enjoys. From the incredible musicianship to the entertaining commentary to the uncannily similar sounding alternate versions out there for us to discern the correct answer from, and finally to the incredibly clear acoustics this version and venue provide. Big thanks for this treat.
Also, if you're wondering who "He" and "The Other One" are referring to in these tracks...........
me too.(I have a pretty good idea, but the timing is strange).
This era and the next 2 years or so have some really nice sounds for vocals, keyboards and clarity especially when they take things down like the outro of He's Gone here. And then they really bring it back UP! Dynamics. Great couple of months in this particular year incl this month, 1 before this and 1 after. That clicking/tapping sound in the outro jams during this year... love that bubbling stew they did
thanks, Dave, for another stunning selection.
i also am joining the family congratulations to Jay Dogg. with 26 years happily married, i can tell you that you're embarking on a wonderful journey together. wishing you both a long lifetime of love and peace.
Ya as others have mentioned, the dead dot net site here is a bit strange with posts/comments and their display.
And being able to view the song of the current day will depend on what exact page you are on.
And I suspect the page you are viewing, cookies, refreshing or not could have effects on seeing that false positive "You have already entered today..." problem but that will depend on each person's device, browser, settings etc...
Best tip I can offer is to jump into each new day by viewing the basic page at
dead dot net 30daysofdead
which is a url with nothing after it, no slash and dates, extra stuff at end etc.
That url will or should show you the current day's song (Depending on when they switch over in the wee hours and time zone maybe?? not sure, try refreshing etc). From that url you should be able to offer your guess for the current day's song. That "main page" url should give you the ability to see the past days' songs by scrolling all the way down then you can click on each red number of past dates.
If you want to see comments in a way that makes sense for the current day's song however, you have to click on the red song title on the main page (above the music player box). Then I would recommend setting the comments section "Items Displayed" drop down to ALL.
If you click on one of those red numbered dates on the main page to see past dates it should bring you into that date's comment section (no need to click on the song title).
If problems happen then there's always the option of clearing cookies, logging out & back in etc.
Sorry for the long post!
even for us "old" and "seasoned" vets of the game. I know I learned something new. The dead dot net site baffles my mind sometimes, but I learn more each year and am definitely better equipped to navigate it after today. THANKS! dougbr1ne for your "long post."
Thanks for being my mentor…🥰
You play the game better than I do. Thanks to everyone who plays this game!
Ramble on Katie!
The song stops every time I hit the submit my entry button. Not cool phone not cool! Damn technology, let’s mitigate this dead.net
I got up this morning had a quick listen and then very fittingly had to drive down to the loop in Chicago for funeral. He's Gone Indeed and this version is slow and lovely. Turns out it was the perfect fit for day. I came home, picked my year and for the first time after many years of playing this game found it on my first try.
Now I'll settle in to just listen without a big hunt. We said goodbye today to the last of a trio of my fathers closest friends. and nothings gonna bring him back.
Saw 5 of the last 6 shows at this venue (that's rumored to reopen someday after being shuttered since '81.) First shows I ever taped, tapes long lost.
Seems the circle of life is in full swing to day.
Small wheel turn by the fire and rod,
Big wheel turning by the grace of God,
Every time that wheel turn 'round,
Bound to cover just a little more ground.
So many great versions over the years. After finding correct show, wandered on through time. Great way to spend a Saturday.
Bundubush, we share your sadness, and glad you have family at this time.
