A couple good points. BT Wind was revived during the Spring ‘90 tour with a whole new batch of words, was shelved for the summer, and came back with most of its original stanzas on the September tour.

As for Bobby’s acoustic additions, I believe that began during Summer of ‘94.

This is one of the best I've ever heard, super intense indeed! Gotta be a set closer with the "Day Job" paring, only question I have is was it a 1st or 2nd set ender?

Daddy may drive a V-8 'vet
Mama may bathe in champagne yet
God bless the child with his own stash
Nine to five and a place to crash

Ring that bell for whatever it's worth
When Monday comes, don't forget about work
By now you know that face on your dollar
Got a thumb to its nose and a hand on your collar

The song was written out of frustration with some fans who had dropped out of society and were, in Hunter's view, simply living a long party without ambition

I didn't know about that bit of resentment he had for certain folks in the scene. Let alone the song "Day Job" being about them but it makes sense. My ignorance foremost being for I was a child during the era & my folks weren't Heads. That said as I grew older and met more Heads with stories of the times, as with just getting wiser in life myself,... I've had my suspicions, as with the lyrics to "Touch of Grey" & what they all represent. Besides what seems like an intervention of sorts with the 'lists out' in the early verses.

Back to Jack real quick,.. The pick of the day was so impressive I had to find it, & did. I must say the only version I've heard almost as good as today's with such a huge intensive jam at the end crescendo was the one from Dave's Picks #40 at Deer Creek.

I usually if not always wanted to watch and listen to the band during live shows, to catch the interactions between the band members, those unspoken communications, nods, Jerry pushing his glasses back up his nose, Bobby turning to the drummers, Phil giving an approving nod to Jerry and lighting up a bass line, or Brent turning to Jerry looking for that space between the notes. 1st set closers such as DJ were a fun time to run to the halls and join in with the full on hippie dancing, twirling, hand shaking, spinning.

Today's another gimme but I like the songs so I can't wait to listen. Jack Straw may be my favorite Dead song of all (except for all those other ones...) and unlike a lot of people I like Day Job!

I saw a pair of awesome shows at that venue but I also had a traumatic run-in with their nasty-ass A-Team security which culminated with me giving a judge the finger right in his face and him letting me get away with it because he could see that the A-Team was a bunch of lying scumbag ex-Marines on steroids.

This one was pretty much a gimme as I said previously -- BUT not quite as much of a gimme as I thought! Mind your p's and q's and make sure you undot those i's and uncross those t's! Is it digital or is it analog?

I actually would prefer a Day Job 1st set closer over a Deal. I know that sounds crazy to some, but I absolutely love this tune. Underrated.

There are only 2 shows with this combo and one person was questioning some ambiguity of the venue name. One of the 2 venues definitely does not have multiple names and I don't see that the other one does either. Either way, another lob from Dave!

They really did give us some nice treats this year so far. I have not had this many instant bullseye first tries in a while. But they used to have "unknown rehearsal" "EAC Jam" etc pop up in the past, those were fun for really scouring the depths of the 'net. Great lead guitar playing on this Jack Straw!

For some reason I remember writing the digits of this EXACT date for this year and the next on the top of notebook paper in high school. Can still hear the digits in my head as I write them.. heh. Just stuck in the memory.

firstly, i too love this song, a nice bouncy Jerry riff and the tongue in cheek lyrics.

secondly, there is no documentation anywhere to prove this ugly rumor that the words were aimed at tour heads.
David Dodd's Annotated Lyrics says this:
Hunter, in his 'A Box of Rain', notes that "this song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repetoire at the request of fans. Seriously."
also, the song is listed as Keep Your Day Job.

thirdly, i have always thought that this song instead is aimed at the band themselves, as the title phrase was historically used in show business in general, and specifically for musicians. there's lots of examples of this going back to the 1940s.

I don't pretend to know the back story of every tune but being a want to be musician (especially when I was younger and had the dream of stardom) Keeping your day job til the night job pays is exactly that, until you are making enough money gigging, keep your day job. It does sound like a strange thing to say to a traveling head as the day job would be hustling in the lot and the night job would be enjoying the show...before hustling in the lot after the show.

For some reason, Jerrybase doesn't list Keep Your Day Job. It has never let me down before.

Will have time today to relax a bit and take in the whole show. Thinking of changing my user name here. It's a relic from working in Sierra Leone during the civil war and maybe a bit untoward if the anyone knows Creolese. Something may need to change in order to lock in a lucky win some dy.

Jack Straw was in the repertoire since October 1971, aside from 1975 and 1976, and its appearance was always welcome. Day Job was only around 1982-1986, and although it wasn't held in quite as high regard as Jack Straw, history has shown this little ditty could really rock, and Jerry always sounded like he was having fun singing it.
