Days Of Dead

Estimated Prophet>Crazy Fingers

By 1988, "Estimated Prophet" quite reliably went into "Eyes Of The World" or "He's Gone," or occasionally Terrapin Station. This version, from the Dead's final SPAC appearance, went into "Crazy Fingers" and caught us all off guard.

Agreed - why? Bobby should have listened to his own exclamations. Jerry's voice on Crazy Fingers was a bit painful too. Thankfully his continuously meandering guitar and the beautiful, sometimes almost Latin tinged variations make this combo (in reverse to the usual) a treat. Damn cookin' start to this show as well!

Woke up to the answer, sometimes you just gotta surrender to the music and enjoy. Spent the weekend listening to The Other One and lots of ‘69/‘70 yesterday! 30 DoD really is a treat, a yearly listening workout sharpen those ears up for winter!

I love Bobby going off on Estimated. I look forward to hearing him freak out. I want more of it every time. Let me guess: you don't like Donna's screaming either? What a fresh hot take.

I'm always crazy for a Crazy Fingers! Some of Hunter's finest lyrics imho. Here the singers twist those beautiful words up at the end, but the outro jam is beautifully crazy and wonderful. I definitely haven't listened enough to this year.
Happy Monday Deadheads!

Every year there are screams for Pigpen and rightly so. The problem is half his repertoire is covers and you can't give away other peoples music, is the basic gist of it as I understand it. However that leaves these songs:

Tastebud
Alligator
Caution
Easy Wind (Hunter composition sung by Pig)
Operator
Mr. Charlie
The Stranger
Chinatown Shuffle

Bonus points: What other song from the Dead's repertoire is credited to Hunter only.

Would guess (without looking it up) that you’re talking EMPTY PAGES, only performed once, or maybe twice- was recently reading a lot about the Gaelic Park show where it was played

This show did have a great setlist. I love any show where they did more than one Dylan cover. Speaking of Bob, I'll be seeing him perform tonight. Can't wait to see him again. I love those new songs from Rough & Rowdy Ways.

and I've never heard this song. Listening to it right now. Thought I had been there, done that but here I am listening to some song I never heard the Dead play before. Hard to believe. I kinda like it. Not a Hunter composition, it's a pig composition.

So I'll add that to the list of allowed Pig tunes:

Tastebud
Alligator
Caution
Easy Wind (Hunter composition sung by Pig)
Empty Pages
Operator
Mr. Charlie
The Stranger
Chinatown Shuffle

Bonus points: What other song from the Dead's repertoire is credited to Hunter only.

Fun easy one today. I'll have to listen to the rest of the show as well. Looks like even more fun than this 2 song journey. Yes Amazing Ace said... the undocumented impossible -ish studio rehearsal or sound check is coming any day now to throw off the streak

11/15/1971 - 11/15 2021 Same month, same date, same day of the week, now 50 years later. Austin Municipal Auditorium. Small "crowd" - Monday night venue? The Dead were already crankin' as my wife and I settled in halfway up the left side facing the band. Nobody within spitting distance which was nice. Music keeps getting better so we moved even closer to the front. Don't know all the songs by name but we like them just the same. One song had crescendo after crescendo after crescendo - outstanding! 'Bout this time, 2 rows up, the long hair with a cowbob hat (which we all had, Austin early 70's) started upchucking whatever he had ingested (Austin early 70's). My wife was 6 months pregnant and that killed the concert for her so we headed out. She leaned against some unopened seats and they proceeded to domino down all the way to the back of the auditorium. So we zippitydoodahed out before being ushered out. What a great night! (Just had to share.)

It Must've Been the Roses is also credited with words and music by Robert Hunter. Although I have a vague recollection about reading somewhere that Jerry suggested that he add the F#m chord to make it a bit more interesting to which he obliged.

Estimated/Fingers. Now we just need an Estimated/Nose followed by Estimated/Ears and we'll have all our bets covered.

And IMHO, Jerry can sing whatever words he wants or none at all. It takes nothing away from my enjoyment of it at all. That musical interplay led by Jerry during the last 2 or 3 minutes of Fingers was the cherry on top of my sundae.
Can't believe it's the 15th and we're halfway to the finish line already.

of bonus points for Dead Pondo.

Amended allowed Pig tunes, obscure they may be:

Alice D. Millionaire
You See A Broken Heart
Tastebud
Alligator
Caution
Easy Wind
Empty Pages
Operator
Mr. Charlie
The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion)
Chinatown Shuffle

Oh, and hints, its on a Tuesday.

Some magical moments in this pairing. Easy to find but pleased I listened right to the end. Some real nice downloads this year. But I've noticed that there's never been a Black Muddy River on 30 Days . . . Just an observation (with fingers crossed).

It occurred to me that once 30 DoD 2021 Edition comes to a close, we can listen almost daily to a 30 DoD offering starting with the 2010 Edition for December, 2011 for January, and so on, finishing with 2021 next October, spilling into the 2022 Edition next November. 330 free downloads from the vault. Something to crow about.

would make 360 downloads as of this Nov 30...plus two bonus from 2010, minus the repeats so about 345 previously unreleased tracks (a few of which subsequently were released on Dave's Picks). (Sadly I lost the files I started in 2011 keeping track of all songs by year plus a master list in chronological order in a hard drive crash....)

Hey, someone in these comments said they were hosting a list of all the previous years' downloads and that we just had to search by their screenname. Now, if only I could remember (their) name!

This show has the most epic version of Stella Blue I've ever heard. Simply thunderous ending... Im surprised that song has never been pulled out on 30 days yet.

re: Geododge, Badges? We don't need no stinking badges! (hints)

chuckle. Geo and the rest of the 30 DoD Usual Suspects rarely do.
