    Locating Mindbender

I can’t type this in directly (darn!), but if you want to hear yesterday's recording of Mindbender, type this in to get to the Taper's Section page & then click on the pink song titles.
dead (dot) net (back slash) features (back slash) tapers-section (back slash) february-26-march-4-2018

I found it starting with a jerrybase song search for Mindbender where I found 4 show dates and several deadessays entries. The 1966-01-07 show had a deadessay entry in its "Notes" titled, "1966 Show List," with info for 2/6/66 that led to the deadnet Taper's Section. Wish I could explain more clearly, but I'm crossing my fingers that even this won't be bumped. Hope this helps for anyone who was wondering how we found the answer yesterday.

Thanks for posting that, I had tracked and gotten the date from a February 2007 tapers section release but, at that time, the reel from the vault just was marked as 1966 and some of the other tunes were known to be from February
6th, 1966. That's how I got half of the answer. I had noted that the access no longer works for those taper section recordings. Damn this new policy about posts keep making have to edit and redo my posts!

Once again I guess I wasn't paying attention in 2019 for the 'Standing On The Corner > Mindbender.' Because the sources I knew at the time all said in was from May. I must've assumed I got it right and never checked or something. Because here's what I found the answer really was. Unknown Venue, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown - February 23rd, 1966. Is there an echo in here?

this morning i was reading comments and went to grateful dead essays for first time.
have been reading and digging for a while now and found out some absolutely amazing stuff about the early days.
wow, this treasure trove will take a while to go thru.
thanks everyone for teaching me how to dig deep.
found the mind bender from yesterday ( of course i already knew the answer) but was cool to see the path to enlightenment.
dave beware of your new name of confusions prince
thank you

Was going to tell you how I found Mindbender but I can’t. Short answer is I googled it. But today trying to retrace my footsteps I can’t see how I got to a recording of it on the Vimeo site. Confusion reigns.

...to Drew and everyone else who got yesterdays Mindbender. Don't know how you all did it!

Fortunately today's Cassidy/Jed looks like it will be pretty easy. Famous last words, right?

was typing in my entry and saw your comment which left me 100% sure
now we aren't going to have a venue debaucle today are we?

...am still deep in the essays reading clicking all over the place, am actually taking some notes to go back to places later, this will definitely cause very little to get done today. oh well i am retired.
thanks and peace

I loved this venue and was at most of these shows once upon a time. Quite a relief after straining and bending my brain on yesterday's search and coming ever so close. Now, I can sit, work and listen to this old show. BTW- at one of these shows a few years earlier I recall folks passing out reprints of the old acid test posters - blew my mind.

After the marathon search yesterday, today was a breeze! Congrats Drew from Brooklyn! Two venue choices in the Dropdown,, but it’s pretty obvious. I found ticket stubs from this show. The GDTS had the full name, the ticketron ticket has a third name, not in the dropdown.

A footnote: interesting mathematical aspect to today's selection.

...that it was this show. It ain't all commas and arrows out there, folks. I had it narrowed down to 5 possible shows to begin with, and there was something in the Jed that was a definitive marker. Take me back.

Great reverse engineering rewards if you just google minbender and 2/6/66 and dead, you will find abundant white rabbit holes and acid test info. Throw in lemieux as a search term too while you’re at it.

I had a 5 track Warlock demo way back, that I taped off the radio. During finals each semester, Harvard U. had a non-stop 'Harvard Orgy' (FM radio) so students could listen (and tape) into the wee small hours. I got some wonderful tapes from it and Mindbender was one of the demos. But this one is live. I wonder if Harvard still tolerates the Dead.

Well, do you know it's like I said, I really like this Cassidy into Tennessee Jed.
Nothing to tell now, let the challenge be yours, I’m done with mine.
Baby won't you carry me back to The 30 Days..
Good luck all!

Regarding yesterday's Mindbender conundrum. I consider myself a good listener, but I'm clearly not a good gooogler. I gave up in frustration last night(chose the 1/7/66 Matrix). I was able to find it this morning, but only after looking at all the hints provided by you good people. So a big THANK YOU for advancing my Deaducation, and thanks for the fun Dave.

Gratefully moving on to more fertile pastures today.

Search tricks for Google to secure and avoid results:

-Put quotes around a word or sequence of words that MUST come up in the search results. Careful, spelling counts. And careful, the more words added to the sequence will affect the results. And you have to use the actual quote mark. As in, do not just tap the apostrophe key twice (and never use that key way up in the upper left, that backwards apostrophe, a useless key for basic typing).

-Put a dash right before any word that you DO NOT want to come up in the search results. (Dash as in : minus sign , straight horizontal line, that key in between the zero "0" key and the equal sign "=" key or the one at top right corner of numeric keypad)

So entering a search query of:

"Cassidy" "Tennessee Jed"

...will get you less results than just both of those words with no quotes.

And entering:

"China Cat" -Doll

...will make sure the phrase "China Cat" will definitely be in the search results AND search results with the word "Doll" will be ignored

And there are many other helpful Google search tricks out there.

On day 23 of the 2019 30 Days of Dead, we got Standing on the Corner and Mindbender from 02/23/66. Does anyone know the venue? My copy of Deadbase does not list it.

My favorite game to play each year for a whole month! Every day when I log in to Dead.net it says you have not marked any shows as attended. How do I do that?

Search for your shows in the search bar in upper right. You can mark a show as attended on it's deadicated show page. Just click on the show pages that come up in your search.

I won that 2019 Standing on the Corner/Mindbender, and I won it using my DeadBase IX and used "Unknown Venue" as the venue, then got lucky in the daily drawing.........but I've never been able to find out with 100% certainty where it was recorded at. I remember that there was a lot of friendly banter/questions/disputes about the answer.

was close yesterday and chose the wrong one, did more research and immediately regretted my early entry. 100% positive for today though and a little fun trickery and mimicry from dave the almighty. great sounding tracks today

It really is fun and different listening to the synced pair playing. The matching version I found tended to play a little faster requiring some minor tweaking from time to time, but overall the listening experience was fantastic. I would hear a whooshing sound like a jet engine overhead when it was synced up xactly perfect(hope I'm not the only one hearing it). Wonder what causes that?

Feeling much better about my abilities today. Turns out I'm just bent, not broken.

Till tomorrow, happy listen/searching to all.

Yep, I most likely found that same recording. A tad fast. The effect you hear is pretty much the same idea of how different guitar effects pedals (and studio effects etc) like chorus, phaser, flanger pedals etc. work.

2 sounds occurring that are just a little out of time sync and/or speed and/or pitch or combos of those will get different effects. Swooshing, reverbing, echoing, and the like. Fun to experience that ! "Sound in a swooshing tunnel"

First show I looked at. Phil clued me in. Good sound. And something very familiar about the answer. 18 for 18! 2 of the first set greats here. From a fine year.

Deadbase 50 has a complete setlist for 2/6/66 shown in the Updates section at the beginning with Mindbender as one of the three songs listed. I was confident that this was the correct date and location for this song/show, but then I saw the hint about the dead essays page. It appears that this Mindbender was played on a Jam of the Week, but that is gone now. Finally, I went to dead.net's Taper's Section and had to dig down to page 49 for the week of FEBRUARY 26 - MARCH 04, 2018 where the entire set is posted: "Our first selection is the oldest live Grateful Dead music we have in the vault, from Los Angeles on 2/6/66, playing a batch of tunes from which only one would survive in the repertoire much past mid-1966 (BIODTL):Tastebud, Mindbender, One Kind Favor, BIODTL, The Only Time Is Now." This was the only way I could find this Taper's Section but if you want to hear the entire set, you'll have to dig deep.

I definitely know the Standing on Corner/Mindbender was not 5/19/66....Avalon Ballroom..........it was closed that day for re-painting of the bathrooms. Needed a couple days to dry before re-opening. The same crew that spruced-up the stalls at the Ballroom are the same crew that cleaned up CBGB's bathroom......or maybe it was Max's Kansas City.
