Hint
This was very nearly included on Skull & Roses in 1971, which would have been its definitive version. Instead, it was saved for a Jerry solo record.

Gonna get up in the morning and go
Well I've got no chance of losing this time. The version before this one is on the short list of my all-time favorites. I love it that Garcia started going for a second round of licks in his solos during this particular year. His solo here starts out a bit ragged but finishes strong.
Exciting stuff, Dave. Thanks for all you do for us Losers. Can we all be a winner today?
Loser
was listening to a version from a few nights earlier just this morning, so knew the era in a heartbeat. this is amateur night by comparison...
Bullseye
First show I tried, bingo. Set the search for one year based on sound of the recording, band instruments & overall feel of how they played the song. The ending flourish on the keys makes it easy to pin down.
Seems like feedback is a recurring theme this year. It adds to the excitement. Jerry really digging into the pinch harmonics on the first solo (you touch a bit of the thumb on your picking hand to different areas of the string while picking to produce higher tones than the note your fretting hand is actually fretting - for more examples see Bill Gibbons on ZZ Top "La Grange" solos [he moves his picking hand all over the place quickly to get a wide variety of pinches], Eddie VH on Kinks cover "You Really Got Me", "Panama" and many others).
Knew the era
Still took a little while to pick up that reoccurring trigger that is a major sign on this one. We win Again! A little more Pig would be fun.
Queen of diamonds
I won but the song is loser. I'm so confused. I was way off looking for this but changed gears and found it.
First guess, first time!
Knew the year and started with a particular show and it was it. The finish of this version is unmistakable...
I know...
I mean, you know.
y'know?
Not my first or second or third
Guess, so don't feel bad. Finally got it as an end to an end. 10 left
Jerry Blows A Gasket
I got the year right away, but I still ended up listening to Jerry play that solo a few dozen times. Not a bad way to start the day though. I love that guitar tone. Except for the blowout of course. Congrats to ladnarc for the big win. I'm gonna win one of these years. LOL. Maybe tomorrow.
Got no chance of losin' this time
That was actually pretty brutal. I went in the wrong direction and didn't listen carefully enough so I spent the morning trying to make my deal go down. Finally got back on track and now I can break out the balloons and confetti.
The sound quality on this
It's fantastic! The mix is great too.
Not doing so hot on the search though.. trying to hone in on that harmonizing voice.
Feedback during the solo is all ya need
Don’t try to hard and pull up old setlist program and search one of the “Golden” years. It’s all ya need.
Feedback
a-plenty this year. This solo gets nice and raunchy.
I too spent some time listening to a bunch of Losers ... all good lol.
Chills
Love that gnarly solo! The first time through the feedback was striking and different, but listening with it sync'd to the archive version - wholly smokes! - sent chills all through my body. And for the first time this year, got a perfect sync as well. Quite a charge to the day. Wish I had been able to attend this show (which also includes an interesting, relaxed approach to another selection on this year's lineup). Thanks!
Good times
Didn't take long to find this and it was a show I was at! Damn I'm getting old lol.
Come to Daddy: A cup of cold coffee
Year of the feedback. I had it narrowed down to 346 shows and waded in. Thank god this one's more than 7 minutes, had it been shorter the wading would have slogged slower still. Always amazed at you heads who hit it in a few stabs. Stumbled past some great versions on the way. At least I'm enjoying the ride. Smile smile smile!
I thought it was toward the beginning of one year...
...but it ended up being toward the end of the previous year, so I was close at first guesses.
Took Longer Than I Anticipated!
Lots of nice versions out there, but only one that fits. Was wandering blindly for a while, but took a break, refocused, and there it was. Starting to snow here, so I guess winter is back!
Phil Bombs and Sweet Keys
make this Loser a winner to me! Slapshot goal at the buzzer!
# of entrants?
In past years, you could see the # of people signed in on the upper right of page. That # had increased over the years. Who doesn't like free music? Not sure how many made an entry on show, but I think quite a few do these days. Congrats to ladnarc, though I'll be rooting for u know who for the big prize. Hopefully there will only be 30 entrants, though I've never seen a grand prize winner listed in past!
Well I got a really good chance of losing this time
You can look around about the wide world over, and you might not find this one.
Don't you push me baby, because I'm throwing in the towel.
Maybe this one will Come to daddy on the inside guess...
Only 10 more Days.
Time flies when you're having fun (and when you're getting old)!!
Spent the night listening to a bunch of losers
good times, good times
Might've dropped the ball on this one though
I wonder what version was gonna be included on Skull and Roses?? Probably from one of the NYC shows in April '71, Manhattan Center the 4th through the 6th, and later The Fillmore East from the 25th-29th. Dave??
so....
a few years back i searched for the craziest feedbacked out loser that i heard years ago. i don't think i ever found it as i remember it being even crazier than this one. but, in the end, this one was the craziest one i did find. and now i get to enter for the golden ticket! fingers crossed!! i could listen all day long......
I can tell the Queen of Diamonds by the way she shines...
Love the genius of Garcia & Hunter...what amazing lyrics & melody. Fun night listening to an amazing song..Well (I hope) I got no chance of losing this time....
Awesome guitar solo
Really great version, made even better by a wild feedback-laden guitar solo.
