Days Of Dead

U.S. Blues
Hint:
A song that went through a radical lyrical transformation a year after its debut. Commonly played as an encore

U.S. Blues began in 1973 as Wave That Flag, with lyrics that were, well, all over the map. When they put it away for the second half of 1973, it was re-worked by Hunter, and came back in February 1974 as U.S Blues

We've all been here before it seems. I focused on Bob's slide notes to nail down this swingin' rocker.

An apropos selection today given our current political climate.

Not able to get relisten.net to load this morning, and it's slowing things down *a lot*.

I couldn't find a recording that's the same quality as this one for today. But all the same sounds are there. Bobby going nuts with the slide. Jerry going off vocally at the end with that nice guitar flourish to finish. When I browse through shows, I'm always drawn to ones with U.S. Blues as an encore. Throw in a Morning Dew in the 2nd set & I'm sold.

Yes, and what notes they are - that mid section solo is unique. Plus I got a perfect sync, leaving no doubt about the match. But WildBill, there's only like 290 U.S. Blues encores - you must do a lot of browsing!

Very interesting about the perfect sync comment. Like WildBill, I didn't find a recording of this version in this quality. This sounds to me like a nugget that hasn't moved into general circulation yet.

Too busy to spend much time on the search, but I like my pick. Good luck all!

Based on what seems to be a pretty common thread this year, I'm surprised the show opener was not the selection.

led me to the year. It also reminded me of a cover that they only did 12 times and I searched the 2 months they played it the most and found it. They did not play the cover this night. There have been other songs from this show released in past Novembers.

Same closer four days in a row? At the same venue? While searching, I came across Winterland 10/16, 10/17, 10/18, and 10/19/74 all closing with "U.S. Blues". Maybe everybody knew about this already, but I had never noticed it before.

Seems almost crazy to think about that happening... It certainly would not happen with Dead & Co, lol.

... check 08-05, 08-06, 09-09 (1st E, but not 2nd), 09-10, 09-11, 09-14, 09-18, and 09-20, just before the GDM run (with one show in between). They were definitely closing w/ "U.S. Blues" a *bunch* in that timeframe. If you guess that the 2nd encore 09-09 was an afterthought, that's 12 out of 13 straight gigs. Jinkies!!

...that's crazy! Not sure how I would feel about the same closing song over and over. Ha ha, who am I kidding? I love it all. ;)

The slide gives you the year.
I like when they do the "boogie" blues changes in the chords ala Green Onions. They didn't always throw that in there depending on the year.
Yes, it appears once again that the vault has a nice sounding board version of this song that is out there in (very nice) audience recording form.
