2 years today since my last win, and that was the Standing On The Corner/Mindbender(Confusion's Prince) unknown venue selection. Still basking in that glow, and passed that calendar on to my son. The past 4 days I've had to bring out the dartboard, so hopefully my luck will change today. I was at the Scarlet show at MSA in Indy, but still missed that one. Batting less than 33% this year but always enjoying the ride. Thank you, Dave!!

So we know Jonah Hill will be playing Jerry in Martin Scorsese's biopic. I hope the movie ends with the spring of this year. This was the absolute peak of the band. A 3 hour movie can't cover all 30 years of the Grateful Dead. I love shows from the Brent years of '89 & '90 too. But I think the movie will have to focus on a shorter time period. Whoever plays Pigpen has to nail it. Talk about a Meet-Up at the Movies. It's going to be epic.
I beg to differ. The absolute peak of the band, as confirmed by no less an authority than Bob Weir himself, was the mid-late 80's.
In the 80's, The Dead played better, rocked harder, had better keyboards with piano AND B-3 AND synthesizer, better Drumz, a larger and therefore necessarily better repertoire (a key advantage), and contrary to some persistent whining, Garcia's voice was better, fuller, and more expressive than his high thin voice of the 70s. Also, in my opinion, the best single year of the 80's was 1985, hands down.
We're all entitled to our own view, including me, and that is mine. Hell even if you confine the question to the 70's, I think 1977 is overrated and prefer a lot of 1972-73 shows.
WildBill29 and The Fool -- I believe Bob feels that Bob was at his best in the 80s, and perhaps he was. The band, IMO, was at its creative and exploratory peak in the decade running from '68 to '78. I generally confine my listening to those years despite having not seen my first show until summer '85. This is not to say that there wasn't creativity and brilliance after '78, there certainly was.
Creatively speaking you are undoubtedly correct.
Where I differ is on performance, but I think it comes down largely to 2 different styles and some like it better one way and some like the other better. I'm an unapologetic, pre-Touch but still fairly late-vintage (1984) East Coast Deadhead. And the 11-2-85 show in Richmond may well have been the peak experience of my life.

I will be very (pleasantly) surprised if it isn't a disaster. Two things Hollywood can't do well at all: 1) music and 2) psychedelics.
Think about this: who will play Neal Cassady? None of the Kerouac/On The Road movies have been worth a damn and that was even when they were focusing on doing Neal Cassady right.

If memory serves, Bob made a few comments after Keith’s death concerning, a. He was never happy that Donna was in the band, and b. He was happy when Brent came aboard because he always thought that Keith’s propensity for playing a grand piano, added nothing more than another percussion instrument to the mix. (Jerry may have shared in that sentiment.) The following years up until Jerry’s diabetic coma in 86 are superb, but I have to agree with WildBill29… 77-79 was the very best….. Not always right but I’ve never (often) been wrong

Having been lucky enough to start seeing the band in the early 70's and to be still going strong 50 years later, I always find pinning down any penultimate year or era to not really fit with the spirit of the band, at least as I understand it. At best, I differentiate the various eras by what was strong or prominent but also what weak or needed work. I enjoy pretty much every era equally. The main constant about the band and the scene is that it is always changing. I liked every era, hard to choose a penultimate best.
68-78 was the extraordinary creative peak of songwriting and experimentation for sure, but there was also some weakness in the vocals and the band's tightness. 77-79 was really good, but screechy vocals and lackluster keyboards at times make it hard for me to say it was "best". The early 80's were also creative and had their own charm but Jer's drug issues increasingly was the 800 lb gorilla in the venue. Post 86, the band hit another peak - this time as playing musicians. They were not writing a ton of songs, and weren't quite as experimental, but they were tight as hell, and both Garcia and the rest of the band was spot on, vocally. Then Brent passed, and the next year Bill Graham. At that point even though the band seemed tired and jaded, there was that last bit of creativity which produced memorable songs & music & occasional flashes of brilliance. Speaking of Peggy-O, try the one from 10-28-91, one of Bill Graham's wake shows. I was there. When Jer sang "Sweet William, he is dead"; the entire venue dissolved into a puddle. After BG's passing, the band seemed to lose their way a bit. It was clear post 91 that things had to change massively....and then Jer made his move in August 95.
Thank you for the wisdom -- I definitely appreciate hearing from my Grateful Dead elders. I'm sure being at the shows in 1968-1978 had to be amazing and I wish I had been there. I will check out that Peggy-O for sure!
Stumbled upon some beautiful Pigpen in my outer excursions yesterday. Check out 4/18/1970 at Family Dog. Didn’t see a recording in the usual places (archive, relisten, setlists, etc), but discovered it on YouTube.
The entire show is well worth a listen(!), but at the end, the beautiful 5 song mini-set of Pigpen singing solo, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, and always soulful, is a treat. Wow! Listened, and re-listened, and will listen again.

I have the Pig acoustic set you are referring to, on vinyl. It was a RSD release. It was a show advertised as Mickey Hart and His Heartbeats and Bobby Ace and His Cards from the Bottom of the Deck. Live/Acoustic on 2/18/1970 from Family Dog. Pig plays The Rub, Roberta, Bring Me My Shotgun, The Mighty Flood which then morphs into Black Snake, all just him on guitar. It takes up Side 4 of the double vinyl release. It's from Rhino/Grateful Dead Productions in 2013.
Yeah a nice gift. Love this whole show. A certain married couple i know made their first trip to the east coast at this show. Loved it when Wheel just developed gently like this. When they took their time and listened to each other The Wheel would really shine.
This unique combination is beautiful. And led to another rare song. Great show all around.
... and 90 is great too. 91 has great memories for me but obviously quite a different band. Bob, Phil and I think Billy all commented on 1989 being very important (healthy Jerry, fiery playing, new tech etc) . So glad they have all the great video from the summer tour for those Meet-Up At The Movies nights of the past decade or so. I hope a 1989 mega box is in the works.

Whatever period you think is the band's "best", this song duo is a treat. Dave may only have given us half the sandwich here, but it is mighty tasty. Fill yourselves up on the rest of this concert feast.

And rarer than the proverbial left-handed monkey wrench. I kept hearing the ice-cream truck rolling through my left ear during Terrapin. I really enjoyed those keys despite there being no ice cream at the end. And the train really did "put it's brakes on" so to speak during the song, depending on which version you were listening to I suppose. Fun combo, thanks David!
And re: beautiful Wheel intros, check out the version from 8/22/93 Eugene. Sirius GD channel plays it all the time. Whole show is great considering the era.
I would have to go 72 or 76. Of course I'm somewhat biased as I saw more shows in that era.
Even with her shrill banshee voice, this is still a great jam. In fact, the entire second set jam of this show is really good (and under the radar).
Was searching thru early The Main Ten and The Eleven, discovered 1969 version on Baby Blue in glorious psychedelic cowboy folksy style, led me to Bid You Goodnight, and heard a Bahamian Calypso version from early ‘60’s by Joseph Spence and Pindar Family. The Grateful Dead: The Band that keeps on giving. Full of thanks to be part of this experiment and thoroughly enjoying your shared passion and dedication for all things grateful, feeling like a bunch of kids in a candy store, hear that witch wind whine, see that Dog Star shine, I got a feeling there’s no time to lose.

This was my 1st of 150 plus shows after being forced to go to this one by one of my Dead Head friends. HAHA. Estimated to end the 1st set. Terrapin to end the show. No encore. They got my attention!
