fun search. casey took me to some good places before landing at the right station. ever notice how you're like -wait is that it, ? that could be it? is that ... and you spend so much time trying to see if it fits but when it does fit you know right away. some good clues in the mix to narrow down the listening.

Should be able to narrow this down. My search will have to wait though; headed our for some hiking in the CVNP.

I have a high res 32 bit version of yesterday's show, its 16GB, kinda ridiculous, it is around on the internet if anyone is bored.

Take my advice you'd be better off playin 30 Days of Dead.
Watch your speed as you hunt for this show. I had a bit of trouble ahead of my search, but finally left that trouble behind as I came across the right notes.
You know it’s the end of Day 23. Only 7 more Days until December.
Enjoy today’s challenge.
Happy Sunday Funday!

First I thought I heard a little beer barrel polka, but then after a few times it sounds more like looney tunes…does not help me in my search but it is fun

Yeah, that's a bit of the Looney Tunes theme (aka The Merry Go Round Broke Down). Like you, recognizing it hasn't help me narrow the search any, but it's fun.

Searched for almost an hour to find the Looney Tunes tuning one, but finally got lucky and found it. Had a déjà vu along the way.

Putting some musical clues together, I narrowed down the possibilities to just around thirty shows. Not the slog I was anticipating!

There is much debate over whether or not the keyboard player played an upright piano during this tour. There may be a stage photo or two where it looks like he is playing an upright, but I've ready that it was actually the usual grand, just with a primitive pickup that didn't sound as good as it would during the next tour.

to narrow this one down if you notice what's missing. Not as many shows as it seems at first glance.

I must've heard every version from 1971 to 1974 of "Casey Jones," save for ones I could safely eliminate, and none of them matched up. I feel like I'm going crazy, and moreso I feel frustrated. What am I missing that apparently everybody else is not?

other than commercial releases, what did you safely eliminate? maybe the answer is there.

Thinking too much or not enough, comment clues, i’m lost and confused, tried to find a looney jam, or find song at particular spot in show, went all over, now trying one by one, must b missing something that keeps me from needing to check every single show in 1972…lol just example as they played it every day it seems. I take a break and try later don’t want my laptop flying out the window yet.

Soooooo... I think I know the musicians here, with that assumption there is only 215 possibilities hahah. Have not found it yet but honestly it's a beautiful journey. I actually started from the start just for the heck of it and it was very interesting to hear how Casey developed. The opening riff we all know took about 20 live performances before Casey's opening became recognizable. This particular version is smokin, I think I actually hear Jer egg the boys on to keep the pace. Happy Hunting. Th-Th-That's all, folks! :-)

At long last, I finally found it - it was, quite literally, the last place I'd expect. Touche, Dave! He must like this show a lot!

Where Dave pulls a wascally wabbit out of his hat and I'm guessing this is one of those. One year he had a practice session. Another he had a recording that wasn't in my Deadbase. Toss us a lifeline guys. I've been at it on and off for 5 hours.
Cheers

finally got this engine into the station after a long slog on the tracks. they played Casey Jones nearly every show back in the day! somehow missed it on the first pass through but caught up to it by sundown. even went looking for Merry Go Round Broke Down stats! didn't find anything too helpful.

Unless you listen to multiple sources. Just as someone earlier posted I had checked this one maybe even more than once in this marathon and it took a different source to get it. I was in the right ballpark at least twice. Job done!

This Casey was pretty easy..about 3-4 tries to narrow down the year(s)
The top tape of the show on Relisten had the calliope sound intro where all the others had it cut...if ya checked the show, it was obvious.
Last week I happened onto a studio session tape on Relisten that had them rehearsing this 'Merry go round broke down' cartoon sound. (I found no record of it in DBX.)
It did help me to close in on the year for today though.

It took almost 5 years to hear a live Casey Jones, but I got the two they played in '84. The Merriweather Post Opener electrified the crowd as it was the first time played in 133 shows. The BCT Encore of the 11/2 show was the break out of Gimme Some Lovin'. Then after the Jerry bust in early 1985, we didn't hear Casey Jones again for another 8 years. This was a serious challenge to find today's answer, but glad all the same. This must be heaven, tonight I crossed the line.
