Days Of Dead

China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider
Hint:
Aside from 1975-1979, this was a huge part of the Dead's repertoire since late 1969.

East Rutherford, NJ, Brendan Byrne Arena
From opening night of the Dead's five night stand at Brendan Byrne, this "China>Rider" is quite a bit longer than most versions from this era, with lots of MIDI fun along the way.

what a nice little jam there before the Rider commences. I hoped for the year before I started playing, and knew I was granted my wish as soon as I heard the drums at the beginning.

without a china -rider
played 0nly 522 times. but i guess there's about one third of that to chose from.
find it strange that in all my 125 shows only caught it 5 times
-oops edit- found one more in my searching. that makes six. still not enough
this was a good one. took about an hour. started a year off but was heading in the right direction.
gonna miss ya'll when it's gone

Or not, but they almost veer into GDTRFB at around the 10 minute mark. There's also some midi magic by Garcia here and the band is tight. Nice era for the Grateful Dead. Thanks Dead.net for this ultra fine nugget! Ooh, that's a tight fade at the end! :-)

This show is also listed in DeadBase IX, which is the only source I use; however, the only info for that date is that New Riders opened. I used some helpful hints (youth going crazy/Darkness-Good Lovin'), did a brief google search, then I took a shot at this venue. Got it right but not a daily winner. This would have been such a cool show to see. I wonder how they ended up playing at a CYO building? Did a Bishop of PA have to sign off? Just wondering, but has anyone gotten all 28 days correct so far? I've gotten 13 but no calendar yet, but still a month left in my last years 11/23/2019 winner. Also, has anyone on this Silver Thread ever won the Grand Prize, or know who has? Not me. Enjoy the next 2 days all. It's been fun.

Never met a China > Rider I didn't like! I was fortunate to have enjoyed several renditions in person, most notably one with the "Feeling Groovy" jam.

China Cat's length is an anomaly. That fact, and the lineup here, made this a quick search. I've never heard this before. Right where they 'should' break off into Rider, Garcia starts to get playful and the rest of the band is right there in the same inventive mood. Even after the transition peaks, they're not quite ready to leave China Cat for a couple more minutes of MIDI magic. Exciting stuff!

Right with you on this - Jerry was clearly in a jamming mood and nicely inventive. Unlike you, I got a bit messed up era-wise (fooled by the keyboard sounds at the start) but eventually figured it out (and heard some interesting variations along the way). Still wondering why the sound level on this is so much less than on the archive board, but must give thanks for another inspired and welcome offering. Don't have a back door, but the sun is certainly shining today!

Yessah!
I was in attendance at this show. My head snapped around when Garcia came out with the Wolf. My note on back of ticket stub: “ Wolf Ax reappears! Fantastic!”

I’ve noticed this a few times over the last couple of weeks and now it is a daily occurrence. The song of the day doesn’t automatically load when I refresh the site. I keep clearing the history, cookies, cache, reboot, use different browsers, etc. The song finally comes up magically, but then the form is incomplete and only lets me input the venue and date. I guess the odds are better for all of you to get the calendar now! LOL! At this point, I’m thankful I can hear the music and relive a show or two through 30 DOD. Thanks, Dave! This year more than ever!

"the form is incomplete and only lets me input the venue and date."

I think if you are logged into dead.net you don't have to put your personal info, seems like it's just for those without an account. When I signed in, I was also only able to input the venue and date.

Same thing happens for me. If I'm signed into my acct on dead.net, the form only asks for my entry of venue & date. But if I'm not signed in, it asks for my name & contact info, too.
Also to dancingoldenbear - fyi, if I'm signed into my acct, I can see the song of the day right when it's posted after midnight. But if I'm NOT signed in then it takes more time for it to show up on the page . . . even if I refresh the page. Hope this helps.

I think the last song of the month should be Next Time You See Me. Not only would love a Pig song, but the line, Next Time you seem me, Things won't look the same. Is my hope for the future. We need change. A healthy world.

Love this year of 30 Days! So many great tunes from this era. Thank you.
Only took a few peeks through the year I chose (based on certain sounds this year was my first choice)

Is it me? I don't find venue choice to match the ticket stubs from this show. Got the show and location for sure but usually default to what the stubs say just like those Oakland shows.

Yes, there was the original name, which is in the drop down menu, and the other/subsequent name, which is not. Shows on archive list both.

spent a long time yesterday....was in the right area but missed it.
china is in my top 3 dead tunes...heard it with keith, brent, bruce, vince.
thought i was in the right era but after an hour i went to "grateful dead gear" to try and pin down the wolf.
Sent me to another place..when i reached 0-100 i gave up.

hope tomorrow i can find it, either way i leave the month happy and smiling but really want to find the last one before i have to wait another year.
see ya tomorrow
peace

Favorite acoustic "Rider" is Harpur College, 1970. Love the Muddy Water line. Also love the "Washed My Hands in the Muddy Water" from Felt Forum, 1971. Reminds me of the first "Black Muddy River" I saw, Oakland '86. I saw 10 "China>Rider" combos, and hands down my favorite was the electric "Rider: from the Hult Center, 1984.

worked my way back from a year ahead just checking the timings and whaddya know...
the first one closest to the length and the feedback ending was the right one...
so I guess I'll say I hit it first try..
such a proud-walking jingle in this morning's sunrise
gonna miss the 30 Days of Dead when it's gone...tomorrow....
It's been awhile since a Cosmic Charlie or Jack Straw..or a Ramble On Rose or maybe a beautiful Brokedown Palace to finish off a pleasant month of sweet songs to Rock My Soul...merci beaucoup Mssr. Lemieux..Fare You Well

From top to bottom. Very pleased to have this lovely and lively combination(and WHAT a combo they are!)to listen to and share. I was way fooled as to the era at first due to the keys I believe. But those same keys unlocked heaven's door for me this morning. Many thanks and so Grateful!

with the era and the keys. But I moved on and found this beauty!
Despite some flubs and inconsistencies in this show, I listened to a few other masterpieces in it . . . especially in the second set. Always one of the coolest things about these 30 days is discovering more gems! THANK YOU DAVE!!

I have the same issue occasionally, usually early in the morning. What I discovered is if you go to the email you received from dead.net announcing the beginning of 30 DoD from late October and click on the email, the correct song for that day always shows up.

The most helpful hint that led me to Scranton yesterday was the one that mentioned "the favorite son left the area" before this show. Knowing that Smokin' Joe Biden was a native, I started poking around. Never did/do play the whole shows so I made my choice and went back to the peace pipe. So glad nobody mentioned ANYTHING about The Office; that would not have been a hint, that would have been a wrapped gift. Hints are only good if they make you put some thought into it.

Some folks asked, and for anyone else who’s interested, there’s (hopefully) another month of bliss ahead with more songs & many of us over at the Unofficial 31 Days of Dead. So far, our brother Ed has done this for 10 years running, so I hope for the same this year. Won’t know for sure until his 1st post on December 1st. His tribute to Robert Hunter last year was truly PRICELESS!

Unofficial 31 DoD doesn’t have the fun of a game to search out the song like here on 30 DoD, but there are more great songs & daily downloads and Ed’s stellar commentary! It’s a great month of community and more Dead. Come on over and join in to keep the tunes rolling thru December and we can all celebrate moving into a New Year together! Lord knows we need to celebrate that!

Look for it here on Dec 1st:

“Ask” has been used as a noun for a thousand years — though the way we most often encounter it today, with a modifier (“a big ask”)

I find myself alive
tomorrow
maybe go beneath the ground

But nah, hopefully I'll find myself healthy and happily hunting day #30's gem of an offering. Once again, this has been quite the hoot, and I don't look forward to every day of any other month like I do in November. This year, I think we all needed this even more. So thank you Grateful Dead and the Keepers of the Vault for your spirit of generosity!!! Keep me stumblin' on those studio outtakes, I don't mind. And all of you stay healthy and safe out there so we can do it all again next year.

Peace,
Matt

I'm going with "Jack Straw" to close out the month.

A good friend of mine has opted for "Lost Sailor" > "Saint of Circumstance".

Oh look, it's Little Stevie J. "Holes in the knees of my blues" Junior!

Man, this one is stumping me. I thought I had the era down but not sure. Didn’t go through all of them. I suspect it may be later than I think but I don’t have time to keep wading through.
