My main purpose in writing to you today is to get the word out about the annual KPFA Grateful Dead fund-raising marathon, scheduled for Saturday, February 19, 9 am to 1 am Pacific Time.
Lots of information about it on my blog: http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/kpfa_gd-marathon_2-19-2011
I am hoping to raise $50,000 in this 16-hour event, and of course I am hoping each of you will contribute something.
In advance of the marathon broadcast, I have put up several items for auction. Some of them are on Facebook, accessible through this page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=185116574852376
For those who aren't on Facebook, there are many other items up for auction on my blog: http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/archives/tag/kpfa-auction
Items for auction on the blog include:
- a gift certificate for a meal at Bocanova, one of our favorite restaurants in Oakland
- Hartman Electronics' Envelope Filter (a guitar effect), designed in consultation with guitarist Mark Karan (who will perform on the marathon with a special band)
- A photograph of Jerry Garcia, taken on 9/28/75 by Jon Sievert
- two art prints by Mark Erickson
- An original, sealed copy of the limited-edition Postcards of the Hanging: Grateful Dead Perform the Songs of Bob Dylan, with the bonus disc
- and more to come.
How you can help with the KPFA Grateful Dead marathon:
- Please spread the word! Lots of info here: http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/kpfa_gd-marathon_2-19-2011
- Take a look at the auctions on Facebook and on my blog, and please make a bid or two.
- Listen to the broadcast on Saturday, February 19 (webcast outlets are listed on the blog page linked above)
- Give money to KPFA!
Thank you for your support. I am on the Local Station Board of KPFA, so my desire to ensure and promote the health of the station is even greater and more enthusiastic than ever before (and I've been doing this fund-raiser for 25 years).

I have a new release to rave about!
FestivaLink.net presents David Gans & Eric Rawlins: Desert Wind, Rollin' River
Players:
David Gans (guitar, vocals)
Eric Rawlins (guitar, vocals)
David Gans and Eric Rawlins have been making music together, mostly at parties and occasionally in public, for more than 20 years. Recorded before a live audience in David's living room in Oakland, this album includes original compositions and many of their favorite songs by others and highlights the warmth of their musical friendship over time.
Recorded by Stephen Barncard
Edited and mixed by Jeremy Goody at Megasonic Sound, Oakland CA
Mastered in HDCD™ by Dave Glasser at Airshow Mastering
The title, "Desert Wind, Rollin' River," is a line from one of Eric's wonderful songs. Five of the songs are mine, three are Eric's, and the rest are favorites from 20 years of Sing Things, including two by Kate Wolf, two by Rodney Crowell, one by Jackson Browne, three by Nanci Griffith, and the old Don and Juan number "What's Your Name?"

Good day, friends!
I have two urgent items for your immediate attention, and some news about my musical plans for the year.
First, tomorrow is the annual KPFA Grateful Dead marathon! I'll be on the air from 9 am until 1 am Pacific time, and the program will be webcast via http://www.kpfa.org, http://www.nugs.net, and http://www.gdradio.net - please spread the word! And I hope you'll make a donation some time during the day. You can do that online at http://www.kpfa.org or call 510-848-5732 or 1-800-439-5732.
Plenty more info (and a photo of the wonderful t-shirt that Papa Lindsey made for us, plus a list of the fine thank-you gifts we're offering) at
We'll have a live performance from The Fall Risk at around 2pm, and the David Nelson Band will join us from The Big Island at around 6:30pm. The rest of the day will be filled with rare musical treats by the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia; I've been working on this for quite a while and I have some wonderful gems to share.
Saturday, February 4, 9 am to 1 am: the annual KPFA Grateful Dead fund-raising marathon. Webcast all over the universe! http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/kpfamarathon_2012

The second action item has to do with a swell new band call The Sycamore Slough String Band. This is an acoustic quartet doing Grateful Dead-ish music, with Bay Area bluegrass luminary David Thom on mandolin, "Fiddle Dave" Muhlethaler, and Roger Sideman on bass. We had our first two rehearsals in a recording studio, and we came away with enough presentable material for two CDs (more on that later). We emerged form that session with a video clip of my new arrangement of "New Speedway Boogie," and we've entered it in the Dead Covers Project. Please take a look at the clip on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoZfxawvKeQ - and hit the like" button if you're so inclined. You can also find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/SycamoreSlough and you'll see our first two gigs in the listing below.

Oh, one more thing! I have TWO new releases on Festivalink and Livedownloads - a solo show recorded 3/26/11 at Rollinsville CO and a studio recording with my pal Eric Rawlins titled "Desert Wind, Rollin' River." You'll find information and links to both downloads sites at http://www.dgans.com/discography/ . Both recordings as available on CD from either vendor, and they're also on iTunes.

Greetings on the eve of my trip to the Mountain Time Zone! I start (still in the Pacific time zone) with a house concert in Las Vegas on Saturday, and then I'm off to Utah, Idaho, and Montana for six performances in eight days, interspersed with awesome sightseeing and spiritual refreshment.
On June 21, I will play in two bands at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley: Acoustic with the Sycamore Slough String Band, and Electric with Dogpatch Junction.
July takes me east twice: Buffalo and Nelson Ledges over the July 4 weekend, and then a longer trip later in the month that will include three festivals, several house concerts, and "Dark Star High School," a midweek retreat at the Full Moon Resort in New York with the Dark Star Orchestra, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, and Betty Cantor-Jackson.
I'm still working on a few more things for late July, possibly including gigs in western New Jersey, Connecticut, and/or Long Island. Check dgans.com/gigs.html for updates.
And before we get to the complete list of gigs as it stands today, please check out this interview I did, joined by the Rumpke Mountain Boys, right after our thrilling set at the Dark Star Jubilee on May 27: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmaFkimYckE

My performance schedule is posted at dgans.com/gigs.html - new gigs are being added all the time.
As always, I'm in the market for house concert opportunities. If you see an open spot on my schedule in your general vicinity, let's try to make something happen! And remember: word of mouth is a gigantic part of musicians' promotion and publicity these days, so if you like my music, please spread the word about my gigs and recordings.
My recordings are available at http://www.dgans.com/discography/
Great thanks to Jim Dunlop for providing me with first-rate strings for all my guitars! http://www.jimdunlop.com/
Thanks also to Rick Turner for creating the amazing guitar I play on tour, the Renaissance RS-6. http://www.renaissanceguitars.com
If you want to be removed from this list, please send email to david@trufun.com and I'll take care of it ASAP.
SYCAMORE SLOUGH STRING BAND:
Sycamore Slough String Band is an acoustic quartet focusing on the music of the Grateful Dead, with other fine songs popping up occasionally as well. With me are mandolinist/guitarist David Thom and bassist Roger Sideman. We held our first rehearsals at Megasonic Studio in Oakland in January, confident that magic would be made, and we did indeed wind up with releasable music. "First Rehearsals" is available in FLAC, MP3, and CD on demand from festivalink.net - http://flink.livedownloads.com/show.asp?show=7293 and in audiophile (96/24) from HDTracks - https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=HD063…
Here are two videos from First Rehearsals:
JackaroeNew Speedway Boogie
DAVID GANS AND ERIC RAWLINS:
I'm also hawking Desert Wind, Rollin' River, a studio recording of Americana type songs (including several originals) with my dear friend Eric Rawlins. We've been singing together, mostly at private gatherings, for more than 20 years. The recording was done in my living room by the great Stephen Barncard, who recorded American Beauty and David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name...) It's available in FLAC, MP3, and CD on demand from Festivalink
And in audiophile (96/24) from HDTracks
