Re: The Wharf Rat from this show.

db, Lambert thinks it's Garcia. Listen to the "Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast, American Beauty 50, Episode 8, Till the Morning Comes." Tape of Garcia interview in which he discusses writing To Lay Me Down on the piano and his experience working out songs on piano. Lambert comments that the piano style on Wharf Rat overdub on Skull and Roses matches Garcia's piano style on the "Garcia" solo album. Sounds right to me.

The Wharf Rat from this show.

Could someone help me with who was playing keyboards on Wharf Rat from 4/26/71. Listening to Parish today on Sirius. He was in rare form, told among a thousand stories, the one where Hunter found white patent leather shoes, Garcia put them on and started rocking and playing completely differently. Then he fell asleep still rocking in the shoes and still playing!
But that's not why I'm on this thread: The question is--I clearly heard a piano on the song. Now, my understanding is that the organ sound on the Album Skullfuck was added later. But am I imagining hearing piano? I know Pig was playing, but the keyboards don't sound like him. It sounded just a tad like Keith, but he he didn't join until later in the year. So is there a deadhead out there that can answer the question? Who's playing piano on that performance?
    Thanks,
    db

Thanks John. I knew Dark Star followed Hard to Handle. I remember having a copy of this show back then. 1971 was such a pivotal year. Such raw, electric sound contrasting all the acoustic shows in '70. It was a demarcation point for what followed in '72 and beyond....
