    October 28 - November 3, 2019

    Week of October 28-November 3, 2019

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1972, 1984, and 1989.

Our first selection this week is from 7/16/72 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, CT, where we have this magnificent and unique second set jam, featuring Truckin'> Drums> The Other One > He's Gone> The Other One> Looks Like Rain. Aside from the week-long run at the Academy of Music in New York in March 1972, this Hartford show and the show two nights later in Jersey City were the only East Coast Dead shows between December 1971 and mid-September 1972.

Next is the well-known, and excellent, start of the second set from 7/13/84 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA, where we have Scarlet Begonias>Touch Of Grey>Fire On The Mountain>Man Smart (Woman Smarter). Later this night the Dead would encore with Dark Star, the first time they’d played it since 12/31/81.

Lastly this week is the end of the second set from 7/19/89 at Alpine Valley, the last music the Grateful Dead would ever play at Alpine. From this fine show we have Space> The Other One > The Wheel > Morning Dew, Lovelight.

Be sure to stop by here next week for more music from the vault.

    Scarlet Touch Fire

I heard back in the day ... that a dead head or dead head's wrote the fan club with this song combo to be played ... I mean a lot of letters (not emails!) almost one a day at times ... don't know if it's true or not ... ?

The solo in Scarlet is SO SICK! Thanks for the goosebumps...I guess it's just what I needed!

What makes this performance and era so compelling is seeing the physical and emotional state Jerry was in at this time...the darkstar from this run is one of my favorites and generally underrated and unappreciated.
