Week of January 27-February 2, 2020
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1976, 1981, and 1987, all from the state of New York.
Our first selection is from the excellent show on 9/27/76 in Rochester, NY, where we have this inventive and unique sequence of Might As Well, Samson And Delilah, Help On The Way > Slipknot!> Drums> The Other One> Wharf Rat> Slipknot!> Franklin's Tower. The Dead were experimenting with some very interesting song combination and sequences in 1976, as evidenced here.
Next we have music from the middle night of a very short three show tour on the east coast just before the Dead embarked on their Europe ’81 tour, with music from the second set from 9/26/81 in Buffalo, NY (Western New York Dead is outstanding!) featuring Space > Not Fade Away > Morning Dew> Playing In The Band > One More Saturday Night.
Next up is the bulk of the first set from the final night of a five night run at Madison Square Garden in New York City on 9/20/87, where we have Jack Straw > West L.A. Fadeaway ; My Brother Esau ; Far From Me; It Must Have Been The Roses ; Desolation Row. The end of Desolation Row is cut off due to that being the end of Side A of the cassette master, however the Dead’s vault also contains an uncut Beta PCM digital tape of this set, so it’s all intact.

Sound levels on Tapers Section
David – thanks so much for all the years of providing such great Taper’s Section releases!
I had one item for the suggestion box, given in the spirit of gratitude for your great efforts:
Sometimes the sound level of the selections is low (this week is fine, though). Even when I have it cranked to the max on my ear buds, it still is low.
I listen to it while I’m on the treadmill for my morning workout and sometimes its hard to hear the music clearly above the whir of the machine. On other selections, however, the levels are good. It seems to vary greatly.
Anyway, I don’t know if you have control over that, but I thought I’d chime in.
Although I could not caution all
I still might warn a few
