Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye! Gentle mistresses and most distinguished gentlemen, we have come upon the release of the DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 37, from the Fifteenth of April in the year Nineteen Seventy-Eight, at ye olde College Of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Cast your waistcoats and your bonnets aside, the Grateful Dead are on steady gallop from the opening high-kick of "Mississippi Half-Step" into a where are we going? where have we been? "Passenger," followed by full-on versions of "Friend Of The Devil," "El Paso," "Brown-Eyed Women," and a double-barreled "Let It Grow>Deal." Catch your breath and straighten out your tricorne because the 2nd set shows no bounds with delightful takes ("Bertha>Good Lovin'," "One More Saturday Night") and introspection ("Candyman," "Playing In The Band"). Then - great fifes and drums - it's 15 minutes of "Rhythm Devils," with band and crew gathered round to amplify the merriment before delivering a rare incantation of "Not Fade Away>Morning Dew" that sets the soul alight. Pure jollification!

    The town crier's addendum:

Three bags full! Lest you feel 4/15/78 beginneth and endeth too quickly, we've selected highlights from Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, PA, 4/18/78 to satisfy your fancy.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 37: WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA 4/15/78 was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman. It is guaranteed to sell out - often within hours.

*2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

I still have your original write up as a file on an older computer. I also think One Man did some extensive work/documentation on E72 and other tours.

But all of this is heady stuff to me, just hard to keep up with this old brain...and I think I remember DHB's beer documentary.

I know I am not up to the task.. it took me a couple months to get through my first listen all those years ago. I think I'd still be on it if I took notes, rewinding.. taking copious notes, editing down the notes, reslistening then tossing my notes and starting over..

I do like this writeup from the Internet Archive on the topic. There is a write-up for each show that is pretty close to my impression. I believe it was done before the box came out, so some of the recordings used were not nearly so stellar. Some good light GD listening.

    https://archive.org/post/304297/europe-72-notebook

Funny.. I took a brief pause from my 71 stream of consciousness yesterday and picked up Lille France. What a great little show.. A+ in my book. Phil's comment is just about perfect, "it felt like he was playing in the midst of a French impressionist painting"

I concur. if there is anyone 'round here who purports a vast knowledge of the Europe 72 jaunt, it's KeithFan. It's quite an endeavor, and I know a bit from experience, as I had done this for each of the Dark Stars several years back as I awaited Boxzilla. Likely many have seen this before, but in the spirit of being a team player, I offer an encore sharing of these efforts while we now await word from KF on his uptake for the balance of the tour:

    Here goes....

4/8/1972 - Wembly Empire Pool, London - 32 mins; intense/fast paced first leg up til about 10 mins then returns to DS theme for 1st verse; spacey post-verse til ~17 min, then pace picks up for a few minutes, followed by a brief meltdown; additional spaciness around 24 mins followed by another full meltdown; interesting groove established around 28 min that has hints of Sugar Mag (into which it segues, flawlessly). No second verse.

4/14/1972 - Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, DK - 29 mins; loose first 10 mins not overly spacey; gets spacey around 11 mins; interesting groove establishes around 16 min to head into first verse w/interesting beat; heads off into intense nearly 7-minute jam inclusive of a very tight and fast Feelin Groovy jam; final 3 minutes are a meltdown. No second verse.

4/17/1972 - Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, DK - 31 mins; spacey opening to about 7:30 when first DS theme emerges leading to 1st verse at 9:45. Spacey post-2nd verse tries to take off but melts further around 19 min; returns to a partial groove around 24:30 and closes out with spaceyness in the last 2 mins. No second verse.

4/24/1972 - Rheinhalle, Dusseldorf, Germany - Split by Me & My Uncle; 26 mins 1st half, 14:30 second half. Spacey opening until about 8:45 where it coalesces and falls into first DS theme around 10:15 followed shortly by 1st verse with slow, sparse notes. Spacey feedback following verse until 15:45 and then picks up into an intense, fast paced jam for just under 2 minutes before it becomes dissonant again leading to major meltdown which eventually heads into Me & My Uncle with ease. Second half: spacey reintroduction persists until about 7 mins, where Keith leads-in with some piano phrasing and then the band follows into a tight fast paced jam where Jerry plays some lines back and forth as if in conversation with himself and then maintains an intense level effortlessly segueing into Wharf Rat. No second verse.

4/29/1972 - Musikhalle, Hamburg, Denmark - 30 mins; spacey opening for ~5 mins, then enters a groove and Phil hints at the Feeling Groovy jam until it finally is joined by Jerry a minute later until about 8:00, then the floor drops out into space. DS theme appears at 14 min which leads to first verse. Spacey post-verse noodling leads to major meltdown, settling in at 22 mins with a fat, fast-paced Keith-led groove. Final 4 mins are spacey & lead to major melt #2, dropping into Sugar Mag as DS finally melts away. No second verse.

5/4/1972 - Olympia Theatre, Paris - Split by drums; 19 mins 1st half; 17:34 2nd half. Spacey opening til about 6 mins when fast paced jam kicks in until 11:20, slowing down then resurrecting the DS theme into the first verse. 4 mins of space leads into drums. Second half post-drums is very spacey until 7 mins, then kicks into overdrive with a very high energy jam leading to a phenominal Feelin Groovy Jam for several minutes before settling into the second verse. DS dissipates into the Sugar Mag from E'72.

5/7/1972 - Bickershaw Festival, Wigan, UK - 19:49 mins; decent, coherent jamming for the first several minutes that congeals nicely around 8 minutes. Bottom falls out around 10 mins and leads to some light noodling, cymbal fills and space. DS theme emerges at 14:23 and heads into 1st verse. Space fills the air through the remainder of the song until it totally breaks down into drums. No second verse.

5/11/1972 - Rotterdam Civic Hall, Netherlands - Split by drums; 13:45 mins 1st half; 30:34 mins 2nd half; Opens with a light, airy jam that persists to congeal into a decent groove as it treads in and out of spacey phrasing. This settles into a mysterious sounding jam that grows with intensity without a return to the DS theme before dissolving into drums. Emerging from drums, Phil and Billy duel for 2 minutes before Jerry joins back in with some complimentary thoughts; the DS theme appears around 5 min followed by 1st verse. A few moments of spacey feedback give way to spacey noodling that devolves into a full blow chaotic meltdown, only to emerge around 19:30 into a very nice, fast paced groove that hints at Caution and PITB jams. This eventually dissolves and a light, sparse outro ends the song as it heads off into Sugar Mag. No second verse.

5/18/1972 - Kongressaal, Muenchen, Denmark - 28:20 mins; almost 2 mins of noodling before opening notes from Phil; a loose jam ensues around the DS theme for the next several minutes and then decays. At ~9 min an interesting jam emerges, which eventually settles back into the DS theme and 1st verse around 14:30. The remainder of this DS is borderline chaos as it treads in and out of varying degrees of a meltdown until it settles into Morning Dew. No second verse.

5/23/1972 - The Strand Lyceum, London - 30 mins; Spacey opening minutes lead to tight fast paced jam commencing around 3:30 for two minutes and then it settles into another spacey jam digressing to almost…nothing. Billy and Phil then have a small duel until ~13:30 when the rest of the band fills back into a delicate groove which grows to into a jam reminiscent of the post-Truckin' foray from E'72 until about 17 mins, when they drop into the DS theme and 1st verse. Ensuing is additional delicate spaciness that transgresses into a frenzied meltdown madness, and eventually settles into Morning Dew. No second verse.

5/25/1972 - The Strand Lyceum, London - 34 mins, out of Wharf Rat. Strong opening with a groove almost from the beginning, no noodling around here in the first 7 minutes. Then turns very spacey until 15 mins when DS theme appears, and heads off into 1st verse. Post-verse finds a Billy, Phil, and Keith duel for several minutes. At 21 mins, Phil institutes a mellow Feeling Groovy jam, soon joined by the rest of the band until ~25 mins. Final minutes are dominated by space and then a monumental meltdown before heading off into Sugar Mag. No second verse.

Encore: Uncle John's Band-Midnight Hour-And We Bid You Goodnight

Don’t get me wrong, this is a very fine show, with more than its fair share of oddities and rarities. I enjoy the quirky goodness of any show that has a Dark Hollow and a Ripple, the Black Peter is wonderful, the Dew is powerful, and who doesn’t love an Alligator? And I sure do savor the CR&S coming out of GDTRFB, and the three song encore was the only time that happened all year.

All that being said, almost without fail, this show was rated the best show of 1971 in Deadbase polls, which I never understood. Solid show—absolutely. Great last Fillmore East show by the Dead---you bet. Even so, maybe a teeny tiny microscopic step down from the previous night……………

Seems like the overwhelming majority of the Drums segment from 4/18/78 has been cut, but I cant' say I'm complaining. On another note, it's interesting to note that Dave specifically points out in the Seaside Chat that partial releases, such as 4/18/78, will most likely never see the light of day as full releases. For example, while only parts of the second set from 4/19/84 were included in DaP 35, we will most certainly never see the show in its entirety. Just something to mull over. It only makes me disappointed because parts of 9/18/90 were released as a bonus disc during Road Trips, so there may never be a full release of one of *arguably* the most beautiful and excellent shows of the 90s'. Anyways, my DaP 37 is in San Leandro so hoping it crosses the Bay any day now :))))

this is the absolute truth:

last night I dreamed there was one of these community Rhythm Devils sessions. Jerry was participating, and I was too. What was really weird was that Jerry was wearing a Jamaican tam on his noggin.

it was pretty cacophonic. but i got to play.

20 minutes of those RDs...stay on target Proudfoot...stay on target...

I kvetched about the nearly 20 minute Space from 6/19/94 recently...

THANK YOU DAVE!!!

My shipping notice came a couple days ago. I have subscribed every year since they first started them and am glad that Dave and company have been mixing it up (except nothing from 90s yet).

I actually just started listening to Dave's Picks 36 having waited since getting it months ago and the crowd energy and virtually perfectly crafted performances with Jerry's recovery and return are perfect for that release. My first post-coma shows were Alpine later that year in summer and they were epic. My timing of coming into the Dead and age demographic are pretty much the same as Dave's. My first show was in 84, then send one and third in 86. Alpine 87 was my third outing. By 89 I was finally hitting multiple tours and venue stops. It was a pretty exviting time to be a fan and witness their growth in real time from Jerry's recovery to the MIDI experiments of 89 and beyond.

A short few years later it was gone in a flash, but I sure enjoyed the ride while it was still cruising.....and still am.

I think I finally get where Dave's choices help to bring a rounded out experience to any ears that want to hear history.

LOL, I can’t believe how much I’ve become attached to the seaside chats! Almost as much as some of the releases lol.
I could totally see just sitting around a bar with Dave and a couple other Dead nutz, hockey game on in the background, arguing about the Dead....maybe I’ve just been cooped up too long lol.
The man sure can sell that’s for sure! He takes some of these shows that I’m sorta nonplussed about and gets me psyched. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled for each and every release, but we all have hopes for “those” shows (thinking of you HF lol), so some releases provide different levels of let’s say, individual enthusiasm. Dave makes em all special!
Good job eh! PLEASE, keep em coming!
And yes, thanks to all the Dead/rhino crew for all ya do, especially Marye.
Now if only we could choose our shipping method, ahem...

Interesting about clarifying that partially released stuff is from shows that won’t get full treatment/release. Makes sense to me, and it’s good to know what’s what etc. Wonder about “there’s no master list”...I think they they might not have a “set list” made up, but there’s probably a master “song list” that their choosing from of what he said; good shows that we have good tapes of”
You’d think there’d be some discussion or ruff drafts of certain things I.e., June 76, or Fillmore 69, or E72...
Let’s face it though, unfortunately there will be limits as to what/when shows will come out.

SHIPPING NOTICES; many of you have inquired about lack of notices etc. personally I’ve had releases where I didn’t get one at all, or got one about the time it arrived, or even after. Received one this time and if there’s no snafus with the PO/shipping labels etc mine should be here early next week. 🤞
But hey, As long as they show up.....mayor Jim and some others still haven’t received 36, and unfortunately i think there’s some folks still trying to hunt down others...
I guess every silver linings got a touch of gray...

FUTURE: was a little bummed he didn’t at least tease us with “future” info. Like will we get an WOTF anniversary release as HF thinks, and of course the million dollar question; what’s in the box? I think it’s fun for all of us to have some tid bit of information to speculate about, (GIVE IT UP DAVE), like the recent 80s rumors...Unfortunately I don’t think we’re getting a WOTF 50th this year. My interpretation of the accelerated release schedule is more about the last few since if they went the full 50 years half of us could be dead. But I hope I’m wrong! ; )

Okay, please Mr postman!

EDIT: Crow, you are one funny mofo, thanks!

Say you that it's no WOTF 50th till 2023?? I'm so old my CD player remote finger is getting creaky...

I think they want to keep the 50th thing rolling and we'll have it by mid-year. And because Dave wants a two-disc companion show, it'll be ... oh well, I have ranted for too long and y'all know my rap.

I'm less enamored than some on Dave's sea side, squishy-toed schpiels... I fast forward to the last couple minutes to see if he drops a box-related tidbit. He's keeping his powder dry (as I tried to at many rainy shows) as this is only the end of January. By the next DP, he'll say something. Then Bolo will jack us around! All in good fun.

After reading show reviews of 4-15-78 on the Setlist Program, I'm pretty psyched for this release. And when 2 1/2 hours of music is considered a "short" show, it reminds me of the good old daze, when that meant a four-hour excursion, not to mention the adventure of getting safety to and from the shows, which in my case is a relative concept. (Englishtown, lost my ride, found some cardboard and rolled up into it for the night, caught a ride straight to my door the next day...)

Oro -- at one time I beseeched everyone to live in the moment and stop speculating. And here I am, the very worst cannonball-into-the-pool nutcase. So it goes................

No message, tracking number...no clue...& there it was on my porch. What a nice weekend surprise for a cold and wet Friday...hope all are safe and well.....

I have just snuck through the door and ordered a copy of this one, seemingly without any problems. First time I have not subscribed. Weirdly, it feels more satisfying buying it this way, although I may end up paying more if I get them all, and I will of course miss out on the bonus disc. But it feels as if I have chosen to buy this show myself. Increasingly, with the subscriptions, I was starting to feel as though someone else was deciding what I bought, and was picking shows I wouldn't myself have chosen. This way, I feel I am getting back to getting what I decide to get.
Of course, if you want everything, its not a problem, and you are probably better off subscribing.

Based on the Listening Party, this is a fantastic sounding recording! Great job by Betty. Just based on that little bit sounds like she got a better mix than DaP 7 and 15 from the following week. Could be my ears fooling me, just sounds like one of her better tapes. Love the filler, especially cutting the 18 min Drums down to what I assume is the lead into Samson. Really interested to hear Scarlet> Dancing, will wait til it arrives and not listen to one on the Archive. Also digging that 4/12/78 is still a possibility for future release.

Picked up one of the glasses and a tshirt (burnt orange is one of my favorite colors, especially for a shirt, so they had my money right there), as well. Wonder if all this year's Picks will have a glass, or if they just really liked that cover, which, it is one of the best covers in the

PS if you do listen to the Listening Party, listen out for Jack a Roe teases in Let It Grow. Heard it while typing and was pretty cool.

Hi All, I hope everyone is doing well. I have haven't commented in a while as I have been navigating through some work and other events. So we knew what this show was going to be and I am quite excited for it. It looks like it will be high energy. Of course with it being a Betty Board, that just adds to it.

I am equally excited for the generous portion of the Pittsburgh show we are getting as well. First, any time we get this much filler its always welcome. Second, I had made a comment many months ago when this was revealed to be the 1st show in the 2021 subscription run, that we should take guesses at what show the extra material would be pulled from. Dave L described that it would come from a good but under the radar show. I am fairly knowledgeable on 1978 GD, but I have gaps when comes to listening to specific tours. I did not know much about the spring tour. When I was consulting the Deadbase as to which show it could be, I hoped for the Pittsburgh show. This is not because of my hometown bias, but the 2nd set looked intriguing. The Scarlet > Dancing segue seems unique especially for the time period. I don't think of Scarlet not being paired with Fire back then. I know eventually it would occasionally be on its own or paired with other songs. Still I always I think of it paired with Fire from 77-79, so this looks cool. Regardless, I am looking forward to getting Vol. 37. I got my shipping notice a few days ago but it hasn't arrived yet.

Stay safe and well everyone and hopefully soon we'll all be spinning this fine music.

Some funny stuff in these threads.. pretty positive so far..

I'm with Oroborous, the seaside chats amuse me and do get my blood pumping in anticipation. I am stoked to hear the cleaned up, pristine sounding NFA>Jam>Morning Dew.. I still can't get over how good the Dew they snuck into #29 at the end of the Swing was. These incredible sounding Betty Board Morning Dews are phenomenal, I will gladly take any I can get my grubby little paws on.. but there are so few to be had.

I do have a piece of troubling news, however. It appears while breaking down his camera equipment and tripod, Dave was attacked by an angry mob of sea otters. You would not think this to look at them because they are so playful and cute, but sea otters are short tempered marine mammals with strong teeth and a powerful bite.. and apparently have been clamoring for 1969 for some time with no success.

Join me in wishing Dave a complete and speedy recovery.

Ignore sea mammals at your own peril people..

There's a 1. A 69. And a 78 in my number. I don't know what that means, but sounds neat.

As a freshman in college, my good friend Phil Epstein and I hitchhiked from New Paltz, NY 4/14/78 to Williamsburg. We had seen Garcia Band, but this was to be our first GD show. The next day was parents day on campus at William and Mary, and the khakis and blue blazers were roaming and staring at the tie-dyed invasion. The show was high energy. The band was on it. The crowd excited. A thoroughly satisfying show! Last week my friend Phil and I were excited about the release of DP37, as this was our first show, and it was epic. As the universe would have it, Phil passed away suddenly last Sunday. This is dedicated to his memory. RIP.

Not only would you have loved Phil, a truly beautiful person, but he would have loved you back. Would have given you his shirt if you were cold, his water if you were thirsty. We had seen hundreds of shows since W&M, and he was the guy you never met, but smiled and high-fived you after Jerry just blew our minds...huge smile on his face...the epitamy of what a Deadhead and generous soul should be. My profile pic is my $6 stub from 4/15/78...

I purchased a Dap 37 glass for my beer. I'll feel more sophisticated drinking beer from this glass. Mmmmm, beer.

....you know? I probably did. I do that a lot.
I do that at hockey games too.
Fuck covid.
On the bright side, this release sounds incredible. And the band is on.
Could always be worse.
You guys got an awesome first show.

Hi, You must have placed your order so quickly that you didn’t read the blurb about the beverage glass.

“To honor this year's Dave's Picks releases we will be dropping 4 collective beverage glasses, 1 for each release. Collect all 4! Limited edition run of 1000 units.”

That looks like there will be one for each DaP.

Good luck getting them all.
